Chandragiri Fort

India /Andhra Pradesh /Chittoor /Chandragiri

Chandragiri Fort, which lies about 14 km south of the temple town of Tirupati. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Chandragiri fort entrance is way led by a temple that’s dedicated to lord Hanuman as a symbol of a protector of the fort. The entrance until the Mahals are with bastions in between, built with undressed granite stones and mortar binding them. Entrance ways of the Bastions are done with great stone carved pillars depicting Lions and humans. A still way ahead will reveal a sloppy stone mountain on top of it three stone pillars erected in a way for executions which were carried out in the open those days. Also on the way are small temples. The Raja Mahal is a good example of Indo-Saracenic Architecture, the structure is two storied with the balconies running into a series of arches with the ceilings done with plaster of paris. The roof lining is carefully done with stucco work depicting rich art, like different postures of dancing women. There is no timber used in the structure, the Mahal is entirely built with stones and mortar. The Rani Mahal is near to the Raja Mahal, however there is no residing proof if it were used exclusively for Rani’s, the first floor is something more looks like a stable. However an inscription at the basement tells that it could be the quarters of the residing commander.

Silathoranam or Rock Garden

India /Andhra Pradesh /Chittoor /Tirupati

Silathoranam is located about 1 km north of the Sri Venkateswara Temple, near the Chakra Teertham at Tirumala. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Silathoranam or Rock Garden, Sila Thoranam, a naturally formed arch of rock is a distinctive geological wonder. The Arch is also called Silathoranam in local language (Telugu language: “Sila” means ‘rock’ and “thoranam” means a garland strung over a threshold, connecting two vertical columns or an ‘arch’ as in this case). Since the rock look likes and appears to be the hood of a serpent, a conch and a discus, it is conceived that this source is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara idol. The arch measures 8 m (26.2 ft) in width and 3 m (9.8 ft) in height, and the Geologists have identified the rocks on the hill as pre-Cambrian, and this arch formation suggests an antiquity of several million years to the Tirumala hill.
Reputed as the only one of its kind in Asia, it is believed to be several million years old. It is said that there are only two other sites like this in the entire world itself. The other two are the one that cuts through the headland of the Dalradian Quartzite in Ukand and the Rainbow Arch Bridge of Utah in USA .

Silathoranam or Rock Garden

Silathoranam or Rock Garden

HistoryEdit

In the 1980s, during excavations for a geological fault in the Tirumala hills, geologists found this rare geological formation of the rock arch which has two dissimilar sets of rocks with a connecting thin link. The assessed geological age of the rock arch is 1.5 billion years. Formation of the arch is attributed to intensified weathering and erosion of stream action that has withstood the torque of nature. This is a rare geological fault which is technically called in the geological idiom as ‘eparchian unconformity’.

Detail InformationEdit

Sanaka Sanandana Theertham is a famous waterfall in Tirupati, which is associated with two sages named Sanaka and Sanandana. It is believed that once these two sages went to Vaikuntham for seeing Lord Vishnu, but were not permitted by the guards called Jaya and Vijaya. These two sages then cursed the guards that they will take birth as Danavas or demons. After three rebirths, these two guards regained their original form and went back to Vaikuntham.
