Popular as Joshirao Ganapati Temple among locals, it is thronged by numerous archaeological students for studying its structure.

Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary

HistoryEdit

The nearby Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary has religious, cultural and archaeological significance. The name is derived from a famous ancientShiva temple and has been a place of pilgrimage for many centuries. The temple inside the sanctuary is actually one large temple and a complex of 51 small temples, all from the Satavahana dynasty, between 230 BCEuntil around 220 CE. There is another temple called Kamal Bhairao or Kal Bhairao, located on the edge of a steep cliff. The entrance to that temple is through a narrow tunnel and the temple itself is partially hewn out of hard basalt rock. Both these temples deserve additional archaeological survey. Previously the forests of Radhanagari were specially used as the game reserve of the king of Kolhapur Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj (1874–1922) .In 1958 an area of 19.61 km2 (7.57 sq mi) was declared as Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary. In 1985 the Government of Maharashtra expanded the sanctuary by declaring additional areas of forest including the catchment basins of the two major reservoirs: Kalammawadi Reservoir (also called Rajarshi Shahu Sagar Reservoir) and Radhanagari Dam & Reservoir (also called Laxmi Sagar Reservoir) as Radhanagari wildlife sanctuary.

Gagangiri Maharaj Math Temple

HistoryEdit

Gagangiri Maharaj Math is located in the centre of a dense forest in Dijapur close to Kolhapur. Shri Gagangiri Maharaj was a Hindu sage who used to follow Nath Sampradaya. According to history, Gagangiri Maharaj served penance from 1932 to 1940. During these years, the sage meditated in the dense jungle in Gagangiri Maharaj Math. The math has facilities for yoga, meditation, Hindu teachings and many more.Sri Gagangiri Maharaj as a youthful sanyasi, also moved about with Mahants (Senior Sages) right up to the Himalayas. During pilgrimages he learnt yoga and several occult and religious practices. He travelled far and wide to places such as Nepal, Bhutan, Manas Sarovar, Gaurishankar, (Gorak assembly), Gorakshdarbar, Gorakhpur, Pashupatinath and returned to Almora. Finally, he travelled through the valley of Ganga, Himachal Pradesh and reached.
Near Badrika Ashram there ice-clad mountains, where Gagangiri Maharaj was extremely tired as a result of his peregrinations and he decided to settle in a cave. When he was relaxing, a sage wearing saffron robes came there from the mountains. He sprinkled water from his Kamandalu, on the face of Gagangiri Maharaj. He also gave him some kind of green grass to eat which resembled coriander leaves. For his penance, he had prepared mattresses of grass. He found his mattresses growing like living vegetation. This was considered as an experience, where Tantrik technique is perfected. He did a number of Kaya Kalpas (Rejuvenation). In this process he invented several new concepts in Tantrik techniques and proved them true.
