Thiksey Monastery, Leh, India

HistoryEdit

In the early 15th century, Tsongkhapa, the founder of the reformed Gelugpa School (the Yellow hat sect), sent six of his disciples to remote regions of Tibet to spread the teachings of the new school. Tsongkhapa gave one of his disciples, Sherab Sangpo, a small statue of Amitayus (Chepakmet), the Buddha of longevity who is invoked for long life, health and happiness. It contained bone powder and a drop of Tsongkhapa’s own blood. Tsongkhapa directed him to meet the King of Ladakh with a message seeking his help in the propagation of Buddhist religion.[5][6] The King, who was then staying in the Nubra valley near Shey, greatly liked the gift of the statue. After this meeting, the King directed his minister to help Sherab Sangpo to establish a monastery of the Gelugpa order in Ladakh. As a result, in 1433, Sangpo founded a small village monastery called Lhakhang Serpo (meaning Yellow temple) in the village of Stagmo, to the north of the Indus River. In spite of his efforts, the lamas who embraced the Gelugpa order, were initially few, although some of his disciples became eminent figures over the years.Tsong khapa pictured behind a prayer wheel, located in the steps that lead to the main part of Tikshe monastery.
In the mid 15th century, Palden Sangpo continued the monastic work started by his teacher, Sherab Sangpo. He decided to build a larger monastery here that was dictated by an unusual event that occurred while choosing the site for the monastery. Legends narrate that Tsongkhapa had predicted that his doctrine would prosper on the right bank of the Indus River. This prediction came true when the Thiksey monastery was established first. This was followed by others such as the Spituk and Likir monasteries, which are also situated on the right bank of the Indus.According to another legend, Sherab Sangpo and Palden Sangpo were performing some sacred rituals near the Sangmo Lakhang. The ritual offerings (known in local language as torma (ritual cakes) made from sattu or chickpea flour) were then taken to a rock outcrop to be thrown down to the valley. As they were about to throw the torma into the valley, two crows appeared suddenly from somewhere and carried away the ceremonial plate with the offering of torma. They then placed the torma at a location on the other side of the hill. When Palden Sangpo and his disciples began looking for the torma, they reached Thiksey, where they found that the crow had placed the torma on a stone in perfect order and in an undisturbed condition. Palden took this finding as a divine directive to build the monastery here.

ey Monastery, Leh, India

Shey Monastery, Leh,India

HistoryEdit

Shey was the old capital of the upper Ladakh region. When the Dogras of Jammu invaded Ladakh in 1842, the Namgyals abandoned the palace and fled to Stok (they made it their permanent residence) on the opposite side of the Indus River. It is conjectured that the fort found in ruins, not dated, above the present palace at Shey, belonged to this period of invasion.Subsequently when the political dictates necessitated shifting of the capital to Leh, even then the importance of Shey continued since it was a mandatory requirement of the Namgyal kings to father their heir apparent here.

HistoryEdit

Over the course of the ride the scenery changes from verdant deodar forests and flower filled valleys to the barren lunar landscapes with towering peaks and hanging glaciers. As well as the spectacular surroundings, the rich culture of the Ladakhis is also a highlight and as our route weaves its way across the Himalaya we can see monasteries majestically perched on high spurs, and cycle off to explore little-visited areas, enjoying the tranquility and beauty of a genuinely untouched land. Running the trip in this direction entails more climbing overall, but offers the best opportunity to fully acclimatize and cycle the full route.

Matho Monastery

India /Jammu & Kashmir /Leh /Leh

Sight Address : Matho Monastery is 26 kms away from the Leh city near the Indus River bank. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Situated right across Thiksey Matho Monastery on the bank of Indus river, the 16th century Matho Monastery is about 20 km south of Leh in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. Founded by Lama Dugpa Dorje, Matho is the only monastery which follows Sakya order of Tibetan Buddhism. Matho monastery is modeled on the Saskya monastery in Tibet. The monastery houses about 60 lamas and 30 novitiates. Matho Monastery is popular for the celebration of festival called Matho Nagrang. It is also famous for its oracles. During festivals, the Cham dance and the act of oracles are breathtaking. The acts of oracles under the influence of supernatural powers, leaves everyone in awe and fear as the oracles often run barefoot on the parapets of the monastery roof. The festival of the oracles is held during the Buddhist New Year, which falls usually in the first half of March. The lamas, chosen as oracles every three year, have to undergo months of fasting and meditation to purify themselves. While in trance, the oracles answer questions about the future of Matho and Ladakh as well as personal questions The monastery comprises Dukhang, temples and chapels. Dukhang, the assembly hall of the monastery, are full of wall paintings. Besides the paintings of Buddha and other deities, the monastery also has statues of Maitreya, Sakyamuni, the blessing Buddha and a thousand-armed statue of Avalokitesvara.

HistoryEdit

Founded in 1410 century by Lama Dugpa Dorje, it belongs to the Sakya Order. It is noted for its six hundred year old thangkas and its Matho Nagrang Festival. The gompa is the only one in Ladakh belonging to the Sakyapa and is said to be one of the few which is seeing an increase of monks in recent years.Matho is the only example in Ladakh of the Sakyapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
