Besides temples, there are several ‘mathas’ (monasteries) in the region on Chandragiri hill. Among the prominent monasteries are Bhandari Basti, Akkara Basti and Chandragupta Basti, which are believed to have been built during the reign of Emperor Ashoka. To the north-east of the Shiva temple, there is a wide stretch of sand covered debris that has been excavated recently. To the south-west corner of the stretch, there are remains of the Huccheshvara Temple.

Bhimsen Temple is situated Durbar Marg, Patan, Lalitpur, Nepal. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Bhimsen, the Newari deity, is said to watch over traders and artisans, so it’s quite appropriate that the ground floor of this well-kept temple should be devoted to shop stalls. An image of Bhimsen used to be carried to Lhasa in Tibet every 12 years to protect those vital trade routes, until the route was closed by the flight of the Dalai Lama in 1959. Tourists are not allowed inside the temple, which is fronted by a brass lion on a pedestal, ducking under the electric wires.

The four thurs or mounds located on the perimeter of Patan are ascribed around, one at each corner of its cardinal points, which are popularly known as Ashoka Stupas. Legend has it that Emperor Ashoka (Legendary King of India) visited with his daughter Charumati to Kathmandu in 250 B.C. and erected five Ashoka Stupas, four in the surrounding and one at the middle of the Patan. The size and shape of these stupas seem to breathe their antiquity in a real sense. There are more than 1,200 Buddhist monuments of various shapes and sizes scattered in and around the city.
