Alchi Monastery

India / Jammu & Kashmir/ Ladakh/ Ladakh

Sight Address : Alchi Monastery is situated in Alchi village and it is 70 km west from leh. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Alchi Monastery is located near the small village of Saspol. It is one of the earliest monasteries built in Ladakh, dating from the 11th century. Because it was constructed before the invading wars begun in the 15th century, Alchi was built on lowlands, rather than on a hilltop as other gompas were, to protect them from marauding armies. The gompa at Alchi was erected by Rin-chen-Izghimpo, one of the first Ladakhi kings to engage in foreign relations. To build the monastery, the Ladakhi king signed a treaty with the Gyalpo (king) of Tibet, who agreed to provide the artisans. The rambling monastery has six main buildings the Dukhang or main assembly hall, the Sum-tsek or three-tiered temple; the adjoining Manjusri Lha-khang and Lotsawa Lha-Khang temples; the Lha-khang Soma and the Kanjur-Lha-khang.

HistoryEdit

Alchi Monastery : Traditionally, the creation of the Alchi complex is attributed to the famous scholar-translator Rinchen Zangpo (958–1055) in the 10th century, along with the Lamayuru Monastery, the Wanla, the Mang-gyu and the Sumda. During the tenth century, the Tibetan King Yeshe Od of Guge, in order to spread Buddhism in the Trans Himalayan region, took the initiative by allocating 21 scholars to the region. However, due to harsh climatic and topographic conditions, only two survived, one of them the esteemed scholar and translator Rinchen Zangpo who established Buddhist activity in the Ladakh region and other areas of India including Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim. During his sojourn there, he also went to the neighbouring countries of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. Zangpo became known by the epithet “Lohtsawa” or the “Great Translator”; he is credited with building 108 monasteries in the trans-Himalayan region in his quest to disseminate Buddhism. He institutionalized Buddhism in the region; these monasteries are considered the mainstay of Vajrayana of Tibetan Buddhism (also known as Lamaism). Zangpo engaged Kashmiri artists to create wall paintings and sculptures in the legendary 108 monasteries; only a few of these have survived, with the Alchi Monastery complex in Ladakh having pride of place among all monasteries that he built.Since the monasteries of this period did not belong to any of the established Tibetan schools, they were initially brought under the control of the Kadampa order. When the condition of the monasteries deteriorated, they were mostly taken over by the Gelukpa order, with the exception of Lamayuru which was placed under the Drigunkpa sect. After worship at Alchi monastery ceased for some reason in the fifteenth century, it also became under the Gelugpa sect controlled from Likir.

Pangong lake

India / Jammu & Kashmir/ Ladakh/ Ladakh

Sight Address : Pangong lake in Ladakh is just 160 km from Leh . Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Pangong Lake is situated at an altitude of about 4,350 m in Pangong region near Leh. With an extension 134 km from India to Tibet, the lake is the main attraction in Pangong region. Pangong lake is a saltwater lake. Its length is about 135km and width is 5km at the broadest point. One third of the lake is in India and the rest is in China. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite of being saline and one can visit during tourist season from May to September.
The lake is five hours drive from Leh, most of it through spectacular valleys. The route from Leh goes south east crossing Shey and Thiksey Gompa. One has to cross Chang-La (the third highest pass in the world) where the army greets visitors by offering hot tea. Chang-La is midway, approximately 80km from Leh. It is named after a holy name called Changla Baba and a temple is constructed in his honour. The road Down from Chang-La is very good and passes though Tangste and other smaller villages.
One catches the first glimpse of the lake from a distance and after crossing the last hurdle – pagal nallah one reaches Pangong Lake. The lake is a vast expanse of blue color. It is surrounded by mountain ranges of relatively low height and area around the lake is completely devoid of any vegetation. Accommodation in this area is mainly in cottages and tents. Spangmik, is the last village on the Indian side and is 7km along the lake’s southern shore. Above Spangmik are the glaciers and snowcapped peaks of the Pangong range. There is a PWD guest house in Spangmik that charges anywhere between 800-1200 Rupees for a day.
Boating is not permitted in Pangong Lake. One could get lucky if the army boats are around and one’s request is entertained.

Pangong Lake, Ladakh.

Pangong Lake, Ladakh.

HistoryEdit

Pangong Lake in Kashmir is the world’s highest brackish lake at 14,256 feet above sea level. A few years back the government decided to open it to tourists though the lake and its surrounding is under army surveillance. The tourism department intends to develop the infrastructure and facilitate the route leading to the lake.
The 160 km trip to Pangong Lake from Leh is one such experience. It begins with Thiksey village famous for its huge monasteries covering an entire mountain ridge. Beyond this remote village there is nothing but the extreme mountain ridge. At Darbuk village near Tangste Valley stood a chain of war memorials with Regimental Insignias in commemoration of the soldiers who lost their lives during the Indo-Chinese war of 1962. Some of the army bunkers and trenches are still in use. Villagers can be seen here along with their large herds of Pashmina sheep and long tailed yaks. The placid Pangong Lake is not just a tourists paradise but a geologist’s domain too and if one is to brush up with political history, the place is a melting pot of confusion and for sure it in no fun for the army in the biting cold to take care of the strategic landscape.

