Agam Kuan meaning the “unfathomable well” has immense historical substance. It is associated with the rule of Mauryan Emperor King Ashoka and is one the oldest archaeological sites in Patna. Many legends are attached to the site and while some regard it as a torture chamber, some refer to it as the well where King Ashoka threw his brothers in order to attain the throne. Near this site is the Temple of Shitala Devi, which is known for remedial cures for small pox and chicken pox.

Agam Kuan is approximately 105 ft deep and with a perimeter extending over 20 ft. It’s upper half is encased with a 44 ft brick layer and secures it with wooden rings. The structure of the surface is constructed with eight arched windows. According to legends, Emperor Ashoka had this well built for the purpose of torturing people. Popular folklore also states that this was the well, where King Ashoka drowned his 99 brothers in order to get the throne of the Mauryan Empire.

Nimishamba temple was built at the time of Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar about 300 to 400 years ago on the bank of the river Cauvery. Sri Nimishamba is considered as the incarnation of Goddess Parvathi, the wife of Lord Shiva. The temple has the Shrichakra carved on a stone in front of Sri Nimishamba and pooja is performed. There is a belief that Sri Nimishamba is going to remove all the problems and troubles of her devotees within a minute. That is why she is called Nimishamba. Nimisha means a minute.

Tipu Sultan built this masjid in 1787 after he ascended the throne of Mysore. It is said that he performed the first imamath himself. The Jama Masjid is a grand structure with two lofty minarets, there is about 200 steps leading to the top of the minarets from where one can have a view of picturesque surrounding area. There are five Persian inscriptions, one of this inscription mentions all the ninety-nine names of Allah.

This dungeon lies North of Ranganatha Swamy temple. The Vaulted dungeon measuring 30.5 meters width 12.2 meters height and is built of brick and mortar. The prisoners were chained to the stone slabs fixed on the East, North and West walls. These dungeons are below ground level and are currently reached through the stairs seen on the foreground. The arches on the roof are partly visible while there is a hole visible on the roof. Dungeon is named after Colonel Bailey who died here in 1780 AD this dungeon was used to imprison Captain Baird, Colonel Brithwite, Captain Rulay, Frazer, Samson and Lindsay by Tipu Sultan. During the siege of Srirangapatna, one of the cannons rolled back, pierced the ceiling and fell into the dungeon. One can see them still lying there.

HistoryEdit

Colonel Bailey was kept Prisoner of War by Tipu Sultan. He had been captured in the second Anglo-Mysore War, also called the Battle of Pollilur that was fought in September 1780 AD. Colonel Bailey died in 1782 AD. The prisoners were chained to the walls of the dungeon. A cannon found inside the dungeon is believed to have fallen through the hole on the roof.
