Greater Kailash 1 was developed in the 1960s by DLF Limited when Delhi Government allowed private developers to build colonies , and is today one of the more affluent neighborhoods in the city. The markets in M and N Block are some of the most popular markets in Delhi, home to a wide range of retail stores, such as Giovanni, Next, Puma, Nike, Adidas and Lacoste, and several restaurants and coffee houses. The N-Block market is the location of Fabindia’s first retail store,and many eating houses.Durgabari, the home of Maa Durga, as it is commonly known is an important landmark in Greater Kailash-I. It all started in 1961 when a handful of residents of Kailash Colony started the Durga Puja in the central park of Kailash colony. At that time only Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja used to be celebrated annually. In the year 1966, the site of the puja was shifted from the central park to the present location. People then started thinking that only Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja were not enough and so started the Kali Puja. A society was then formed in 1974 in the name of Durgabari Society and registered in 1975.

The lower parts of the piers are inlaid with floral designs, while the upper portions are gilded and painted. The present wooden ceiling of the hall was painted in 1911. The four corners of its roof are surrounded by pillared chhatris.

The four corners of its roof are surrounded by pillared chhatris.Over the marble pedestal in its centre stood the famous Peacock Throne which was removed in 1739 by Nadir Shah. Through the centre of the hall flowed the Nahr-i-Bihisht. Over the corner arches of the northern and southern walls below the cornice is inscribed the famous verse of Amir Khusraw exclaiming ‘if there be a paradise on the earth, it is this, it is this, it is this’.The hall was used by the emperor for giving private audience to the selected courtiers and visitors. Originally there existed on the west of the Diwan-i-Khas two enclosures, one for the nobles and the other for those who were not of a very high rank. These enclosures were removed after the Mutiny. During the Mutiny, Bahadur Shah II held court in the Diwan-i-Khas.The Diwan-i-Khas is located in the Red Fort in Delhi. The splendid Red Fort is constructed out of red sand stone and is reminiscent of the ancient Mughal culture. The Diwan-i-Khas was a hall for special members of the Mughal kingdom and the commoners were not allowed entry here.

The hall proper, three bays in depth, originally ornamented with gilded stucco work and hung with heavy curtains, is raised on arches springing from pillars and has an impressive façade of nine openings of engrained arches. At its back stands a marble canopy or baldachin, covered by its ‘Bengal’ roof, under which stood the emperor’s throne. The emperor received the general public here and heard their complaints. A marble dais, inlaid with precious stones, stands below the throne and was used by the prime minister for receiving the complaints and petitions.

A marble dais, inlaid with precious stones, stands below the throne and was used by the prime minister for receiving the complaints and petitions. At the back of the canopy the wall is faced with beautiful panels inlaid with multicoloured stones, representing flowers and birds. These panels are said to have been executed by Austin de Bordeaux, Florentine jeweller. In the central panel on the top is shown the Greek God Orpheus with his lute. The panels were much damaged and at one time removed to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, but were restored in 1903 at the instance of Lord Curzon.Diwan-i-Am is located in the premises of the Red Fort. Its purpose was to serve as a congregation area for the general public. The Diwan-i-Am or the Hall of Public Audience is a place that attracts number of visitors annually. It initially had a courtyard at its front and was exquisitely and richly decorated with gild styled stuccowork. The Diwan-i-Am had heavy curtains that were three bays in depth.

Dilli haat tells us that it was established and opened in 1994 with the joint venture of Delhi Tourism (DTDC), D.C (Handicrafts), NMDC, D.C. (Handlooms) and Ministry of Tourism and Textile, Government of India.In 2003 this market became accessible to all the tourists and it also had bathroom that was made accessible at the same time.Delhi has two such markets one is Dilli Haat and another one is Pitampura. Both the markets are developed by DTTDC. The Pitampur Dilli Haat spread across 7.2 hectare of area and it is close to Pitampura T.V Tower and it was opened in April 2008. The government is planning to open more similar Dilli Haat all over Delhi. This is a single venue that provides all kind of product and services like crafts, music, cultural festival and dance etc. Dilli Haat was venue for India’s first Comic Convention, Comic Con India organized in Feb 2011. Dilli Haat situated in south Delhi acts as a weekly bazaar on broader perspective. It is a permanent location for handicrafts, cultural activities and food.Dilli Haat located in Delhi is spread across approximately6 acres area and it boosts village culture and encourages the rural part of India to showcase their talent, product and culture. The look of the bazaar consists of plaza that is paved with stone, sprinkled grass, brickwork, eucalyptus trees, flowering shrubs etc. This market is spread over a six acre spread with imaginative traditional rural architecture and provides an ambience for the market. The stone and brickwork paved paths interspersed with grass patches make browsing and ambling fun. The not too large but diverse food court bring the cuisines of different states together.

