Five Faced Hanuman Temple

India /Tamil Nadu /Ramanathapuram /Rameshwaram

The Five-Faced Hanuman Temple is located at a distance of 2 km from the main city temple. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The Five-Faced Hanuman Temple is highly famous in Rameshwaram, as this is the place, where Lord Hanuman revealed his five faces. These five faces were that of Lord Hanuman, Lord Adivaraha, Lord Narashima, Lord Hayagriva and Lord Garuda. It is believed that after revealing His secret, Hanuman was decorated with senthooram by the saints. The temple has a statue of Hanuman with senthooram. In 1964, the idols of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita were brought from Dhanushkodi and placed in this temple. It is believed that the floating stone used for constructing the stone bridge across the sea, lies outside this temple. This floating stone was used for building Sethu Bandanam, the bridge connecting India and Sri Lanka. These stones are oval in shape and are covered with tiny craters, such as coral which stays afloat in water. In this temple, tourists can also watch the movie based on the story of how Hanuman helped Lord Rama to find his wife Sita. This movie also shows Hanuman flying in air to Lanka to find Goddess Sita.

Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaram, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple located on the island town of Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, is one of the four sacred Char Dhams in the country, the other three being Jagannath Temple in Puri (Orissa), Dwarkadheesh Temple in Dwarka (Gujarat) and the Badrinath temple in Badrinath (Uttarakhand). The temple gets its name from Lord Rama because he came here to worship Lord Shiva. The Primary deity is Lord Ramanathswamy (Shiva) in the form of a lingam. There is a second Shivalingam in the temple, called Vishwalingam, that was brought by Hanuman. As per Lord Rama’s instructions, the Vishwalingam is worshipped first. The shrines of Ramanathswamy and Goddess Vishalakshi are separated by a corridor. There are separate shrines for numerous gods and goddesses.

HistoryEdit

After killing Ravana (a brahmin), Lord Rama arrived at Rameshwaram from Lanka with his wife Sita. To expiate the ‘kukarma’ or ‘dosha’ of killing a brahmin, he wanted to worship Lord Shiva. Since there was no Shivling in Rameshwaram, he sent Hanuman to get the biggest Shivling from the Himalayas. Since it took him a long time to return, Sita made a shivling with mud and sand that became the original Rameshwaram shivalingam.

HistoryEdit

The temple and the island of Rameswaram have acquired this name because, Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva, the God of Gods here on return from Sri Lanka. According to legend, after killing Ravana Lord Rama returned with his consort Goddess Seeta to India first stepping on the shores of Rameswaram. To expiate the “dosha” of killing a brahmin, Lord Rama wanted to offer worship to Lord Shiva. Since there was no shrine in the island had despatched Sri Hauman to Kailash to bring an idol of Lord Shiva.
Between 1897 and 1904, the ALAR family of Devakottai completed the imposing eastern tower of nine tiers 126 feet in height from Thiruppani funds. Between 1907 and 1925 they renovated the Sanctum Sanctorum and the prakaram (inner most corridor) by replacing the lime stones by black granite with adequate provision for light and ventilation and also arranged for the performance of Ashtabandana Kumbabishekam in 1925; then on 22-2-1947 and the third Ashtabandana Maha Kumbabishegam was performed on 5-2-1975.

Siddhivinayak at Siddhatek

Siddhivinayak at Siddhatek

HistoryEdit

Legend says that Lord Brahma, with the blessings of Lord Ganesh, was busy in creating the world. While this was going on, Lord Vishnu felt asleep and the two demons, Madhu and Kaitabh, emerged from Vishnu’s ears. They started troubling all gods, goddesses and sages. On realizing that only Lord Vishnu could kill the demons, Brahma and other gods requested him to kill them. Though Lord Vishnu fought for about 5000 years, he failed in defeating the demons. On the advice of Lord Shiva, Vishnu worshipped Lord Ganesh. Vishnu was then successful in killing the demons with the blessings of Lord Ganesha. Hence, the place where Vishnu performed penance and gained Siddhi, is known as Siddhatek and Lord Ganesh, who conferred Siddhis, is known as Siddhivinayaka.
