Dhanushkodi Road, 3.5 km from main island, Rameswaram, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Jada Theertham attracts countless devotees every year. It is basically a water tank that is surrounded by trees from all sides. This site finds special mention in the Hindu Epic – Ramayana. It is believed that after killing the demon king Ravana, Lord Rama came to this place and installed a Shiva Linga. Before doing so, he washed His hair (jada) to purify Himself. Pilgrims in seemingly endless numbers come here to take a dip in the holy water of the tank.

Jada Tirtham

HistoryEdit

The theertham is again related to legends of Sri Rama, and it is believed that Lord Rama stopped at the place on his way to Ayodhya after killing Ravana and rescuing his wife Sita. He prepared a lingam and worshipped it. The lingam is called the Sri Ramalinga. Rama also washed his ‘jada’ or hair in the water in order to absolve Himself from the sin of having killed a Brahmin. Only after ‘washing off’ his sins did He start worshipping the lingam.

Adam’s Bridge

India /Tamil Nadu /Ramanathapuram /Rameshwaram

Adam’s Bridge is located around 25 km southwest of Rameshwaram is the easternmost point of Pamban Island. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Adam’s Bridge is also known as the Rama’s Bridge or Rama Setu. Adam’s Bridge is essentially a chain of coral reefs and sandbanks that almost connects India with its neighbouring country, Sri Lanka. It is popularly believed that this bridge was constructed by Lord Rama, with the help of Hanuman and his Sena, for rescuing his wife Sita from Ravana. This bridge got its name from an Islamic legend, who said that Adam used this bridge to reach ‘Adam’s Peak’ in Sri Lanka. This bridge is a natural bridge that is made of rocks, small islands, sandbanks and stretches of reefs. Sandbanks of this bridge are quite dry and the sea is shallow. Mostly 3 feet in depth, the sea is 30 feet deep at certain places. The entire bridge is around 48 km (30 miles) long and separates the Gulf of Mannar from the Palk Strait. It starts from the Dhanushkodi tip in India’s Pamban Island and ends at Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. The Pamban Island is semi-connected to the India by a 2 km long Pamban Bridge, while Mannar Island is connected to Sri Lanka through a causeway.

Kothandaramaswamy temple

India /Tamil Nadu /Ramanathapuram /Rameshwaram

Kothandaramaswamy Temple is situated at a distance of 12 km from the main city. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The walls of the Kothandaramaswamy temple have beautiful paintings inscribed on them, depicting the story of Ramayana. Kothandaramaswamy Temple has several images of Lord Rama, wife Sita, brother Lakshmana, Hanuman and Vibishana. Athi Maram is one of the oldest trees located in the temple and there is a temple tank named after sage Bhringhi. The temple Gopuram looks odd to many Shaivites as its structure is similar in shape to that of the Dakshinamoorthi Temple, a Vaishnavite temple tower. The place nearby this temple is called as Nandavanam or Nandambakkam, where Lord Rama lived for few days at sage Bhringhi’s ashram. This temple is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal Ocean and lies at the southernmost tip of India. Tourists can take taxi from the city centre to reach the Kothandaramaswamy Temple. It is preferable to visit the temple in the early morning, as over this, is the time when the temple gets crowded. Moreover, tourists can stay in the rooms available within the temple for pilgrims.

HistoryEdit

Kothandaramaswamy temple complex was damaged during the cyclone of 1964, but the temple structure remained intact. It is believed that Ravana’s brother Vibishana joined Lord Rama’s army at this place.