Chatta Chowk (Covered Bazaar) was known as Bazaar-i-Musaqqaf during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan.  It is a covered market that was built by Mukarmat Khan around 300 years ago. The site was the place of luxury trade of the royals for products like carpets, quilts, shahtus, pashmina shawls, takia-namads, brocaded costumes and velvet pardahs. At present, the place is known as Meena Bazaar and has around 40 shops, which sell artificial jewellery and antiques, bags, hand painted wall hangings and many more.

Chatta Chowk (Covered Bazaar) was conceived by Emperor Shah Jahan who thought the covered marketplace would suit the hot temperatures of Delhi. Getting a notion from the covered Bazaars of Persian forts like Isfahan & the one he had seen in Peshawar, he had instructed Mukarmat Khan (supervisor for construction of Red Fort) to build a roofed (“Chatta”) Bazaar which was originally called Bazaar-i-Musaqqaf (which meant a Bazaar with a roof). Is a unique and rare market, as it is fully covered. Build by Mukarmat Khan under Shah Jahan dynasty this place has around 40 shops selling all possible ladies items. It has been popular through many names such as ‘Chhatta Chowk Bazaar’, ‘Meena Bazaar’ and ‘Bazaar-i-Musaqqaf’. The specialty of place was rugs, carpets, quilts, shawls, costumes and shatranjis were, tourists used to come from far off places to buy these items. Tourists can visit this place during Summer season, as the roof cover will protect them from Sun.It is believed that some 300 years ago, this bazaar accommodated the luxury trade of the royally household, and traded rugs, exquisite carpets, jajams and shatranjis, quilts, takia-namads, shahtus, pashmina shawls, brocaded costumes, velvet pardahs etc.

Alai Darwaza was constructed by Ala-ud-Din Khilji, which portrays a perfect craftsmanship of the Turkish artisans. This giant gateway was built after ruining around 27 Hindu and Jain Temples already present at this site. Alai Darwaza of Delhi,is one of the oldest gates in Delhi is the Alai Darwaza. The Alai Darwaza is located in the Qutub Complex of Delhi. There are many architecture carvings found around the white marble inlay for the Alai Darwaza of Mehrauli Delhi.The Alai Darwaza of Delhi :-A number of gates were built around Delhi over the centuries. Some of the earliest gates in Delhi date back to the first half of the second millennium. One of the oldest gates in Delhi is the Alai Darwaza. This is a gate in the Qutub Complex that is very historic and features a number of interesting carvings on it. It is also very large in size and has an amazing build that is incredibly symmetrical.The Alai Darwaza is located in the Qutub Complex of Delhi. It is on the southern part of the complex near its entrance. It was constructed in 1311. Alla-Ud-Din Khilji made this large gate as the first of four gates that he wanted to build. However, this ended up being the only gate that he did make. He died five years after this gate was constructed and never got around to the other three gates.
The construction of the Alai Darwaza features mostly red sandstone, thus making it similar in its construction to other buildings around the area from that time. This is not the only material used in the construction of the gate. There is also a great amount of white marble found around the gate. This white marble is used as the inlay to the gate.
There are many architecture carvings found around the white marble inlay for the Alai Darwaza of Mehrauli Delhi.Ala-ud-din Khiliji ruled Delhi during ending of 12th century. He was also the head of construction of the Alai Darwaza and the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. About Alai Darwaza, it is the symbol of the rising of sultanate dynasty during the time period of AD1290 to AD1316. The other three gateways of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque were left under constructed after the death of Ala-ud-din Khiliji in AD1316.

