Kumbeshwar Temple is noted for its fantastic display of wood carvings and graceful construction. The temple is dedicated to Shiva, as indicated by the bull, facing the temple. The temple platform has two ponds whose water is said to come straight from the holy lake at Gosainkunda, a long trek north of the valley. An annual ritual bath in the Kumbeshwar Temple’s tank is claimed to be as commendable as making the grueling trip to Gosainkunda. Thousands of pilgrims flock to Kumbeshwar temple during the festival of Janai Purnima in the month of July or August to pay homage to the deity that is represented by silver and gold lingam.

Mahaboudha Temple Located in south Patan the Mahaboudha temple is one of several popular attractions of culture worth stopping by to see. The nickname “temple of a thousand and eight Buddhas” comes from the engraved terracotta tiles that cover the stone structiure. The temple is sometimes called the “the temple of 9000” buddhas too. However this is somewhat misleadings as the 9000 referers to the stones used to build the temple under the tiles.

Mahaboudha Temple was built In the 1500s a devotee from Patan named Abhaya Raj Shakya visited the famous Mahabodhi temple in Bodhgaya temple in India. Whist in Bodgaya he studied coin making. Back in Kathmandu he obtained permssion to begin a royal mint in his courtyad. In 1564 he began constuction of this Mahaboudha temple however he died when only foundation were constructed. Each of five Abhaya’s sons worked on finishing temple. All but the fifth died with the project incomplete. The fifth son was about to give up when a goddess appeared and he continued the project. The Mahaboudha temple was finished in 1610. The temple was severely damaged in the earthquake of 1933 and an extensive restoration project facilitated much of the repairs.

Kwa Bahal, also known as the Golden Temple, is a Buddhist monastery courtyard dating to the 12th century. The monastery building is embellished with exceptionally fine wood-carvings and repousse work. Artistic images are scattered around the courtyard, and devotees can be seen offering worship at the many shrines here. If tourits enter from the eastern entrance, tourits will come across the glamorous lion statues which were a signature trademark of Krishnabir, the master stonemason, who sculpted the main entrance with elaborate friezes of buddhist deities. Entering through the second door way takes you in the inner sanctum. Shoes and leather articles are not allowed inside. Photography is also not permitted.

Kwa Bahal built by King Bhaskar Verma, Kwa Bahal is locally known as the Golden Temple. Another name for this golden masterpiece is the Hiranyavarna Mahavihara. Dedicated to Lokeshwor (Lord Buddha), the pagoda exhibits excellent woodwork, repousse and chasing technique. The upper storey contains a golden idol of an eight armed Buddha along with a large prayer wheel.

Royal Bardia National Park, the largest and most undisturbed park in the lowland region of Terai, is known for abundance of wilderness. Initially a royal hunting reserve, it was later granted the status of a national park. The purpose was to preserve the ecosystem of the region including all wild species. The park encompasses approximate 300 sq km of sal forests and riverine grasslands. High elephant grass and dense forests provide home to plenty of animals. The Central Zoo, with an area of about 6 ha., provides shelter to a total of 870 individual mammal, bird, fish and reptile of 109 species. It also serves as recreational center for the visitors. Central Zoo uniquely serves as a historical cultural site for diverse groups of people. Over one million visitors come to enjoy the displays at the Central Zoo annually. The main source of income has been the revenue collected from the entry ticket sales. With an aim of generating public awareness and participation in nature and wildlife conservation, the Central Zoo has been successfully running a special membership based program called the “Friends of Zoo” (FOZ) with a network of schools in Kathmandu Valley.

The Central Zoo is the only zoo in Nepal. The Government of Nepal finally opened the zoo to the public in 1956. The Zoo remained under the management of various Departments of the Government for various years. It was only when the zoo was managed meeting the standards when it was handed over to The National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) in December 1995. The Trust has developed plans and policies to maintain the zoo and improve the living conditions of animals.

Bus : Private companies operate a number of routes connecting Patan with other places in the valley. Buses, micro-buses and electric tempos are the most common forms of public transport seen in the city. Lalitpur Yatayat buses connects the touristic Thamel area of Kathmandu with buses stopping at Patan Dhoka, a five-minute walk to Patan Durbar Square. Lagankhel Bus Park is the central transport hub.
