HistoryEdit

The Jal Mahal of Rajasthan was built by the ruler of Amer in the water reservoir which is known as the Man Sagar lake. The body was built to deal with the prevailing draught in the state and this reservoir helped to cope up with the condition and provided irrigation facility throughout the year. The palace in the middle was restored to it’s original state by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the 18th century and during it was the time during which the city of Jaipur got it’ famous forts like Nahargarh, Jaigarh and Amer fort. The garden Kanak Vrindavan Valley was also built during the phase. It was the time when Rajputana architectural style obtained the marvellous monuments and all this credit goes to Maharaja Jai Singh II.A dam was constructed, initially using earth and quartzite, across the eastern valley between Amer hills and Amagarh hills. The dam was later converted into a stone masonry structure in the 17th century. The dam, as existing now (see picture), is about 300 metres (980 ft) long and 28.5–34.5 metres (94–113 ft) in width. It is provided with three sluice gates for release of water for irrigation of agricultural land in the down stream area.

Govind Devji Temple

India /Rajasthan /Jaipur /Jaipur

Sight Address : Govind Devji Temple, Jaipur Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Govind Dev Ji Temple is one amongst the major tourist attractions of Jaipur, which represents the royal past of the city. The Temple is dedicated to Govind Dev Ji (another name of Lord Krishna). Govind Devji Temple of Jaipur is situated in the City Palace complex, between the Chandra Mahal and Badal Mahal. Govind Dev Ji is the principal deity of Amber’s Kachawaha Dynasty. In earlier times, the idol of the lord used to reside in the temple of Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh.

Govind Devji Temple

Govind Devji Temple

HistoryEdit

Govind Devji Temple,As is the Legend, the Holy Image of Lord Govind Devji was also called “BAJRAKRIT” communicating thereby that it was created by Bajranabh – The Great Grand Son of Lord Shri Krishna. Some 5,000 years back when Shri Bajranabh was around 13 years of age, he asked his Grand Mother (daughter-in-law of Lord Krishna) as to how Lord Shri Krishna looked like; Then He made an image as per the description given by her. She however, said that not all but the Feet of that image looked like those of Lord Shri Krishna. He made another image, yet she said that the Chest looked like that of Lord Shri Krishna. Thereafter, He made the Third Image and looking at the same she felt Blush and Nodded that yes that was what Lord Shri Krishna Looked Like!!! The First One came to be known with the Name Lord “Madan Mohanji”. The Second One got recognition as Lord “Gopi Nathji”. And the Third One, The Live Divine Majestic Holy Image is Lord “Govind Devji”. With passing of ages the glories of the Indian Culture were being forgotten and the sands of time kept piling up. Together with every other thing these pious divine images were also lost from the memories of people. Some 500 years ago Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took his birth on the Indian Soil and did the massive work to remove the layers of ignorance & infuse back in our lives the forgotten vitality of great grand Indian Past.Vrindavn Dham had become almost a Jungle by the early 16th Century. No trace of the original place was left at the site.Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had visited the site in 1514 A.D. and had discovered some of the places mentioned in the Bhagvat Purana. But he was not able to stay here long enough to bring out the complete Glory of The Place. The History was enriched with a Golden Page When before the foundation of Jaipur City, Thakur Shri Radha-Govind Devji Maharaj Enshrined in The Present Mandir Shri Govind Devji Maharaj, Jaipur at Jai Niwas Gardens; and extended His Divine Blessing Hand to the foundation of this world class heritage city, the Pink City of India. The idol of Lord Govind Dev Ji was brought by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II from Vrindavan to his own palace, Surya Mahal. The king was inspired by a dream, in which Lord Krishna told him to install the idol in his palace, to save it from being destroyed by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Later, he built his new palace, Chandra Mahal, which became his residence. The temple of Lord Govind Dev Ji is dedicated to Lord Krishna and boasts of the royal past of Jaipur city. The temple is an extraordinary representation of the architecture of Jaipur as seen during the reign of the Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of the city. It is a very important spiritual and religious destination for Hindus, especially the devotees of Lord Krishna.

Detail InformationEdit

Chandra Mahal is situated inside the main City Palace, which occupies around one-seventh area of the city. Chandra Mahal