Swaminarayan Akshardham, ornate temple architecture on sandstone is intricate and reflects the essence of India’s ancient traditions and timeless spirituality. The magnanimity of the complex is the first thing that strikes you about Swaminarayan Akshardham.The sprawling complex is spread across 30 acres on the banks of Yamuna near Noida Mor in East Delhi. The main monument is an architectural marvel in pink sandstone and white marble, covered with 20,000 sculptures and statues of deities and 234 ornate pillars. The temple is 42-meter-high (141 feet), 95-meter-wide (316 feet) and has eleven 22-meter-high (72 feet) domes and decorative arches. You will notice that the whole monument rises on the backs of 148 elephant sculptures, each sporting a unique posture, and a 3 meter (11 feet) panchdhatu statue surmounting the structure.There are three exhibition halls for which you need to buy entrance tickets, namely ‘Sahajanand Darshan’, ‘Neelkanth Darshan’, and ‘Sanskriti Vihar’. The first is an insight into the life of Swaminarayan by depicting important events that were a turning point in his life through life-size dolls in a recreated village setting. The second, Neelkanth Darshan is a documentary on the life of Swaminarayan, the hardships he faced and how he received enlightenment at such a tender age, in a huge I-Max theatre screen. Conclude this spiritual journey with a 12-minute boat ride through Sanskriti Vihar, down a narrow stream past robotic depictions of important events and schools of the 10,000-year-old Indian culture.If you have some more time at hand, do catch the light and sound show in an amphitheatre setting. It’s quite a spectacle. Before leaving, stop by at the souvenir shop, and maybe pick up some incense sticks, and marble artefacts adorned with colourful inlay work.

Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple.in Delhi

Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple building had been planned since 1968 as a vision of Yogiji Maharaj.Yogiji Maharaj, the spiritual head of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha at the time, expressed his desire for wanting a grand temple built on the banks of the Yamuna river to two or three devotee families of Swaminarayan that resided in New Delhi at the time.[29] Attempts were made to start the project, however little progress was made. In 1971, Yogiji Maharaj died.In 1982, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, Yogiji Maharaj’s successor as the spiritual head of BAPS, started to continue fulfilling the dream of his guru Yogiji Maharaj and prompted devotees to look into the possibility of building the temple in Delhi. A request for the plan was put forward to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and several different places were suggested, including Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, and Faridabad. Pramukh Swami Maharaj stood firm in following the wishes of Yogiji Maharaj to build a temple on the Yamuna.In April 2000, after 18 years, the Delhi Development Authority offered 60 acres (240,000 m2) of land, and the Uttar Pradesh Government offered 30 acres (120,000 m2) for the project.[30] Upon receiving the land, Pramukh Swami Maharaj performed puja on the site for success in the project. Construction on the temple began on 8 November 2000 and Akshardham was officially opened on 6 November 2005, with the building being completed in two days short of five years.This beautiful structure and masterpiece architecture was built under the support and funding of the Bochasanvasi Aksharpurushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). The temple was inaugurated on November 7, 2005 by Pramukhswami Maharaj (Leader of BAPS).It is built along the river Yamuna and lies over an area of around 100 acres with beautiful gardens, water fountains and carved pavilions. The temple took complete two years for completion and a hefty sum of rupees was invested in the construction. According to estimates, around 2 billion was spent in the construction of this masterpiece which indeed depicts the great Hindu religion.The architecture of Akshardham temple is similar to the one at Gandhinagar in Gujarat. The main monument at the temple is about 141 feet high with a beautiful statue of Lord Swaminarayan. There are various structures within the temple which depicts the history and culture of Hindu Religion.

Others : METRO The new high-speed metro line is the best way to get to/from the airport, and runs between New Delhi train station and Dwarka Sector 21, via Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan NH8 (Mahipalpur station) and Indira Gandhi International station (Terminal 3). Trains operate every 10 minutes from 5am to 1am. Cycle-rickshaws are still in use in parts of Old Delhi, though they have been banned in Chandni Chowk to reduce congestion. Let’s hope they’re not banned in other areas, as they’re the best way to get around Old Delhi – the drivers are wizards at weaving through the crowds. Tips are appreciated for this gruelling work.

Red sandstone walls of the massive Red Fort (Lal Qila) rise 33-m above the clamour of Old Delhi as a reminder of the magnificent power and pomp of the Mughal emperors. The walls, built in 1638, were designed to keep out invaders, now they mainly keep out the noise and confusion of the city.
The main gate, Lahore Gate, is one of the emotional and symbolic focal points of the modern Indian nation and attracts a major crowd on each Independence Day. The vaulted arcade of Chatta Chowk, a bazaar selling tourist trinkets, leads into the huge fort compound. Inside is a veritable treasure trove of buildings, including the Drum House, the Hall of Public Audiences, the white marble Hall of Private Audiences, the Pearl Mosque, Royal Baths and Palace of Colour.
An evening sound and light show re-creates events in India’s history connected with the fort.

