Magnetic Observatory

India /Maharashtra /Raigad /Alibag

Sight Address : Police Line, Alibag, Maharashtra 402201 Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Magnetic Observatory is the only one of its kind in Asia and one of 13 in the whole world, with whom data is exchanged every 12 minutes. The British period building that houses rare valuable instruments like a magnatograph is built only in stone, with no steel used. The observatory records magnetic movement in the earth’s’ crust and also magnetic storms caused by solar storms.

Magnetic Observatory

Magnetic Observatory, Alibaug

HistoryEdit

The Alibag magnetic observatory building was built with Porbandar sandstone, and such care was taken that every individual stone was tested for traces of magnetism. The room housing the instruments was designed to have such a good insulation, that the diurnal variation of temperature would remain within just 1 degree Celsius. After the building was ready and a new set of instruments installed in 1904, parallel observations were made for two years at Colaba and Alibag. This ensured that the Alibag observations would be compatible with those made at Colaba earlier. The Colaba and Alibag measurements together, from 1846 till today, constitute one of the longest series of geomagnetic data in the world. Only after the two-year parallel data for Colaba and Alibag was analysed and compared, and the results found satisfactory, were Bombay trams given permission to run on electric traction from May 1907.

India /Maharashtra /Raigad /Bamangaon

Sight Address : Sagargad is situated near Alibag, on Mumbai-Alibag road & at a distance of 8 km before Alibag. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Sagargad fort can be seen from the Alibaug-Pen road and is identified by Vanartok Pinnacle which stands adjacent to the fort. A prominent pinnacle, Vanartok is a quite a regular climbing spot amongst the Sahyadri climbers. This fort also known as Khed Durg lies in the Alibaug Region. The Sagargad fort can be accessed from Alibaug, a prominent town on the konkan coastline. Sagargad not to be mistaken as a seafort, this hill fort commands a steering view of the entire Alibaug region. Sagargad, which is situated on a hill can be approached by three different routes. Khandale route, Vaghede route & Bail Khind route. The route to Sagargad is a scenic one with lush green vegetation complimented by a relatively thick jungle. The route from Khandale Route has the added attraction of a waterfall. Since this was a monsoon trek, the waterfall was the decisive factor in choosing our route.

Sagargad

Sagargad

HistoryEdit

Sagargad fort was one of those given by Shivaji Maharaj to the Mughals in the Treaty of Purandar. Sagargad was perhaps never a place of consequence except under the Angres. It is mentioned in 1713 as one of sixteen fortified posts that were given to Kanhoji Angre by Pesva Balaji Visvanath, and, in 1740, Sambhaji Angre is said to have taken Sagargad from his half-brother Manajr. Prisoners, sentenced to death, are said to have been hurled down the precipice from Monkey Point.

HistoryEdit

Kanhoji Angre or Conajee Angria or Sarkhel Angre was the first notable chief of the Maratha Navy in 18th century India. He fought successfully all his life against the British, Dutch and Portuguese naval interests in the Indian Ocean during the eighteenth century, and hence was alleged by them to be a pirate. Similar work was carried out against the colonial powers by the Kunjali Marakkars in the sixteenth century. Despite the attempts of the British and Portuguese to subdue Angre, he remained undefeated until his death.
