Light and Sound Show which has stood witness to Delhi’s rejuvenation, periods of anarchy, and the rise and fall of empires, is the venue for the spectacular sound and light show which brings alive the history of the capital is at historic Purana Qila or Old Fort, Amidst the tranquillity of the splendidly panoramic environs of Purana Qila select episodes from the annals of Delhi’s historic and legendary past are brought to life. The viewer is transported centuries back in time to witness Draupadi being reduced to a dasi (maid) of Hastinapur, the gallant Prithviraj Chauhan galloping away with the beauteous Samyogita, Sher Shah Suri being blown to bits by misfired cannon, the clash of a sword wielded by the legendary Razia Sultan, Humanyun tragically tumbling down the steps of his library, Bahadur Shah Zafar surrendering to the British.

Lakshmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir)is built in honour of Lakshmi (Hindu Goddess of Wealth), and her consort Narayana (Vishnu, Preserver in the Trimurti) by B. R. Birla from 1933 and 1939, when it was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. The side temples are dedicated to Shiva, Krishna and Buddha.The temple spread over 7.5 acres, is adorned with many shrines, fountains, and a large garden, and also houses Geeta Bhawan for discourses. The temple is one of the major Attractions of Delhi and attracts thousands of devotees on the Hindu festivals of Janmashtami and Holi.

The construction of temple dedicated to Laxmi Narayana started in 1933, built by industrialist and philanthropist, Baldeo Das Birla and his son Jugal Kishore Birla of Birla family, thus, the temple is also known as Birla Temple. The foundation stone of temple was laid by Maharaj Udaybhanu Singh. The temple was built under guidance of Pandit Vishwanath Shastri. The concluding ceremony and Yagna was performed by Swami Keshwa Nandji. The famous temple is accredited to have been inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1939. At that time, Mahatma Gandhi kept a condition that the temple would not be restricted to the Hindus and people from every caste would be allowed inside.Renowned as Birla Mandir, the Lakshmi Narayan temple was constructed in 1938 by the industrialist BD Birla. Located in the heart of the city on Mandir Marg, west of Connaught Place, the temple is dedicated to the Hindu deities Lakshmi (the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity) and Narayana (the Preserver). Other idols present in the temple are that of Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga.

The octagonal fort is surrounded by high buttressing walls that have been built out of red sandstone.

Jantar Mantar, with Yantra meaning instruments and Mantra meaning formulae, was built in the year 1724. Situated near Connaught Place, New Delhi Jantar Mantar counts amongst the numerous astronomical observatories erected by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur. The other observatories consist of the ones built in Jaipur, Varanasi, Ujjain and Mathura.

The Jantar Mantar was built in 1724. This was built by Maharaja Jai Singh II, the leader of Jaipur. Jai Singh was very interested in astronomy and had ordered the construction of the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. It was built with the intention of trying to accurately get readouts of where different celestial bodies are located. Jai Singh did not have much trust in the tables that many astronomers had created at the time.All these observatories were made during the period of AD 1724-1730. That was the time when Mughal Empire was rapidly declining. During this period turmoil, Muhammad Shah ascended the throne of the Mughal Empire. But since there were number of enemies surrounded him, he south the alliance of many Hindu rulers, out of whom Sawai Jai Singh II of Amber was the most notable one. Sawaii Jai Singh was barely 11 years old when throne of Amber was ascended to him in 1699 but he handled the situation so well that Mughal emperor Aurangzeb gave him the title of ‘Sawai’, meaning one and a quarter of an average man in worth. As Muhammad Shah was seeking a reliable ally with Hindu ruler, Jai Singh proved to be a dependable ally of Mughals. He was also one of the noble in Mughal court. Jai Singh was a keen astronomer and passionate about art and science mainly astronomy. Once in the court he found Hindu and Muslim astronomer having a heated argument about certain astronomical fact to find out an auspicious hour for the emperor to set out on an expedition. Jai Singh then offered to rectify the then available astronomical tables. He was dissatisfied by the brass and metal astronomical instruments and decided to correct and update the astronomical records with more accurate instruments. The result was an onside Jantar Mantar in Delhi, an astronomical observatory where the movements of sun, moon and planets could be observed.

