Bhadreshwar Temple

India /Gujrat /Kutch /Bhadreshwar

Bhadreshwar is just a kilometer from the coast, 69 km east of Mandvi, past Mundra, and 75 km south of Bhuj. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Bhadreshwar Temple is an ancient temple is placed west of the village of Bhadreshwar, just a few miles far from the seashore. The old name of the Bhadreshwar was Bhadravati, which was a flourishing city and one of the most important places of Jain pilgrimage of ancient Kutch. The temple was extensively described by Harihar Singh in his book Jaina Temples of Western India. Bhadreshwar Temple stands in an oblong courtyard about 48 ft. by 85 ft. inside, around which runs a row of about 44 (originally 48) devakulikāswith a colonnaded corridor in front. The temple complex is reared upon a jagatī which is reached only from the north to which direction the temple also faces.
The temple has been restored and altered so often that all its original character has vanished. During recent years the entire temple has been coated with white pigment, so that it is very hard to decide which part of the temple is old and which one is new. The pillars, architecture and ceilings having been coated with white lime and painted with variegated colours, the interior looks very odd. Besides, the rear half of the court is covered with iron grilles. Four of the devakulikāsin the front row are quite recent.

Bhadreshwar Temple

Bhadreshwar Temple

HistoryEdit

Bhadreshwar is one of the major temple of Jain pilgrimage in Gujarat. Unreliable reports claim the city was founded in 516 BC, and oral accounts state that the first temple was built 2500 years ago, about 45 years after the death of Lord Mahavir, but there is no evidence to either support or debunk that claim. The main temple is strikingly beautiful, in all white marble with majestic pillars. Around the central one are 52 smaller shrines, one of which reputedly holds the original Parshavanath idol from 500 BC .

Kalo Dungar Kutch or The Black Hills of Kutch is the highest point in Kutch, Gujarat, India, at 462 meter. Kalo Dungar Kutch is probably the only place in Kutch from where a panoramic view of the Great Rann of Kutch is possible. Since Kalo Dungar Bhuj is located very near to the Pakistan border, there is an Army post at the top; beyond here, only military staffs are allowed. The Black Hills Bhuj is one of the few non-coastal locations where you feel like you are at the edge of the earth, on the brink of inconceivable vastness that fades off towards infinity. Looking out from the Kutch Black Hills, you can understand the fantastic effort that those who undertake the crossing of the Great Rann have to make. The Black Hill of Kutch is a very holy site, very nice place for the Hindus because there are temples of Lord Shiva and the community God Pachchhampir also.
