Nagi Gompa is situated on the north side of Shivpuri. The river Bagmati flows east breaking through a ridge that surrounds the valley on the north side at Sundarijal. Water flows out through a gargoyle which is shaped like the mouth of a tiger. According to Buddhism, Buddha brought forth water from a rock with his index finger. According to a version from the Swayambhu Purana, in the Tretayuga, the fourth Buddha Krakuchchhanda appeared on the earth and came to Nepal to pay homage to Swayambhu Dharmadhatu, Guheshwari and Manjushri’s throne.He went to the Sankhya Parvat or Shivpuri to preach ‘Aryasatya’ (Sublime truth). Several people came to hear him and all of them requested to be ordained and initiated. There was no water on Shivpuri and Krakuchchhanda, by reciting several mantras, caused a stream to originate.

Akash Bhairav is a Hindu deity. Considered the “God of the sky”, several large temples in Kathmandu are dedicated to him. The head of the Aakash Bhairav was dug up several hundred years ago in Kathmandu. The head sits in a Hindu temple in Indra Chock Kathmandu not far from Durbar Square. It is taken out once a year and is blessed by the Kumari ; the living Goddess who lives in the nearby Kumari Chowk. This ceremony is held in the month of August/September. In September 2007 Nepal’s state-run airline confirmed that it had sacrificed two goats to appease Akash Bhairab, whose symbol is seen on the company’s planes, following technical problems with one of its aircraft. Nepal Airlines said the animals were slaughtered in front of the plane at Kathmandu airport. The airline said that after the ceremony the plane successfully completed a flight to Hong Kong. “The snag in the plane has now been fixed and the aircraft has resumed its flights,” senior airline official Raju KC was quoted as saying. The company did not say what the problem was, but reports in local media had blamed an electrical fault.

Natural history museum of Nepal is situated on the lap of Swayambhu stupa, a world heritage site in the west hillock of Kathmandu valley. Swayambhu hillock is itself a famous place not only in the context of the culture, religion and history of Kathmandu valley, but also equally famous place for the early plant hunters in Nepal. This museum has a unique collection of butterflies, fish, reptiles, birds, mammals, plants and a variety of fossils collected within the country. Photography inside the museum is prohibited.

HistoryEdit

Before the establishment of the Natural History Museum (NHM), specimens collected by foreign scientific expeditions were allowed to be taken out of the country for lack of a proper repository facility in Nepal. As a consequence, much of the scientific research in the natural history of Nepal was done in other countries. Nepali scientists, students, and teachers had limited access to the information on their own country’s natural inheritance. The museum was established in 1975 with the objective of serving as a research and education facility in Nepal for foreign and Nepali scientists, students and teachers. The museum was built on the premises of the former Ananda Kuti Campus. Today, it houses about 40,000 zoological specimens, 7,000 botanical specimens, 400 fossils and 100 skeletons.

Jaganath (Krishna) Temple inside there are images of Krishna and two Goddesses, which, according to a Sanskrit inscription, are modelled on the king and his two wives. The temple’s Newari inscription neglects to mention the king’s little act of vanity. The temple is a favourite of sadhus who pose (and expect to be paid) for photos here.