The most famous among all is Leh Dosmochey, which is celebrated for two days in the courtyards of the Leh palace. The monks from different monasteries perform the Chams every year turn by turn. This is the festival of the scapegoat, and is celebrated with fervor at Leh. At Dosmoche, a great wooden mast decorated with streamers and religious emblems is set up outside Leh. At the appointed time, offerings of storma, ritual figures moulded out of dough, are brought out and ceremonially cast away into the desert, or burnt. These scapegoats carry away with them the evil spirits of the previous year, and thus the town is cleansed and absolutely ready to welcome the new year. Spituk, stok, thikse, chemrey and Matho all have their festivals in winter, between November and March. Likir and Deskit (Nubra ) time their festivals to coincide with Dosmoche.

Diksit Monastery

Diskit MonasteryDiskit Monastery, Ladakh

HistoryEdit

Diskit Monastery was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo in the 14th century. The history of the Nubra Valley and the monastery could thus be traced from 14th century onwards. Ladakh was then ruled by King Grags-pa-‘bum-lde (1400–1440) and his brother, who unsuccessfully attempted to usurp Nubra Valley, which was under a local ruler named Nyig-ma-grags-pa. The local ruler assisted a Gelugpa order advocate to build the monastery at Diskit and deify the idol of Tsong Khapa, the founder of the Gelugpa sect, in the monastery. During the rule of King Blogros-chog-idan (1440–1470) who had even controlled western Tibet, Panchen Lha-btsun – a resident of Nubra Valley by birth – studied in Tibet and later became a regent to the founder of Tashilhunpo Monastery and finally during his last stage of life returned to Nubra. His remains have been preserved in Charas. In 1500, Ladakh was ruled by Bkra-shis-rnam-rgyal, who fought the invader Mirza Haider of Central Asia, in Nubra and close to Leh, finally defeated the latter and thus bringing Nubra under Ladakh King’s rule. Even then, the local chieftains still yielded power in Diskit and Hundar. Shia Muslims started settling in Nubra after this war. Bkra-shis-rnam-rgyal’ son, Tshedbang-rnam-rgyal ruled Ladakh from 1530 and expanded his kingdom. At that time, Nubra people prevailed on him and preventing him from invading Hor in Xinjiang, as trade with Yarkand was considered crucial to Nubra. During the reign of Jams-dbang-rnam-rgyal, historical records indicate that a regular tribute payment was made by the Nubra people to the king. The King Bde-‘Idanrnam-rgyal (1620–45) successfully defeated Baltistan and the Mughals. Rgyal kings were very religious and built mani walls throughout their kingdom. Monks were specially engaged to recite hymns of Mani-tung chur in Nubra Valley and in other surrounding areas. In mid eighteenth century, Tshe-dbang-rnam-rgyal gave away the control of Diskit monastery to the Rinpoche of Thikse Monastery and this arrangement has been perpetuated to this day. Since then, Diskit is considered a sub-gompa of Thikse.

Hemis Monastery

India / Jammu & Kashmir/ Ladakh/ Ladakh

Sight Address : Hemis Monastery is located in Hemis, Ladakh, 45 km from Leh, Jammu and Kashmir. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Hemis Monastery is located in Hemis town, 45 km southeast of Leh is the beautiful Hemis Monastery, which was re-established by King Senge Nampar Gyalva in 1672. Built in Tibetan style of architecture, the monastery throws lights to the Buddhist culture and their way of lifestyle. The annual Hemis festival honoring Padmasambhava is held in early June and is a well worth place to visit.

Hemis Monastery, Ladakh

Hemis Monastery, Ladakh

HistoryEdit

Hemis Monastery existed before the 11th century. Naropa, the pupil of the yogi Tilopa, and teacher of the translator Marpa is connected with this monastery. A translation was made by A. Grünwedel of Naropa’s biography that was found in Hemis monastery. In this manuscript Naropa (or Naro) meets the “dark blue” Tilopa (or Tillo), a tantric master, who gives Naropa 12 “great” and 12 “small” tasks to do in order to enlighten him to the inherent emptiness/illusoriness of all things. Naropa is depicted as the “abbott of Nalanda”, the university-monastery in today’s Bihar, India, that flourished until the sacking by Turkish and Afghan Muslim forces. This sacking must have been the driving force behind Naropa’s peregrination in the direction of Hemis. After Naropa and Tilopa met in Hemis they travelled back in the direction of a certain monastery in the now no longer existing kingdom of Maghada, called Otantra which has been identified as today’s Otantapuri. Naropa is consered the founding father of the Kagyu-lineage of the Himalayan esoteric Buddhism. Hence Hemis is the main seat of the Kagyu lineage of Buddhism. In 1894 Russian journalist Nicolas Notovitch claimed Hemis as the origin of an otherwise unknown gospel, the Life of Saint Issa, Best of the Sons of Men, in which Jesus is said to have traveled to India during his “lost years.” According to Notovitch, the work had been preserved in the Hemis library, and was shown to him by the monks there while he was recuperating from a broken leg. But once his story had been re-examined by historians, Notovitch confessed to having fabricated the evidence. Bart D. Ehrman states that “Today there is not a single recognized scholar on the planet who has any doubts about the matter. The entire story was invented by Notovitch, who earned a good deal of money and a substantial amount of notoriety for his hoax”.