HistoryEdit

Chandra Mahal or Chandra Niwas is the most commanding building in the City Palace complex, on its west end. It is a seven storeyed building and each floor has been given a specific name such as the Sukh-Niwas, Ranga-Mandir, Pitam-Niwas, Chabi-Niwas, Shri-Niwas and Mukut-Mandir or Mukut Mahal. It contains many unique paintings, mirror work on walls and floral decorations. At present, most of this palace is the residence of the descendents of the former rulers of Jaipur. Only the ground floor is allowed for visitors where a museum is located that displays carpets, manuscripts and other items that belonged to the royal family. There is beautiful peacock gate at the entry to the Mahal. It has screened balconies and a pavilion at the roof from where a panoramic view of the city can been seen. It is set amidst well laid out gardens and a decorative lake in the foreground.City Palace, Jaipur, which includes the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal palaces and other buildings, is a palace complex in Jaipur, the capital of the Rajasthan state, India. It was the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the head of the Kachwaha Rajput clan. The Chandra Mahal palace now houses a museum but the greatest part of it is still a royal residence. The palace complex, which is located northeast of the centre of the grid patterned Jaipur city, incorporates an impressive and vast array of courtyards, gardens and buildings. The palace was built between 1729 and 1732, initially by Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber. He planned and built the outer walls, and later additions were made by successive rulers right up to the 20th century. The credit for the urban layout of the city and its structures is attributed to two architects namely, Vidyadar Bhattacharya, the chief architect in the royal court and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, apart from the Sawai himself who was a keen architectural enthusiast. The architects achieved a fusion of the Shilpa Shastra of Indian architecture with Rajput, Mughal and European styles of architecture.

Amber Palace Museum in Jaipur

Amber Palace Museum in Jaipur

HistoryEdit

Amber Palace Museum is part of Amber Fort.Overlooking the Delhi Jaipur Highway, the image of the Amber Fort is beautifully reflected in the lake below. Within the Amer Fort lies the famous Jai Mandir (Temple) with its world renowned Sheesh Mahal, a hall full of Mirrors. The walls and the ceiling of the Mahal are covered with a beautiful array of mirrors, which reflect any streak of light, so as to illuminate the entire room. Located 9 Kms north west of Jaipur, the Amber Fort was once the Capital of the Minas. Falling under the Golden Triangle, and being visited by millions of domestic and foreign tourists, the city of Jaipur is a place of high tourist interest. The Pink City, as commonly known, has all sorts of amenities for domestic and foreign tourists. Hotels ranging from 5 stars to low budgets are available, as it attracts high tourist traffic in winters.
The front courtyard of the complex, is adorned with the magnificent, pillared hall of the Diwan – i – Am, and the two – tiered painted gateway Ganesh Pol. The palace of mirrors, Sheesh Mahal, is of special interest. It has walls inlaid with exquisite mirrors. The Jas Mandir, perched on the upper floor, is a superb amalgam of Mughal and Rajput style of architecture, as is evident from the exquisitely carved Jali screens, and fine mirror and stucco work. The fort is entered through the ‘Dil-e-Aaram’ Garden, laid out in the traditional Mughal style. An imposing flight of stairs leads to the ‘Diwan-E-Am’ (hall of public audience) which has latticed galleries and double row of columns each having a capital in the shape of elephants on the top. To the right are steps that lead to the small Kali Temple. Maharaja Man Singh was a great devotee of Goddess Kali and prayed to the Goddess for victory during battles. The temple has huge doors made of silver. The larger white marble Shila Mata temple, has the image of Goddess Kali, brought by Raja Man Singh from Jessore in East Bengal (now Bangladesh). The Fort also has remnants of its rich past and the oldest of ruins dates back to the 16th century. The fort can be divided into four segments and there are two ways of reaching – one is by climbing the daunting flight of steps and the other is by riding on elephant back through the expansive passageway. The intriguing Jaleb Chowk is the central courtyard and in the days of yore the victorious royal armed forces were received and greeted here and presented their war booty to the general public.

Amber Fort

India /Rajasthan /Jaipur /Jaipur

Sight Address : Amber Fort, Maota Lake near Amer village, about 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) Edit

Detail InformationEdit

City of Amber, which was once the capital of the Kachhawaha Rajputs, traces its history over such a wide span of centuries that there are many tales and fables attached to the construction of this majestic Fort city. The colossal grandeur of Amber Fort is fascinating evidence of the grandeur of ancient times. It lies peacefully, just 11 kms away from the capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur.

Amber Fort

HistoryEdit

Amber fort, was known in the medieval period as Dhundar (meaning attributed to a sacrificial mount in the western frontiers) and ruled by the Kachwahas from the 11th century onwards – between 1037 and 1727 AD, till the capital was moved from Amer to Jaipur. The history of Amer is indelibly linked to these rulers as they founded their empire at Amer.Earlier to the Kachwahas, Amer was a small place built by [Meenas] in the town they consecrated to Amba, the Mother Goddess, whom they knew as `Gatta Rani’ or `Queen of the Pass’. The Amer Fort, as it stands now, was built over the remnants of this earlier structure during the reign of Raja Man Singh, the Kacchwaha King of Amber. The structure was fully expanded by his descendant, Jai Singh I. Even later, Amer Fort underwent improvements and additions by successive rulers over the next 150 years, until the Kachwahas shifted their capital to Jaipur during the time of Sawai Jai Singh II, in 1727. Many of the ancient structures of the medieval period of the Meenas have been either destroyed or replaced. However, the 16th century impressive edifice of the Amer Fort and the palace complex within it built by the Rajput Maharajas are very well preserved. The history of the Amber Palace goes back seven centuries; some of the earlier structures are in ruins. However, those built in the 16th century and afterwards are still in excellent shape. The Rajputs who had apparently won a small structure passed on by Meena tribes, later on renovated it to its present status – the grand Amber Palace. Thus, Amber became the ancient capital of the Kachhwaha Rajputs until Sawai Jai Singh II moved down the hill to his newly created capital, Jaipur. The Kachchwaha belonged to the Kshatriya, or the warrior caste of Hindus, but they traced their origins back to the sun, via Kusa who the twin son of the God Rama. This palace served as the capital for the Maharajas of this region, until Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh felt that the time was right to start a new city, which he named after himself – Jaipur.

