The Wandoor beach is situated at Mahatma Gandhi marine national park. For travelling to Jolly buoy and Red skin islands, people have to reach this place by road and board the ship (port charter boats). Nearly 15 islands are located surrounding this stretch of pristine coastline. The Mahatma Gandhi National Marine part stretches about 282 Sq.Km. Small ships (port charter boats) start from this Wandoor beach towards Jollybuoy and Red Skin islands.People booking their trip in Andaman through travel agents have to be careful when Wandoor beach is included in their plan. Though the beach is nice to visit, one cannot spend much time in this place. It is not good to enjoy the beach play for kids here as there will be lot of fisher men boats parked at the shore. Red Skin island and Jolly Buoy Island lie next to each other and boast of rich under water marine life. Usually, tourists go to Jolly Buoy in the peak season but as rainy season approaches, the weather makes the commute difficult as Jolly Buoy falls in open sea area and then the tourists are taken to Red Skin island. Red Skin Island is another gem in the crown of the Andaman Islands, boasting of beautiful corals, serene beaches and unspoiled beauty. This is also a great place for dolphin sightings. Though much of the island is off limits for tourists, whatever is open to public is lovely nonetheless. Regular tours begin from the Wandoor Village and make stopovers at Jolly Buoy Island and Red Skin Island. The glass bottom boats and snorkelling are part of the package deal. The beauty around the shore line surely looks straight out of some picture postcard. The beaches are considered unsafe for swimming. Also, heavy thrashing and rough activities in these waters may damage the delicate corals, hence, should be avoided.

Kala Pathar beach is a relatively small yet lovely beach. Silvery sand and aqua green waters make the place exotic and exquisite. The beach, honestly is no where close to Radhanagar beach but nevertheless it is a beautiful place to visit. Sadly, there are no eco huts or shade with benches to sit so the best idea is to carry a hammock, tie it around a tree on the beach, lay down in the hammock and enjoy the view or read your favorite author. You can spot dead corals on the beach which is why it is not too suitable for swimming but sitting on one of these corals and watching the sun rise in the morning or just inhaling the fresh breeze blowing over the sea is an experience in itself. The beach lies next to a village called Kala Pathar and hence the name. It lies towards the end of the road that takes you from Dolphin resort to Kala Pathar. Most of the tourists come to Havelock, visit Radhanagar and leave. Thus, Kala Pathar sees very few tourists as compared to Radhanagar.

Ross Island is accessible via boat services that ply between Port Blair and Phoenix Jetty on Ross Island. The island is wholly controlled by the Indian Navy, and all tourists are required to sign in and out. What makes Ross Island the center of attention for historians is that fact that the British Colonial government decided, in 1857, following the first Indian revolt for independence, to setup a hardcopy punishment administration facility to deal with high profile Indian Freedom Fighters. This carried on for close to 80 years! Back then, the island had a hospital, bakery, a market place, tennis courts, living quarters and every other amenity one could think of. All of these today lie in ruins since the island was momentarily at war when the Japanese invaded during World War 2. Ross Island adjoins a twin island called Smith Island also worth visiting.

HistoryEdit

Ross Island served as the capital to the Britishers from 1858 to 1941 when the Japanese occupied it and converted it to a ‘POW site’. The Ross Island is controlled by the Indian navy, which requires every visitor to sign in on entering. It was during the British rule that the island was developed to a perfect township. Many reminiscent of old British regime are still alive in this stunning Island. The island presently houses the ruins of old buildings like Ballroom, Chief Commissioner’s House, Govt. House, Church, Hospital, Bakery, Press, Swimming Pool, Troop Barracks, the Cathedral and graveyard of the Britishers and few other important landmarks which today is hugged by wild wines and huge roots and trunks of century old trees which are very evocative of the ruins and remains. Ever since Dr. James Pattison Walker arrived in Port Blair aboard the East India Company’s steam frigate ‘Senuramis’ on 10 March 1858, this island remained under British occupation till 1942. From 1942 to 1945, the island was under the occupation of Japanese. However, the allies reoccupied the island in 1945 and later abandoned it. During British occupation, this island was the seat of power of the British.

A stretch of 240 kilometers between Port Blair and Maya Bunder is covered by bus transport. In between Port Blair and Maya Bunder two islands lie and the buses and passengers are ferried by boats. The islands that have to be crossed are Baratang and Kadamtala islands. Then a city called Rangat has to be crossed to reach the destiny. From Maya Bunder they have to change the busses to travel upto Kalighat, Diglipur which is the end point of Andaman.

Samudrika Marine Museum in Port Blair, managed by the Indian Navy, is also known as Naval Marine Museum. This museum is a perfect place to know about the various aspects of marine ecology. The museum is divided into five sections focusing on the history of the Andaman Islands, marine life, geography of the region, archaeology, and the customs and culture of the natives. The main attraction of the museum is the large skeleton display of a blue whale. The museum gives information about the various aspects of coral and marine life in lay man’s language. One of the best aquariums is maintained here with an extensive collection of fishes on display. Take a walk inside and enjoy the fascinating and colourful displays of underwater life-shells, corals and more, indigenous to this region.
