The golf course was built under the supervision of Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India in the early 1900s. Captivated by the beauty of the place, surrounded by a thick mane of Himalayan cedar, which was also his favourite camping site just outside the British summer capital of Shimla, he established what today is one of the oldest and most scenic golf courses in the country. It is also to be noted that in memory of his stay there he named his third daughter Alexandra Naldehra.Initially a 9 Hole Course, the Naldehra golf course was expanded to 18 holes, and further expansion has been planned to make the course at par with the best in the country.

Tara Devi temple is situated on the Tara Devi Mountain between Shoghi and Shimla. The location of the temple on the Hill top makes it appear that the goddess seems to keep everyone under the protective gaze ,showering innumerable blessings on her worshippers From here one can get a panoramic view of Shimla and snow-clad Himalayan range on one side, with the other side revealing the plains at a far distance. With the majestic forested mountains around, this place has high spiritual value that has a soothing and rejuvenating effect, being away from the din, noise, pollution, crowd and urban infrastructure.

Tara Devi Temple, Shimla

HistoryEdit

The origin of this temple can be traced back to around 250 years. It is said Goddess Tara was brought all the way from West Bengal to Himachal Pradesh. A King from the Sen dynasty visited this place after some years. He had brought along a small gold locket in which his an idol of his deity was encased in gold. He always wore this locket in his upper arm. The idol remained encased in that locket for many generations to come. One fine day, Raja Bhupendra Sen (of the 96th generation) had an unusual incident. While hunting in a dense forest, he had a vision of Goddess Tara along with Hanuman, who desired that she should be available for the public to pray and seek blessings.Immediately, the Maharaja donated a big piece of land to build a temple dedicated to Goddess Tara. Thus, a temple was built and a wooden idol of the Goddess was installed for people to worship. After some more generations, Raja Balbir Sen had a vision in which the Goddess had wished that she be installed at the top of a hill known as Tarav Parvat. The Maharaja got a temple built at the top of the hill and got a beautiful idol made out of “Ashtadhatu”, a rare combination of eight elements. He got it installed in a grand fashion by taking out a huge procession and carrying the idol on the top of an elephant named Shankar. The temple stands in its entire splendour even today on this hilltop.

You can easily get State Transport as well as private buses for reaching Shimla from New Delhi. Infact, the high-end Volvo buses also cater to tourists going to Shimla. HPRTC buses offer bus connectivity from all cities in Himachal Pradesh to Shimla. Frequent ordinary and deluxe bus services are available from Delhi to Shimla. Overnight buses are available from Delhi (360 km, 9 hours, Rs 900 for AC Volvo bus) and Chandigarh (120 km, 4 hours and Rs 500 for AC Volvo bus).
The local transport system consists of buses. The local buses ply along the circular road which creates a ring around the city. The buses are a good way to get around the city and they are inexpensive.

Train : Shimla has a meter gauge railway station. It connects to the nearest broad gauge station at Kalka, which is at a distance of 89 km from Shilmla. Kalka has good connectivity from Chandigarh (Kalka Shatabdi), Ambala (Barmer Klk Exp), Delhi (Himalayan Queen), Mumbai (Paschim Express) and Kolkata (Howrah-Kalka). There are no direct trains from Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore. Taxi services are available from Kalka to Shimla and charge is about Rs 1,750. Kalka is well connected to all major cities in India by rail. After getting down at Airport take an auto-rickshaw, bus or hire a taxi to reach this site.
