Sajja Kothi

India /Maharashtra /Kolhapur /Kolhapur

Sight Address : Sajja Kothi is located at Panhala, Maharashtra. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

If you are interested in a bit of intrigue, visit the Sajja Kothi and listen to the story of how the Brave Warrior King Chhatrapati Shivaji made his escape from the Jaws of Death! Situated amidst lush greenery, the majestic Sajja Kothi offers a gorgeous view of the Waranna valley below. Sajja Kothi is a three-storied building built by the Mohammedans in 1008 AD. The building, which was actually a punishment cell, is a classic example of Mughal architecture. The chambers of the building are mute testimony to many a tragic tale. When you visit the fort, you will hear a very interesting anecdote associated with the monument. It is said that when Siddi Johar, a formidable Bijapur General attacked Panhala, Shivaji tricked the general by escaping from the window of Sajja Kothi while a brave soldier Shiva Kashid disguised himself as Shivaji and combated the fury of the general. It is the same place where Sambhaji was imprisoned by treacherous means. He plunged down into the deep valley and made his escape.

Panhala Fort

India /Maharashtra /Kolhapur /Kolhapur

Sight Address : Panhala Fort is is located in Panhala, 20 kilometres northwest of Kolhapur, Radhanagari Road,, Kolhapur, Maharashtra  416012.Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Panhala fort (also known as Panhalgad, Pahalla and Panalla (literally “the home of serpents”), is located in Panhala, 20 kilometres northwest of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India. It is strategically located looking over a pass in the Sahyadri mountain range which was a major trade route from Bijapur in the interior of Maharashtra to the coastal areas. Due to its strategic location, it was the centre of several skirmishes in the Deccan involving the Marathas, the Mughals and the British East India Company, the most notable being the Battle of Pavan Khind. Here, the queen regent of Kolhapur, Tarabai, spent her formative years. Several parts of the fort and the structures within are still intact.

 Panhala Fort

Panhala Fort

HistoryEdit

Panhala fort was built between 1178 and 1209 CE, one of 15 forts (others including Bavda, Bhudargad, Satara, and Vishalgad) built by the Shilahara ruler Bhoja II. A copper plate found in Satara shows that Raja Bhoja held court at Panhala from 1191–1192 CE. About 1209–10, Bhoja Raja was defeated by Singhana (1209–1247), the most powerful of the Devgiri Yadavas, and the fort subsequently passed into the hands of the Yadavas. Apparently it was not well looked after and it passed through several local chiefs. In 1376 inscriptions record the settlement of Nabhapur to the south-east of the fort. It was an outpost of the Bahamanis of Bidar. Mahmud Gawan, an influential prime minister, encamped here during the rainy season of 1469. On the establishment of the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur in 1489, Panhala came under Bijapur and was fortified extensively. They built the strong ramparts and gateways of the fort which, according to tradition, took a hundred years to build. Numerous inscriptions in the fort refer to the reign of Ibrahim Adil Shah, probably Ibrahim I (1534–1557).

There are many ancient, rich temples, holy places and gardens. There is evidence to show that the Konkan king Kamadeo, Chalukya, Shilahar, Yadav dynasties visited this city. Adya Shankaracharya also visited. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj & Sambhaji reigned. The idol of Mahalaxmi is made of jewel – stone, approximately weighing 40 kg. The size is like Salunki. Sand & diamond are found in it. It stands on a stony stage with a lion behind it. In the middle there is natural lotus. It is four-handed, having Vetak, shield, Mhalung & Water-Pot. There is crown on the head and a snake holds shade. In 109 A. D. Karnadeo cut off the jungle and brought the temple to light. The existence goes back to 8 th century, according to Dr. Bhandarkar & Mr. Khare. In the 8 th century, the temple sank down due to earthquake. In the 9 th century Gandavadix (King) extended the temple by building Mahakali Mandir. During 1178 -1209, in the reigo of Raja Jaysing & Sindhava, South gate & Atibaleshwar Temple were built. In 1218 Yadav king Tolum built Mahadwar, and offered jewels to Devi. Further, Shilahar built Maha Sarasvati Mandir. He being a gain, got 64 idols carved. It is possible that new idol called Padmavati was installed at that time. Further, in Chalukya times, Ganapati before the temple was installed. It seems that the original temple was of the Hindus. In the 13 th century, Shankaracharya built Nagar Khana & Office, Deepmalas.