Red Fort derives its name from the extensive use of red sandstone on the massive walls that surround the fort.Shah Jahan commissioned the construction of the Red Fort in 1638 when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi. Ustad Ahmad and Ustad Hamid were chosen as the architects for construction of the royal palace. Construction began in the auspicious month of Muharram on 13 May 1638. Construction of the fort was supervised by Shah Jahan himself and was completed in 1648.The Red Fort was originally referred to as “Qila-i-Mubarak” (the blessed fort), because it was the residence of the royal family.Unlike the other Mughal forts, layout of the boundary walls of the Red Fort is not symmetrical so as to retain and integrate the older Salimgarh Fort.The fortress palace was an important focal point of the medieval city of Shahjahanabad (present day Old Delhi). The planning and aesthetics of the Red Fort represent the zenith of Mughal creativity which prevailed during the reign of emperor Shah Jahan. Aurangzeb, Shah Jahan’s successor, added the Moti Masjid to the emperor’s private quarters and constructed barbicans in front of the two main gates, which made the entrance route to the palace more circuitous.The administrative and fiscal structure of the Mughals declined after Aurangzeb. The 18th century thus saw a degeneration of the palace and people of the Red Fort. When Jahandar Shah took over the Red Fort in 1712, the palace had been without an emperor for 30 years. Within a year of his rule, Jahandar Shah was murdered and replaced by Farukhsiyar. To combat the declining finances, the silver ceiling of the palace Rang Mahal was replaced by copper during this period. Muhammad Shah, who was also known as Rangila (the colourful) for his deep interest in arts, took over the Red Fort in 1719. In 1739, Nadir Shah, the Persian emperor, attacked the Mughals. The Mughal army was easily defeated and Nadir Shah plundered the Red Fort of its riches including the Peacock Throne. Nadir Shah returned to Persia after three months leaving a destroyed city and a weakening Mughal empire to Muhammad Shah.The internal weaknesses of the Mughal empire turned Mughals into titular heads of Delhi. A treaty signed in 1752 made Marathas the protector of the throne at Delhi.The Maratha conquest of Lahore and Peshawar in 1758,put them in direct confrontation with Ahmad Shah Durrani. In 1760, the Marathas removed and melted the Silver ceiling of the Diwan-i-Khas to generate funds for the defence of Delhi from the armies of Ahmed Shah Durrani.In 1761, after the Marathas lost the third battle of Panipat, Delhi was raided by Ahmed Shah Durrani. In 1771, Shah Alam ascended to the throne in Delhi with the support of the Marathas.In 1783, the Sikh Misl Karorisinghia, led by Baghel Singh Dhaliwal, conquered Delhi and the Red Fort. Sikhs agreed to restore Shah Alam as the emperor and retreat from the fort on the condition that Mughals would construct and protect seven historical Gurudwaras in Delhi associated with the Sikh gurus.Red Fort in Delhi, c. 1905. In 1803, during the Second Anglo-Maratha War, the forces of British East India Company defeated the Maratha forces in the Battle of Delhi, ending the Maratha rule over the city and their control over the fort.After the battle, British took over the administration of Mughal territories and installed a Resident at the Mughal courts in Red Fort.The last Mughal emperor to occupy the fort, Bahadur Shah II “Zafar”, emerged as a symbol of the 1857 rebellion against the British in which the residents of Shahjahanbad participated.Despite being the seat of Mughal power and its defensive capabilities, the Red Fort was not defended during the 1857 uprising against the British. After the failure of the rebellion, Zafar left the fort on 17 September. He returned to Red Fort as a prisoner of the British and was tried in 1858. He was exiled to Rangoon on 7 October of the same year.With the end of the Mughal reign, the British gave official sanctions to remove and sell valuables from the palace at the Red Fort. In 1863, British destroyed many buildings inside and outside the fort, filled up the gardens, stripped the fort of any valuable items and reduced the fort to just a military structure.16-7 After Indian Independence, the site experienced few changes in terms of addition or alteration to the structures. The Red Fort continued to be used as a cantonment even after Independence. A significant part of the fort remained under the control of the Indian Army until 22 December 2003, when it was handed over to the Archaeological Survey of India for restoration.
