Swayambhunath Temple

Swayambhunath Temple, situated at 7.7 km away from Kathmandu. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Swayambhunath Temple or The Monkey Temple as its famously referred to is one of the oldest religious sites in Nepal. Typically considered Buddhist, the temple is revered by people of all faiths. A golden spire crowning a conical wooded hill, Swayambhunath Stupa is the most ancient and enigmatic of all the holy shrines in Kathmandu valley. Its lofty white dome and glittering golden spire are visible for many miles and from all sides of the valley. The cubical structure supports the eyes of Buddha, looking in four directions with the word ‚ ÄòUnity’ carved in between. The temple depicts skilled structural expertise and artistic proficiency. One of the most visited tourist spots in Kathmandu, the temple is responsible for bringing together people of different beliefs under a common roof.

Swayambhunath Temple, Kathmandu

Swayambhunath Temple, Kathmandu

HistoryEdit

Swayambhunath Temple was founded about 2,000 years ago, Kathmandu Valley was filled with a great lake. According to Buddhist legend, a single perfect lotus grew in the center of the lake. When the bodhisattva Manjusri drained the lake with a slash of his sword, the lotus flower settled on top of the hill and magically transformed into the stupa. Thus it is known as the Self-Created (swayambhu) Stupa. The earliest written record of the Swayambunath Stupa’s existence is a 5th-century stone inscription, but scholars believe there was probably a shrine here as early as the 1st century. Even before that, it is likely that animist rites took place on this hill.

Welcome To My Yard

Nepal /Kathmandu /Kathmandu

Welcome To My Yard, Milan Galli, Ward 7, Gaurighat, Kathmandu 1111, Nepal. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

My Yard began in 2005 in Nepal after a photography project with a group of ex-child labour children and a group of Kathmandu’s street children who took incredible photos of their lives using just disposable cameras. We all had a passion to continue supporting the young people we had met, the photos are so personal, strong and creative and screamed anything but pity me at the viewer. We published the childrens work in a photography book and held an art-photography exhibition In London.

Bodnath Stupa

Nepal /Kathmandu /Boudha

Bodnath Stupa, is located 11 km (6.8 mi) from the center and northeastern outskirts of Kathmandu. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Boudhanath Stupa (or Bodnath Stupa) is the largest stupa in Nepal and the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet. It is the center of Tibetan culture in Kathmandu and rich in Buddhist symbolism. This very imposing stupa is believed to house some of the remains of previous great sages and the bones of Buddha. Believers walk in a clockwise direction around the stupa to pay their respects and have their wishes granted. It is also believed that walking around in an anti-clockwise direction is disrepectful although you can see foreigners doing just that maybe due to the fact that they do not know better or are just plain ignorant, so they are not guilty… Gurus (Buddhist teachers) will tell you to walk around the stupa 7 times if you wish to have your desires granted. Each round will take about 5 to 10 mintues depending on your speed or the crowd that are always present at any time of the day especially during the Buddhist festive season such as Buddha’s birthday etc. There is a wall surrounding the stupa with prayer wheels inplanted in the wall for devotees to manipulate so that their prayers will be heard. Each turn of the wheel represent one prayer and there are dozens of wheels to turn so may it take a while. Just follow the person in front so that you will not miss any wheel.

HistoryEdit

Bodnath was probably built in the 14th century after the Mughal invasions; various interesting legends are told regarding the reasons for its construction. After the arrival of thousands of Tibetans following the 1959 Chinese invasion, the temple has become one of the most important centers of Tibetan Buddhism. Today it remains an important place of pilgrimage and meditation for Tibetan Buddhists and local Nepalis, as well as a popular tourist site.

Detail InformationEdit

Sanwariaji Temples are counted among the prominent religious centres of Chittorgarh. These are dedicated to Sanwariaji, an incarnation of Lord Krishna. These shrines are highly revered by Hindu devotees, especially in North India. It is believed that 250 years ago, a cowherd boy called Bholaram Gurjar dreamt of 4 statues of the deity buried at Bhadsoda. The place was dug, and the statues were recovered, but one of them got destroyed in the process and was reburied. The three remaining statues were installed at three temples and worshipped as Sanwariaji. The statues are beautiful and depict Lord Krishna playing the flute. Devotees throng the shrines, which are renowned for the magical blessings of the deity.