Albert Hall

HistoryEdit

Albert Hall, located a few hundred meters away from Pink city, facing the City, welcomes every visitor of the city. Albert Hall is a museum, which is supposed to be the oldest in the Rajasthan state. It was designed by Colonel Swinton Jacob in 1876 to welcome King Edward VII as Prince of Wales on his visit to Jaipur. The Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur is one of the finest museums of the 19th Century. It was envisioned by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh-II & bought to life by Thomas Holbein Handley. The Albert Hall building was designed by Sir Samual Swinton Jacob. It is now a house of antiquities. When the foundation stone of Albert Hall was laid during the visit of the Prince of Wales, Albert Edward to Jaipur in 1876, it had yet to be determined what use it would be put to. There were some suggestions about cultural or educational use or as a town hall. However in 1880 Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II approved a suggestion by Dr. Thomas Holbein Hendley, Resident Surgeon (whose interests extended beyond his medical responsibilities) to open a museum of Industrial Arts to display products of local craftsmen. A small museum was created in 1881 in temporary accommodation and proved most popular. Additionally, Hendley in 1883 mounted a Jaipur Exhibition at Naya Mahal (old Vidhan Sabha). The purpose of these exercises was to acquaint local craftsmen with the best examples of art work and handicrafts of India to inspire them to improve their skills, thereby protecting and preserving traditional art and reviving skills, while providing greater employment for artisans. It was also the intention that the display would help to educate youth in a wide variety of fields, entertain and inform the people of Jaipur. The Albert Hall was completed in 1887 by the architect Samuel Swinton Jacob,Director of Jaipur PWD. The temporary museum and the exhibition whose artefacts had been collected from several parts of India and its neighbourhood were merged and shifted to their permanent home in the new museum. The building itself became an integral part of the display, its Indo-Saracenic architecture and stone ornamentation, became a source of reference for varied classical Indian styles of design from Mughal to Rajput. Even the corridors were decorated with murals in a variety of styles including the Ramayan, reproducing paintings from illustrations in the Persian Razmnama prepared for Emperor Akbar. European, Egyptian, Chinese, Greek and Babylonian civilizations were portrayed in the other murals to enable the people of the region to compare and contrast them with their own and develop their knowledge of history and art.

Nahargarh Fort

India /Rajasthan /Jaipur /Jaipur

Sight Address : Nahargarh Fort,10 km (6 miles) north of Jaipur off Amber Rd., Jaipur, Rajasthan, 302002 Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Nahargarh Fort stands at the top of rugged point of the Aravalis and offers a spectacular view of the City. Keeping this fact in mind, the fort was made to serve as a means of supporting the security of Amer. The term “Nahargarh” refers to “the Abode of Tigers”, so it is also known as the Tiger Fort.

Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort

HistoryEdit

Nahargarh Fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, founder of Jaipur, on the Aravalli hills, as a retreat place. Nahargarh Fort is connected to the Jaigarh Fort through its fortifications. It is believed that the construction of this fort was obstructed by the spirit of a Rathore prince, Nahar Singh Bhomia. However, the spirit was pacified when a temple dedicated to him was built inside the fort. Sawai Ram Singh renovated this fort in 1868. Built mainly in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, the fort was constructed as a place of retreat on the summit of the ridge above the city. Walls extended over the surrounding hills, forming fortifications that connected this fort to Jaigarh, the fort above the old capital of Amber. Though the fort never came under attack during the course of its history, it did see some historical events, notably the treaties with the Maratha forces who warred with Jaipur in the 18th century. During the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the Europeans of the region, including the British Resident’s wife, were moved to Nahargarh fort by the king of Jaipur, Sawai Ram Singh, for their protection. The fort was extended in 1868 during the reign of Sawai Ram Singh. In 1883-92, a range of palaces was built at Nahargarh by Sawai Madho Singh at a cost of nearly three and a half lakh rupees. The Madhavendra Bhawan, built by Sawai Madho Singh had suites for the queens of Jaipur and at the head was a suite for the king himself. The rooms are linked by corridors and still have some delicate frescos. Nahargarh was also a hunting residence of the Maharajas. Encircled by the Nahargarh hills, Nahargarh Fort was built by Sawai Jai Singh in 1734. The fort was constructed to provide a retreat for the royal women. Currently the fort lies in ruins now as and later on some splendid additions were made by the successors during the 19th century. This fort played a vital historic role during the Sepoy revolt of 1857. Europeans escaping from the mutiny fallout from the neighbouring states took shelter in this fort.
