Alappuzha Lighthouse

India / Kerala/ Alappuzha/ Alappuzha

Sight Address : Alappuzha Lighthouse is located 4km from Alappuzha town, near the Alappuzha Beach. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Alappuzha Lighthouse is a magnificent structure which stood before us with hight of an average 10 story building and the 19th century construction stood there welcoming the visitors from 21st century . It become quite apparent that it is going to be little tough job for us to climb the steep wooden staircase all the way to to that ten story structure . But our enthusiasm droved us all the way up and we are there to enjoy the magnificent view of the Alleppey beach and the heritage buildings up from the light house. It is quite obvious that the structure could not tolerate a huge in rush of tourists and the wooden staircases are so narrow that it will permit only one person to climb in one direction at a time .

HistoryEdit

Alappuzha Lighthouse is 150-year-old lighthouse situated in Alleppey also known as Alappuzha locally. Located near the sea bridge and the Raja Kesavadas swimming pool, it was built in the year 1862 and was one of the busiest ports and trade centre of Kerala during the time. Alappuzha as a part of Travancore came under the rule of the former kings of Travancore. Once the Portuguese, Dutch and English traders arrived in India, Vizhinjam, Kollam, Travancore and Purakkad became the main ports of Travancore through which foreign trade increased. After the Port of Purakkad became unfit for trade, there was a need for another port for which Alappuzha was chosen and an infrastructure was developed.
The port was opened to foreign traders in 1792. There were no lighthouses at that time, only a light at the head of the pier that was provided for the mariners but with the increase in port activities, the authorities decided to provide for a lighthouse. The construction of the Alappuzha lighthouse began under the rule of Travancore King, Marthanda Varma-II and was completed during the rule of Rama Varma of Travancore. The Alappuzha lighthouse is still a manually operated station. A white light flashes twice every 15 seconds from the lighthouse. The lighthouse was opened for public in 2007.

St. Andrew’s Forane Church of Arthunkal

HistoryEdit

St. Andrew’s Forane Church, Arthunkal, Alappuzha district, Kerala, India, was originally built by the Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century. It has a fascinating history. The church was rebuilt in 1584, under the then vicar Fr. Jacoma Fenicio, whom the devotees claim, possessed magical powers to heal the body and mind. Devotees fondly referred to him as “Arthunkal Veluthachan”, which in English translates to “fair skinned father”. Fr. Fenicio died in 1632. Eight years after his death, the church was rebuilt again, this time facing the west towards the long white-sand beach on the shores of the Arabian Sea. In 1647, a statue of St. Sebastian, struck with arrows all over his bleeding body (he was executed on the order of the Roman emperor for embracing the Christian faith) sculptured in Milan, was brought and placed in the Arthunkal church.

Sight Address : Alappuzha Beach is situated at 1 km from alappuzha railway sation Alleppey District , Alappuzha 688007, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Alappuzha beach is a popular picnic spot. The pier, which extends into the sea here, is over 137 years old. Entertainment facilities at the Vijaya Beach Park add to the attraction of the beach. There is also an old lighthouse nearby which is greatly fascinating to visitors. Another delightful experience while in Alappuzha is a houseboat cruise. The ones you find in the backwaters of Alappuzha are in fact reworked version of Kettuvallams of olden times. The original Kettuvallams or rice barges used to carry tons of rice and spices. The Kettuvallam or ‘boat with knots’ was so called because the entire boat was held together with coir knots only.

Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple

India / Kerala/ Alappuzha/ Alappuzha

Sight Address : Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple is situated 14 km south of Alappuzha in Kerala, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple is a typical Kerala style built temple, dedicated to Sree Krishna. Ambalapuzha temple is famous for its temple architecture and the milk porridge- Paalpaayasam. Chembakasseri Pooradam built this temple in 800 AD. One of the legends connected with the origin of this temple is related to the sage Vilwamangalam Swaamiyaar. Devanarayana Raja surrendered his kingdom to Sreekrishnan after the consecration of Ambalapuzha temple and assumed the name Devanarayanan. The idol at Ambalapuzha is likened to Parthasaarathhi with a whip in the right hand and a Shankhu (sacred conch) in the left. It is also in this temple that ‘Pallipana’ dance is performed by ‘Velans’ (sorcerers) once in twelve years. Human sacrifice was conducted in ancient times.
The idol at Ambalapuzha is likened to Parthasarthi with a whip in the right hand and a Shankhu (sacred conch) in the left – an aspect of Lord Krishna taken during the Mahabharata war. Lord Krishna is popularly known here as Unnikannan (child Krishna). The idol of Krishna here is carved out of black granite stone holding a whip in His right hand and a conch in the left. This temple is directly associated to the Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple. During the raids of Tipu Sultan in 1789, the idol of Sri Krishna from the Guruvayoor Temple was brought to the Ambalappuzha Temple for safe keeping. The payasam served in the Ambalappuzha Temple is famous among Hindu devotees. This sweet pudding made of rice and milk has an interesting mythological legend behind it.It is believed that Guruvayoorappan reaches here daily at the time of Palpayasa Nedyam to have it.

HistoryEdit

Ambalapuzha Temple was built by the erstwhile ruler of Chembakasserry Sree Pooradam Thirunal Devanarayanan Thampuran during 15th-17th AD. It is believed that the idol of Sree Krishna of Guruvayoor Temple was brought here for safekeeping during the raids of Tipu Sultan in 1789. The temple is also famous for its unique prasadam, the delicious Ambalapuzha Palpayasam a sweet porridge made of rice, milk, and sugar. Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple is often refereed as Dwaraka of South. It is believed that one day Pooradam Thirunal Thampuran and Saint Vilwamangalam Swamiyar was traveling along the backwaters and heard melodious sound from a flute. Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, an ardent devotee of Krishna, had a vision of Lord Krishna playing flute on a Peepul tree. Feeling the presence of God, Thampuran decided to build a temple at this place.

HistoryEdit

Sree Nagaraja Temple is a pilgrim centre, dedicated to the Serpent God – Nagaraja. The presiding deity at Mannarasala is Nagaraja. He is Anantha (Vishnu) and Sarparaja is Vasuki (Siva). It is believed that Nagaraja, as the installed deity, is endowed with the form of Vishnu and the spirit of Siva. (From the phenomena observed at the time of the installation the power of Vasuki was manifested and that of Anantha interiorized. Taking into account the power of Vasuki which was manifest; the Saivite form of worship was followed. (This may be reason for the magnificent procession taken out here on Mahasivaratri day). Anantha represents the ‘Vaishnava Sankalpa‘ and Siva represents the ‘Siavaite Sankalpa’.