Another highlight of the temple is beautifully drawn paintings of the Lord done by the foreign devotees. Iskcon Temple at Delhi is a magnificent shrine, one amongst the 40 temples made by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in India. Located at Sant Nagar in East of Kailash, Iskcon Temple dominates the skyline of the southern part of Delhi. Initiated by Acharya Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, ISCKON is a society that belongs to Hare Rama Hare Krishna cult. The original name of this temple is Sri Radha-Parthasarthy Temple. Being made by the ISCKON, the temple is popular by the name of Isckon Temple. Built in 1998, Iskcon Temple can be easily reached by taking local buses, auto-rickshaws or by hiring taxis from the city.ISKCON Temple, designed and built by Achyut Kanvinde who in 1993 agreed to accept a pro-bono commission to build this temple complex for the followers of Srila Prabhupada,is one of the largest temple complexes in India. It comprises numerous rooms for priests and for service renders. It has many halls that are used for its administration purposes. It is divided into four broad sections.The Hare-Rama Hare-Krishna sect followers built a series of Iskcon temples all over India and even in many other countries. Iron pillar weighing over 6 tonnes, more than 7 metres tall is constructed in a single forge and is erected on top of the Vishnupada hill (somewhere in modern central India) with sanskrit inscriptions on it in the brahmi script about the great Gupta ruler Chandragupta Vikramaditya. Later the founder of Delhi, Tomar king Anangapala brings it to Delhi and installs it in its current place (See above pic). The Mughal emperor Akbar makes every effort to have the inscriptions read, but at that time nobody knows about the script in which the inscriptions have been written, so the effort fails.

Iron Pillar history is said to be as legendary as the capital city history. The complex in which this pillar is standing has Qutab Minar on its right side. There is a huge study going on this pillar for its composition as it has stand all the seasons of 1600 years and haven’t got corrosion which symbolises the great technique and capability of the blacksmiths of that time period.The blacksmith put hard wrought iron in such a form that it remained standing for a long period of time without any damage on its outer shell. The iron pillar was initially stood in a Jain Mandir which 27 other pillar but Qutb-ud-din Aybak destroyed the other pillar and shifted this pillar to Qutab complex.About Iron Pillar there are many myths which tell that this was erected first in the year 32912 BC where was some concluding this to be 375-413 AD. The height of the pillar from top to the bottom is about 7.21m and its bell pattern is about 3ft and 6inches. The base of this grid is soldered with lead which provided this pillar a firm standing place on the dressed stone pavement. The lower diameter of this pillar is about 16.5inches whereas as the upper is about 12inches.The iron pillar of Delhi is located in Qutab Minar complex and weights near six to seven tons. The height of this iron pillar is about 7meters and the composition of this pillar is considered to be made up of 99% pure wrought iron. The pillar is standing without any protection from raining or sunlight for the last 1600 years.

International Trade Fair Exhibition Centre is situated in Pragati Maidan, which is the famous site for conducting the annual India International Trade Fair or IITF. This centre was founded in 1982 and since then an annual fair is conducted at this venue, including different pavilions of the states in India. The trade fair is conducted in the month of November inside the seven acres land that has permanent buildings for exhibition from all the states of the country.Some of the famous pavilions in this centre are the Defence Pavilion, the Nehru Pavilion, the Indira Pavilion, the Village Complex and the Son of India Pavilion. It has four main entrances that are usually very crowded during the time of trade fair. During this fair, more than 6,000 companies from India and other Asian countries participate in the exhibition. This annual fair is organised by International Trade Promotion Organisation.

