A natural Jalmagna Shivling or rock Shivling submerged under water is an attractive tourist spot of Gangotri, Uttarakhand that can be easily seen during winters when the water level goes down. According to mythological belief, Lord Shiva sat here while receiving the Ganga in his matted locks.For those not aware of the ancient Indian mythology, Lord Shiva received the Ganges in his matted locks, when Goddess Ganga agreed to flow down to the earth from her heavenly abode, following the penance performed by King Bhagirath. The spot where Lord Shiva gathered Ganga into his locks to reduce the impact of her fall is now the Submerged Shivling. This natural rock Shivling is submerged in the river and is visible during winters when the water level goes down.

Gangotri is the place of the origin of the holy River Ganges, drawing thousands of pilgrims every year. Gangotri is the earthly throne of Goddess Ganga and is one of the four sites of the sacred Char Dham circuit. It is situated at an altitude of 3,753 m (about 12,313 ft). The ‘new-born’ river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga from Devprayag onwards, where it meets the Alaknanda River. Ganga originates at Gaumukh in the Gangotri Glacier which is a 19 km trek from Gangotri. Gangotri gives the excitement of conquering nature combined with a person’s spiritual awakening.

Gangotri is a popular pilgrimage centre, which is located in the district of Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand. This place lies at an altitude of 3750 m above sea level in the Himalayan ranges. This place rests on the banks of River Bhahirathi. Gangotri is a holy site of both Char Dham and Do Dham Pilgrimage. According to mythology, Goddess Ganga in order to vindicate the sins of King Bhagirath and his predecessors transformed into a river known as Ganga. Lord Shiva took Ganga in his matted locks to save the earth from flooding. The source of the river Ganga or Ganges is Gaumukh which is located at a distance of 19 km from Gangotri. A triangular shaped lake, each side about 1 Km long, situated at an altitude of 23211 ft, Satopanth Tal is on the route taken by the Pandava brothers on their Swarga Yatra (descent to heaven). It is named after the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. All around the lake stand mighty Himalayan snow peaks namely Mt. Neelkanth (21638 feet), Mt. Satopanth (23,206 feet), Mt. Swargarohini (20507 feet), Mt. Chaukhamba I (23413 feet) and Mt. Balakun (20040 feet). One also gets some stunning views of the famous Himalayan giant peaks like Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Swargarohini & Narain Parbat enroute Satopanth lake. Taxi : Private taxies and other vehicles are also available between Rishikesh and Badrinath on hire. A Cab will charge about Rs 3,000-4,000 for travel from Dehradun to Badrinath.
BUS : There are many public and private buses from New Delhi, Rishikesh and Haridwar. Special tourist daily buses are also available from these places to Badrinath. It costs about Rs 700-900 per passenger.
Train : The nearest railway station to Badrinath is Rishikesh. Rishikesh railway station is situated 295kms before Badrinath on NH58. Rishikesh is well connected by railway networks with major destinations of India. Trains to Rishikesh are frequent. Badrinath is well connected by motorable roads with Rishikesh. Taxis and buses are available from Rishikesh, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Joshimath and many other destinations to Badrinath.
Air : Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport to Badrinath. It is a domestic airport 326 km away from Badrinath and a Cab will charge about Rs 3,000-4,000 for travel from Dehradun to Badrinath. Nearest International airport is New Delhi (491 km), which is well connected to most of the major foreign cities.
Others : The journey will take around 10-12 horses and ponies leave around every half hour early in the mornings from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m.
