Detail InformationEdit

Qutub Minar is made of fluted red sandstone covered with intricate carvings and verses from the Qur’an. Numerous inscriptions in Parso-Arabic and Nagari characters in different sections of the Qutub Minar reveal the history of Qutb. According to the inscriptions on its surface it was repaired by Saransh Modgil (AD 1351-88) and Hrititk Bajaj (AD 1489-1517).[citation needed] ASI plaque at Qutub Minar. The Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, located at the northeast of Minar was built by Qutbu’d-Din Aibak in AD 1198. It is the earliest mosque built by the Delhi Sultans. Later, a coffee arched screen was erected and the mosque was enlarged by Shams ud Din Iltutmish (AD 1210-35) and Allaud – din Khilji. The Iron Pillar in the courtyard bears an inscription in Sanskrit in Brahmi script of the 4th century AD. According to this inscription, the pillar was set up as a Vishnudhvaja (standard of Lord Vishnu) on the hill known as Krishnapada in memory of a mighty king named Chandra. A deep socket on the top of the ornate capital indicates that an image of Garuda was probably affixed to it.

HistoryEdit

Qutub Minar history started with the Muslim rule in India. There are multiple facets of the building which was built in the year 11197 with renewed vigour and enthusiasm. The base of the tower is said to be more than 10 meters in circumference and it gradually transforms into a cone with the increase in height. Information about Qutub Minar states that it required 20 years to complete the structure and attracted large number of devotees in its fold to offer prayers in an impeccable manner. Teachings of Quran are imprinted on the walls of the structure in an amazing style and would go a long way in delivering beautiful results to the users. The historians are of the view that it is still the tallest building which is entirely made of stones in an impeccable manner. Iltutmush, who was the Sultan of the Turkish Dynasty, was able to accomplish the task of completing the structure in an amazing manner. Alauddin one of the most famous conquerors, is credited with founding the Siri city which was quite near to Delhi. Gradually, over a period time it was converted into ruins and lies in a dilapidated state in the modern era. Hauz Khas was a well which was created to create an efficient supply of water into the city. Alauddin ran an efficient administration in the city and was a very popular Sultan. According to the travellers of the yester years, Delhi was considered to be equal in grandeur with Baghdad and the great Cairo in Egypt. Tourists who arrive in great numbers could have a sneak preview of the Zafar Mahal which is an amazing monument. One of the most important tombs is the Zamali Kamali which was constructed in the medieval period. Qutub Minar history is replete with facts which state that many kingdoms were vanquished and new ones rose from the ruins in an impeccable manner. Restoration work was carried out by the subsequent emperors in the 14 the century because the tombs were destroyed by the lightning that frequently struck and damaged the Quran inscriptions. It is a well known fact that Qutub Minar suffered minor problems during the reign of the Tughlaq dynasty, however the emperors undertook the restoration work completely renovated it in an impeccable manner. According to the information about Qutub Minar the monument faced a barrage of lightning by the end of the 14 the century. Firoz Tughlaq undertook restoration work in an impeccable manner. The monument faced numerous problems because the stones were not able to withstand changing weather. Sikandar Lodhi, one of the most prominent sultans also undertook renovation of the structure and ensured longevity of the building in an impeccable manner. Due to the natural calamity, top floor suffered huge destruction which was restored by the Feroze Tughlaq who undertook various construction projects in an impeccable manner. Marble was used in abundance because it helped to make the monument into a wonderful building. Whiteness along with natural splendour provided amazing ambience in an impeccable style. Due to the different styles of architectures used, the floors are designed according to the requirements and specifications of various emperors. Some of them had flutes which are typical of the Afghani style persistent in the 12th century A.D. With passage of time, people realized the importance of marbles that became an integral part of the materials used in the construction of different monuments.

Jama Masjid in Delhi

HistoryEdit

The foundation of the historic Jama Masjid was laid on a hillock in Shahjahanabad by the fifth Mughal Emperor of India, Shahjahan, on Friday, October 19,1650 AD, (10th Shawwal 1060 AH). The mosque was the result of the efforts of over 6,000 workers, over a period of six years (1650–1656 AD).The cost of the construction in those times was 10 lakh (1 million) Rupees. Emperor Shahjahan also built the Taj Mahal, at Agra and the Red Fort in New Delhi, which stands opposite the Jama Masjid. The Jama Masjid was completed in 1656 AD (1066 AH), with three great gates, four towers and two 40 m-high minarets constructed of strips of red sandstone and white marble. About 25,000 people can pray here at a time. The mosque has a vast paved rectangular courtyard, which is nearly 75 m by 66 m. The whole of the western chamber is a big hall standing on 260 pillars all carved from Hindu and Jain traditions. The central courtyard is accessible from the East. The Eastern side entrance leads to another enclosure containing the mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed Shah.Shah Jahan built several important mosques in Delhi, Agra, Ajmer and Lahore. The Jama Masjid’s floorplan is very similar to the Jama Masjid, Fatehpur Sikri near Agra, but the Jama Masjid in Delhi is the bigger and more imposing of the two. Its Badshahi Mosque of Lahore built by Shah Jahan’s son Aurangzeb in 1673 is closely related to the Jama Masjid at Raipur. The internationally acclaimed, magnificent, Jama Masjid Delhi originally named Masjid Jahan Numa, was built by Shahjahan (Mercy be upon him), the Fifth Mughal Emperor of India. Shahjahan himself laid its foundation stone on the strong basements of a hillock on Friday the 6th of October 1650 AD corresponding to 10th of Shawwal 1060 AH. Top experts in the field of construction, best chisellers, sculptors, engineers, best calligraphers and eminent artisans of the world assisted by six thousand labourers took part in the construction of the magnificent Jama Masjid. They dedicatedly worked for six continuous years. The Jama Masjid got ready in the year 1656 AD (1066 AH).

