Gumbaz is the Mausoleum of Tipu Sultan (Tiger of Mysore), and his father Hyder Ali and mother Fathima Begam. The importance of Gumbaz lies in its well-shaped large dome with ivory inlaid doors and carved stone windows of fine workmanship and inscriptions. This tomb of Tipu Sultan is an imposing structure in the midst of the Lalbagh garden with an open verandah of polished pillars all round. Tipu sultan built this tomb as a tribute to his illustrious father Hyder Ali. This place is near by sangam, and tipu sultan summer palace. Adjacent to the tomb is the nearby mosque, still in operation, “Masjid-E-Aksa.” One can enter the mosque although it is necessary to cover your head.

Gumbaz stands on an elevated platform at the center of the garden. It’s designed in the typical Persian style, with large rectangular garden with the pathways leading the central structure. The architecture is noteworthy. Sharply cut black granite pillars around the open verandah supports the rectangular super structure. The door jambs and the lattice windows on the four sides of the Gumbaz looks as if they are intricately carved in wood, though executed in pitch black granite.

The Dariya Daulat Palace exhibits a large collection of Tipu Sultan’s memorabilia ranging from his weapons (swords, daggers, knives, shields, spears, etc.) to some of his personal belongings like coins, vintage paintings, etc. Structurally, the palace is built in teakwood, in an Indo-Saracenic style. It is built on a raised rectangular platform that has large wooden pillars on all four sides. These are supported by several other wooden pillars, which are adorned with carvings. The outer walls are filled with fresco paintings, which depict the wars fought by Hyder Ali (Tipu Sultan’s father) and Tipu Sultan against the Nizams of Hyderabad and the British and French soldiers. More paintings follow on pillars, on arches and along the corridor walls. Inside, the Dariya Daulat Palace has four intricately carved wooden staircases that lead towards large halls. These halls carry high ceilings with carvings and floral patterns.

The Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery in Mysore is considered one of the best art galleries in South India because of its excellent collection of paintings and artifacts that once belonged to the Wodeyars of Mysore. The three-storied Jaganmohan Palace was converted into this art gallery in 1875. The Jayachamarajendra art gallery has a remarkable collection of Rembrandt paintings. This collection is so unique that such works of Rembrandt can be found nowhere in the world except in Russia. The western collection section of the museum has works by master like P.P. Ruben, Titan, A. Caddy and miniature paintings by Gunoy. The gallery also has the rare and valuable art collection made by Col. Scott, a British Army Officer, who served in the British Army that fought against Tippu Sultan. But this collection was shifted to Srirangapatna in 1950. The gallery also boasts of a collection of Gravure prints by Britsih Army officers showing details of the Mysore wars against HyderAli and Tipu Sultan. One hall has exclusively been used to display the exquisite works of the famous Kerala prince -painter, Raja Ravi Varma. His paintings depict various incidents from the epics and these paintings attract a huge number of visitors to the Art Gallery.

Shravanabelagola is an important Jain pilgrimage center situated on top of the Indragiri hills. The hill has 14 basadis or temples and many Jain monasteries. The most famous basadi is the Chavundaraya basadi that was built in 982 AD. The beautifully carved pillar called the Tyagada Brahma Pillar is also found here. The floral designs on this pillar are exceptional. The most important tourist attraction here is the enormous statue of Bahubali or Gommateshwara. He was a King who renounced his kingdom and spent the rest of his life meditating till he attained Nirvana. The naked statue of Gommateshwara is 58 feet high and 26 feet wide and has 10 feet long feet. The statue was carved out of the black granite of the hill and is a picture of serenity and composure. Thousands of devotees gather here once in 12 years to perform the Mahamastakabhisheka or sacred anointment, which is a grand and extravagant ceremony. Hundreds of pots of curd, milk, honey vermilion, coconut water, turmeric paste and even gold and precious jewels are poured over the statue’s head by the priests.

The Somnathpur Temples stands on a raised platform like other Hoysala temples. Somnatha, a general of King Narasimha III. It has three wonderfully carved peaks with a common Mandapam. The three sanctums once housed beautifully carved idols of Kesava, Janardhana and Venugopala. Today, the idol of Lord Kesava is missing but the other two are still worshipped by the visitors. Somnathpur temple is designed as a mini cosmos with scenes carved on the walls including Gods, Goddesses, dancing girls, musicians, gurus and animals like elephants, lions, cows and monkeys. The most characteristic feature of this temple is its 16 different ceilings, each depicting a different stage of a blooming plantain (banana flower). Small and large pieces of finely carved stone chips are set in complicated patterns.

Lingabudi Lake, also known as Lingambudi Lake, is a beautiful water body situated in Srirampura. Not many are aware of the fact that this water body is among the largest and oldest lakes in Mysore. Making this place even more attractive is the lush greenery surrounding it. A vast variety of avifauna can be spotted near the lake, such as White Ibis, Kingfisher, River Tern, Little Cormorant, Spoonbill, Open Bill Stork and many more. Every year, more than 250 species of migratory birds visit this lake. Adding to the rich biodiversity of this place is an array of flowering plants like marigold, rose and hibiscus, to name a few. This lake spans over an area of about 3 acres and has fencing along the periphery. There is a walkway adjoining the lake, which provides an opportunity to enjoy nature walk. Stone benches have also been set up so that visitors can sit and admire the picturesque view of this beautiful lake.
