Salarjung Museum, Hyderabad inside Viwe

HistoryEdit

Salar Jung Museum is famous for being the third- largest museum in the country, the museum boasts of having the largest antiques collection. Artefacts dating back to the first century can be found here. Established in 1951, the museum was under Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, better known as Salar Jung III. He spent most of his fortune into this museum acquiring priceless artifacts over the years. After his death, in the absence of any heir, the control of his estate along with the museum was taken over by the Indian government and later opened to the public. Personal collections of Salar Jung III, which is famous as the ‘biggest private collection’, are given their rightful place of respect in this museum. The museum was shifted to its current location from Salar Jung’s ancestral home. During the shifting, many of the antiques were stolen. Still whatever remains today is none the less impressive. From Jade daggers belonging to Emperor Jehangir, Noorjahan and Shah Jehan to the wardrobe of Tipu Sultan, you will find a lot of treasures among others on display. If these are not enough, be ready to be mesmerised by the statue of Veiled Rebecca by G.B. Benzoni or listen to the ticking of clocks in unison in the clock room. Another interesting feature is the Quran collection of the museum. In this collection, you will find a Quran made entirely of gold and another one made up of silver. The Indian Parliament has declared the museum an Institution of National Importance.