It is a leading event organized by the India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO).The IITF is held every year at Pragati Maidan, Delhi, from November 14th to 27th. It has various building which are build in various shapes and sizes. It also has an auditorium where Rock shows and plays are held quite frequently. There is also an internal shuttle service for those who do not wish to walk. Pragati Maidan houses a movie theatre called Shakuntalam, it’s quite popular among college kids for its comparatively cheap tickets.

Humayun’s Tomb is located on the bank of the Yamuna river adjoins the shrine of an important Sufi Chistiyya order saint, Nizam al-Din Awliya. The Chistiyya was particularly venerated by the Mughals; Humayun’s son, Akbar, would build his new palace at Fatehpur Sikri next to the shrine of another saint of the Chistiyya order.The first Mughal Emperor, Babur, was succeeded by his son, Humayun, who ruled in India for a decade but was expelled. Eventually he took refuge with the Safavid Shah of Persia, who helped him regain Delhi in 1555, the year before his death. Humayun’s Persian wife, Hamida Begum, supervised the construction from 1562-1572 of her husband’s tomb in Delhi. The architect, Mirak Mirza Ghiyuath, was Persian and had previously designed buildings in Herat (now northwest Afghanistan), Bukhara (now Uzbekistan), and elsewhere in India.

Humayun’s Tombin Delhi

Humayun died in 1556, and his widow Hamida Banu Begam, also known as Haji Begam, commenced the construction of his tomb in 1569, fourteen years after his death. It is the first distinct example of proper Mughal style, which was inspired by Persian architecture. It is well known that Humayun picked up the principles of Persian architecture during his exile, and he himself is likely to have planned the tomb, although there is no record to that effect. The tomb was constructed at a cost of 15 lakh rupees (1.5 million).Mirak Mirza Ghiyath, a Persian, was the architect employed by Haji Begam for this tomb.The tomb proper stands in the centre of a square garden, divided into four main parterres by causeways (Charbagh), in the centre of which ran shallow water-channels. The high rubble built enclosure is entered through two lofty double-storeyed gateways on the west and south. A baradari (pavilion) occupies the centre of the eastern wall and a hammam (bath chamber) in the centre of northern wall.After his death on 20 January 1556, Humayun’s body was first buried in his palace in Purana Quila at Delhi. Thereafter it was taken to Sirhind, in Punjab by Khanjar Beg, because it was feared that Hindu king Hemu, who had defeated Mughal forces in Agra and Delhi in Oct. 1556 and captured Purana Quila, will damage the tomb. In 1558, it was seen by his son, the then Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Akbar subsequently visited the tomb when it was about to be completed in 1571.The tomb of Humayun was built by the orders of Bega Begum, Humayun’s first wife and chief consort, and begun in 1565, nine years after his death, and completed in 1572 AD at a cost of 1.5 million rupees at the time.[7] According to Ain-i-Akbari, a 16th-century detailed document written during the reign of Akbar, Haji Begum supervised the construction of the tomb after returning from Mecca and undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage.According to `Abd al-Qadir Bada’uni, one of the few contemporary historians to mention its construction, the architect of the tomb was the Persian architect, Mirak Mirza Ghiyas (also referred to as Mirak Ghiyathuddin) who was brought from Herat (northwest Afghanistan), and had previously designed several buildings in Herat, Bukhara (now Uzbekistan), and others elsewhere in India. Unfortunately, before the structure’s completion, he died and so his son Sayyed Muhammad bin Mirak Ghiyathuddin completed his father’s design in 1571. An English merchant, William Finch, who visited the tomb in 1611, describes the rich interior furnishing of the central chamber (in comparison to the sparse look today). He mentioned the presence of rich carpets, and a shamiana, a small tent above the cenotaph, which was covered with a pure white sheet and with copies of the Quran in front along with his sword, turban and shoes.

Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah (Nizamuddin’s Shrine),(Urdu: نظام الدّین درگاہ ‎, Hindi: निज़ामुद्दीन दरगाह) is the dargah (mausoleum) of one of the world’s most famous Sufi saints, Nizamuddin Auliya (1238 – 1325 CE). Situated in the Nizamuddin West area of Delhi, the Dargah is visited by thousands of Muslims every week, and sees a fair share of Hindus, Christians and people from other religions. The tombs of poet Amir Khusro and Mughal princess Jehan Ara Begum are also located within the Nizamuddin Dargah complex, and Inayat Khan’s tomb is just around the corner.

Born at Badaun in Uttar Pradesh in 1236 AD, he was the disciple of saint Sheikh Farid Shakarganj, who appointed him as his successor. Mughal Emperors like Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan paid their reverence at the sacred Dargah, halting their procession. People of all faiths venerated the saint, who was popular because of his doctrine of renunciation and tolerance towards other religions. Hazrat Nizamuddin died in 1325 and his shrine today is a renowned pilgrimage site. The original tomb of Hazrat Nizamuddin no longer exists. The present structure was constructed by a nobleman named Faridun Khan in the mid-15th century. It was renovated and decorated by Firoz Shah Tughlaq, as well as by later rulers. It has a marble-paved courtyard where the sacred shrine of the saint can be seen. Shah Jahan later added the majestic pavilion with its marble arches and lattice screens known as jalis. Worshippers tie red threads to these jalis as signs of wishes they hope will be fulfilled. The roof, presumably constructed by Akbar II, is crested by a dome decked by vertical black stripes. The main grave is wrapped with a scented dark green coloured cloth.The revered saint was popular among people of all faiths because of his doctrine of renunciation and tolerance towards other religions. It is said that he prophesied Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq would never return to Delhi again and the ruler died soon after. Hazrat Nizamuddin died in 1325 and his shrine today is a popular pilgrimage site.Hazrat Nizamuddin’s original tomb no longer exists. A mosque and many other tombs of famous people surround the Dargah, as they wished to be buried near the saint.

HistoryEdit

Gurdwara Bangla Sahib was originally a bungalow belonging to Raja Jai Singh, an Indian ruler in the seventeenth century, and was known as Jaisinghpura Palace, in Jaisingh Pura, an historic neighbourhood demolished to make way for the Connaught Place, shopping district.The eighth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Krishan resided here during his stay in Delhi in 1664. During that time, there was a smallpox and cholera epidemic, and Guru Har Krishan helped the suffering by giving aid and fresh water from the well at this house. Soon he too contracted the illness and eventually died on March 30, 1664. A small tank was later constructed by Raja Jai Singh over the well, its water is now revered as having healing properties and is taken by Sikhs throughout the world back to their homes.The Gurdwara and its Sarovar are now a place of great reverence for Sikhs, and a place for special congregation on birth anniversary of Guru Har Krishan. GURUDWARA SHRI BANGLA SAHIB is situated in the Delhi City. Built in the sacred visit of SHRI GURU HARKARISHAN JI to delhi. At the request of Mughal King Aurangzeb and through the persuation of Mirza Raja Jai Singh of Amber, GURU JI agreed to come to Delhi. Raja Jai Singh invited GURU JI to the present site which originally belonged to Raja Jai Singh. Rajas wife thought of testing the spiritual powers of the GURU and disguised herself as maid servant and sat among the attendants. GURU SAHIB at the age of 8 years identified the RANI and sat in her lap. Thus convincing her of the the spiritual powers of GURU NANAK and his True Disciplines. In those days small pox was raging in the city of Delhi on an epidemic form. The citizens of Delhi suffered grief and death. As a result of calamity that had befallen there. GURU JI out of love and compassion for suffering humanity dipped his holy feet in water and poured Charan Amrit into small chaubacha (tank). All those who took water from caubacha were cured from the disease. Thus the people of Delhi were saved from that epidemic. Devotees with faith and devotion come from far and near and get rid of suffering by taking a dip in the holy water.
