Chandragiri Fort, Kasargod

Chandragiri Fort, Kasargod

HistoryEdit

Chandragiri fort has an eventful history to relate. A couple of centuries ago, the river Chandragiri was considered the border of two powerful kingdoms – Kolathunadu and Thulunadu. When Thulunadu was captured by the Vijayanagara Emperor, the Kolathunadu kings lost the Chandragiri region to them. It was only in the 16th century that the great empire of Vijayanagara (presently under the Karnataka State) declined. But later the Ikkeri Naikkars or the Bedanoor Naiks took over the reins of Chandragiri as an independent region. Thus the Chandragiri Fort was built by Sivappa Naik for the defence of his kingdom. The fort changed hands over the years to Hyder Ali of Mysore and then to the British East India Company. Today it is a protected monument under the State Archaeology Department. The Chandragiri region was rejoined to the State of Kerala through the State Reorganisation Act, 1956, Government of India.

Madhur Temple, Kasaragod

HistoryEdit

Madhur temple was initially Madhanentheswara Temple (Lord Shiva) and it is believed that, a “low caste” female by name “Madura” found an “Udbhava Murthy” (a statue that is not prepared by a human being) of Shiva Linga. The main attraction of Madhur Temple is statue of Lord Ganapathi on the wall of the sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagriha). The statue of Ganapathi was drawn by a brahmin boy and he was son of a priest. He drew a small Ganapathy but the image became big and fat. Therefore the boy called the Ganapathi as Bodda Ganesha or Boddajja. As per the legend of Kumble, Tipu Sultan of Mysore attacked the Madhur temple and desired to demolish the temple during his invasion of Kodagu, Tulunadu as well as Malabar. A miracle happened after drinking water from the well of this temple, he changed his mind on attacking and demolishing the Garbhagriha of Madhur Temple. He left the place and moved in the direction of Malabar. However to please his soldiers as well as Islamic scholars he made a cut using his sword as an evidence of his attack. The cut mark even now remains and it is noticeable on the building that has been constructed across the well of the Madhur Temple.

HistoryEdit

Bekal fort, which is of great historical and archaeological interest, is the largest and best preserved of its kind in the district and the land on which it is situated, runs into the sea with fine bay towards the south. According to the South Canara Mannual, Bekaln fort fell into the hands of Haider Ali in 1763. It housed the Huzur of Canara during Tipu’s time and the remains of a gallow reminiscent of the days of Mysorean occupation were seen here till a few years back. After the overthrow of Tipu Sultan in 1799, Bekal was incorporated into the dominions of the English East India Company. The erstwhile Kasaragod taluk of South Canara district was known as Bekal for more than half a century. When Tipu Sultan led the great military expedition to capture Malabar Bekal Fort served as an important military station for his army. The coins and other artifacts unearthed by the archaeological excavation conducted recently at Bekal fort shows the strong presence of the Mysore Sulthans. The Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799 led to the death of Tipu Sulthan and consequently the fort came under the British East India Company.
