Phulchoki

Nepal /Kathmandu /Kathmandu

Phulchoki is located 20km south-east of Kathmandu. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Phulchowki is the major hill station in the Kathmandu valley. The hill is very popular for both bird watching and acclimatization. This site is rich in bird watching and till date approximately 300 species of birds (of 400 species in Kathmandu valley) have been spotted in the area. This area is best visited during the month of October and March and April when the migrating birds are arriving or departing . The trip also provides sweeping panorama of the valley. There are also temples such as Phulchoki Mai on top of the hill and Phulchoki shrine at the bottom of the hill. If you like walking we would recommend you a walk of approx. 4-5 hours to the top from the bottom of the hill as that will provide more time to look around (which most of the people do). If you do not like to walk all the way to the top of the hill there is also a road that winds to the top of the hill. At the foot of the hill beautiful garden, The Royal Botanical garden is situated which is a popular picnic spot for locals but for foreigners there are also some interesting things to see such as the green house which houses the notable collection of the orchids and ferns.

Narayanhiti Palace Museum

Nepal /Kathmandu /Kathmandu

Narayanhiti Palace Museum is located in the north-central part of Kathmandu, at the head of Durbar marg. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The name, Narayanhiti, is made up of two words ‘Narayan’ and ‘Hiti’. Naryan is the name of an incarnation of the Hindu God Vishnu, whose temple is located opposite to the palace. ‘Hiti’ means “water spout” which is also located to the east of main entrance in the precincts of the palace, a landmark that features prominently in local legends. It is designed to be a contemporary pagoda with sprawling, park-like grounds covering an area of (30 hectares (74 acres)) all fully enclused with walls and guarded gates. The current Narayanhiti Palace was built in 1970, replacing the original 1915 building, which had been destroyed in an earthquake. It was first used on the occasion of the marriage of King Birenda Bir Bikram Shah, the then heir apparent to the throne. The southern gate of the palace is located at the intersection of Prithvi path and Durbar marg streets. The palace was also the scene of the 2001 Nepalese Royal Massacre. After the 2006 revolution toppled the monarchy, the newly elected assembly declared Nepal a republic and ordered the King to vacate the palace. It has since been turned into a museum.

Sankhu

Nepal /Kathmandu /Sankhu

Sankhu Village, situated between Kathmandu and Lhasa, Kathmandu, Nepal. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Sankhu place is also known as the Eighty Siddhas as there are four of five caves where the siddhas of India are said to have stayed. One of the caves is also said to have been the practice cave of Nagarjuna, and an image of the great master which was originally in the cave has been taken outside and placed some distance away. Sankhu, one of the oldest Newar village of the Kathmandu valley holds pristine natural surroundings and offers a galore of culture and heritage of the Goddess Vajrayogini and Newar people. Sankhu, derived from the original Newar language Sakwo: means the settlement next to the Tibet. As the name suggests, it was once a small but vibrant Newar city before it lost its prominence as the trade route to Tibet following construction of the Aarniko Highway connecting Kathmandu to the Chinese border in 1960s. On the hill behind there is a courtyard in the centre of which is a basin containing the “Water of the Kalpa” which never dries up. In the building immediately to the left of the stairs, there is also an eternal fire or “Fire of the Kalpa”. Further up, on top of the hill, is the Mani-linga.

Pranamaya Yoga Boudha

Nepal /Kathmandu /Boudha

Pranamaya Yoga Boudha, it is 4 minutes walk distance from the main Boudha Stupa Gate, Kathmandu, Nepal. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Pranamaya Yoga is a breath of fresh air in the pollution, traffic and general chaos that is found in Kathmandu. There are two studios located at opposite ends of the city. One in Patan, the world heritage-listed old quarter dotted with historic temples, and the other in Thamel, the tourist hotspot. Pranamaya Yoga hosts two to three yoga classes daily in each location with all classes suitable for beginners. The variety of classes on offer range from Power Yoga to Hatha to Iyengar. The philosophy is that all styles are useful so long as they allow newcomers to feel at home. It is a welcome sight to see not only expatriates teaching at the studio but also local Nepalese, an unusual situation in a foreign-run studio in Nepal. Equally amazing is that the classes draw in a large local community, a departure from the Nepalese attitude to yoga. One of the main goals of Pranamaya Yoga is to offer a beautiful space with consistent classes, enabling you to integrate yoga into your lifestyle with ease. Sam Voolstra, the founder of Pranamaya, found that the Kathmandu community lacked that single most important aspect of yoga; the space to be able to practice and grow in a supportive environment. Pranamaya Yoga was born.
