We started early morning as there are 3 timing to cross the forest which are the home of Jarwa Tribes. These tribes live in reserved dense forest areas and occasionally come out on roads. Interaction with the tourists is totally prohibited and filming them in any manner is punishable under the law. We were escorted by Police while crossing the forest. All the vehicles travel together with a speed limit of 40 and regular police patrolling happens to ensure the safety of tourist from the jarwa tribes. The site is reachable by sea within 50 mins. Descent Of The Ganges

India/Tamil Nadu /Kancheepuram /Mahabalipuram

Descent of the Ganges is located on West Raja Street in Mahabalipuram. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Descent of the Ganges is a huge rock monument in the 7th century during the Pallava reign on the face of an enormous boulder, this along with the adjacent carving, Arjuna’s Penance, is one of the largest open-air rock sculptures in the world. The carvings on the rock portray the story of holy river, Ganges, descending from heaven to earth on the request of Sage Bhagiratha. The two different carvings are divided by a natural perpendicular fissure that has been skillfully encompassed into the monument, denoting the flow of Ganges. The presence of a brick masonry cistern at the top of the fissure, proves the fact that a water tank was once placed at the top to give a realistic look of water flowing. About 146 figures are carved on the two boulders including gods, humans and animals that are seen watching the wonder of Ganges River reaching the earth. You can also visit the Ganesh Ratha, situated at a walk able distance. The best time to visit would be during the annual Mahabalipuram Dance Festival. The fast flowing east coast road connects this unique monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the outer world.