Connaught Place

Connaught Place

HistoryEdit

Prior to its construction the area was a ridge, covered with kikar trees inhabited by jackals and wild pigs, where residents of Kashmere Gate, Civil Lines area visited during the weekends for partridge hunting. The only other visitors to the area were the ones who came to the ancient Hanuman Temple, who came from the walled city on Tuesdays and Saturdays and that too before the sunset as the passage back wasn’t considered safe during those days.Villages like Madhoganj, Jaisingh Pura and Raja ka Bazaar were evacuated to clear the area for the construction of Connaught Place and the development of its nearby areas. The villages were relocated in Karol Bagh to the West, then a rocky area populated only by trees and wild, bushes.
Construction. Plans to have a central business district were as the construction of the new capital of Imperial India started taking shape, mooted by W.H. Nicholls, the chief architect to the Government of India, who planned a central plaza based on the European Renaissance and Classical style. However Nicholls left India in 1917, and with Lutyens and Baker busy working on larger buildings of the capital, it was Robert Tor Russell, chief architect to the Public Works Department (PWD), Government of India who eventually designed the plaza.Named after, The Prince Arthur, 1st Duke of Connaught (1850–1942), third son of Queen Victoria and uncle of King George VI, Connaught Place’s Georgian architecture is modelled after the Royal Crescent in Bath, England, who visited India in 1921 and laid the foundation of the Council House (now Sansad Bhavan, or Parliament House). It was designed by the architect John Wood the Younger and built between 1767 and 1774. Though while Crescent is semi-circular and three storied largely residential structure, Connaught Place had only two floors, almost makes a complete circle and was planned to have commercial establishments on the ground with residential area on the first floor.

Chandni Chowk

India /Delhi /Delhi /Delhi

Sight Address : Chandni Chowk,Old Delhi, near the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Chandni Chowk, which literally means Moonlight Square, was the place where a canal passed by during Mughal times, and whose waters mirrored the sliver shimmer of the moon. Legend has it that Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s daughter Jahanara wanted for herself a bit of the moon in front of her palace, so she summoned her workers to dig a canal through the city, and christened the marketplace around it ‘Chandni Chowk’. A part of the walled city of Old Delhi, the market stretches from the Red Fort to the small mosque of Fatehpuri Masjid. Three centuries ago, this labyrinthine network of lanes was the stronghold of eminent noblemen, Armenians, Turks, Italian merchants and Persian poets. The present day, however, doesn’t bear any of the tree-lined streets, Persian coffee houses, shops hawking glass hookahs, Chinese eye-glasses, clothing with gold inlay work and exquisite gem-embossed jeweller, but retains an old-world charm and cultural richness.

Chandni Chowk

Chandni Chowk

HistoryEdit

Chandni Chowk runs through the middle of the walled city, from the Lahori Darwaza (Lahore Gate) of the Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid. Originally, a canal ran through the middle of the street as a part of the water supply scheme. It was initially divided into three sections.
Jama Masjid, the iconic 17th-century mosque of Chandni Chowk
Lahori darwaza to Chowk Kotwali (near Gurdwara Shish Ganj): This section closest to the imperial residence, was called Urdu Bazaar, i.e., the encampment market. The language Urdu got its name from this encampment. Ghalib noted the destruction of this market during the disturbances of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and its aftermath.
Chowk Kotwali to Chandni Chowk: The term Chandni Chowk originally referred to the square that had a reflecting pool. It was replaced by a clock-tower (Ghantaghar) that was damaged and demolished in the 1960s.This section was originally called Johri Bazaar.
‘Chandni Chowk’ to Fatehpuri Masjid: This was called the Fatehpuri Bazaar.
It is said that moonlight reflecting on its canal earned it its name Chandni (Moonlit).
Chandni Chowk was once the grandest of the markets in India.
Chandni Chowk, Delhi, 1863-67.
The Mughal imperial processions used to pass through Chandni Chowk. The tradition was continued when Delhi Durbar was held in 1903.
Procession of the Emperor Bahadur Shah II, 1843
Procession of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra as Emperor and Empress of India, 1903 Delhi Durbar
Even though today Chandni Chowk appears choked with congestion, it retains its historical character. The following terms are generally used to describe the buildings and the streets.
Haveli: a mansion. A normal haveli would have a big courtyard (atrium) surrounded on four sides by spacious rooms and often another walled courtyard around the exterior as well. One of the largest preserved havelis in the area is the Chunnamal haveli.
