Safety / WarningEdit

  • If your are trekking into the areas around Tso Moriri, or the Nubra Valley you will need an interline permit available for a 100 to 200 INR from any travel agent in Leh, although you are unlikely to have it checked unless you are driving out or in to the area. To climb Stok Kangri you need a permit from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) which you can get for 2000 INR, the office is near the beginning of Chanspa Road in Leh. Technically you need approval for other peaks as well but Stok Kangri is the only one you are likely to get checked. Other than that Ladakh remains blissfully free of the infamous Indian red tape.

Safety / WarningEdit

  • Ladakh is one of the safest parts of India, and the most basic precautions are enough to keep you and your possessions safe. Most of the region is dotted with military cantonments every 50-80 kms, but mainly because of its strategic position on international border between India and China. The army plays major part in rescue and aid efforts and that is why you will require to produce identification documents or written permission from local authorities before entering some remote places.

Turtuk, Leh, India

Turtuk, Leh, India

HistoryEdit

Turtuk is a picturesque border village in Ladakh, very close to the Line of Control between India and Pakistan. During the 1971 war with Pakistan, the Indian Army recaptured the village from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Today, it is the last inhabited frontier before the border, inhabited by Balti Muslims who cultivate wheat, buckwheat, apricots and tomatoes in the fertile soil churned by the tributaries of the turbulent Shayok River, itself a headspring of the mighty Indus. Turtuk, a gruelling nine-hour drive from the district capital Leh, was opened to tourism in 2010. The region is a part of Ladakh’s Nubra Valley, accessible to Indian citizens and foreign nationals with an Inner Line Permit.

Magnetic Hil

Sight Address : Magnetic Hil is located on the Leh-Kargil-Batalik national highway, and is bordered by the Sindhu river & 30 km away from leh town at an elevation of around 14,000 feet above sea level. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Magnetic Hill is a gravity hill located near Leh in Ladakh, India. The hill is alleged to have magnetic properties strong enough to pull cars uphill and force passing aircraft to increase their altitude in order to escape magnetic interference; in reality, the effect is an optical illusion created by the gravity hill. The “magnetic hill” is located on the Leh-Kargil-Baltik national highway, about 30 km from Leh, at a height of 14,000 feet above sea level. On its eastern side, flows the Sindhu, which originates in Tibet and goes to Pakistan The hill is located on the Leh-Kargil-Batalik national highway, and is bordered by the Sindhu river. The Indian Army maintains a sikh Gurudwara near the hill where Guru Nanak Dev, the first of the Ten Gurus of Sikhism, meditated in the 15th century. Due to both the Gurudwara and the gravity hill, the area has become a popular sightseeing destination.
