Pataleshwar Cave Temple

India /Maharashtra /Pune /Pune

Sight Address : Pataleshwar Cave Temple is located at Jangli Maharaj Road, Shivali Nagar, Pune, Maharashtra, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Pataleshwar Cave Temple (also called Panchaleshvara or Bamburde) is a rock-cut cave temple, carved out in the 8th century in the Rashtrakuta period. It is located in what is now Pune, in the state of Maharashtra, India. It was originally situated outside the town, but the city limits have expanded so that it is now located on the downtown Jangli Maharaj Road. It has been declared as a protected monument by the government.
The temple, made of basalt rock, is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. The sanctum – a cube-shaped room about 3-4 metres on each side – houses a linga – the symbol of Shiva and there are two smaller cells on each side. In front of the cave is a circular Nandi mandapa, its umbrella shaped canopy supported by massive square pillars. This mandapa is one of the peculiar structures of Pataleshwar. The temple was left incomplete, possibly because of a fault line found at the back of the sanctum sanctorum, which made the further sculpting unsafe, or political upheaval resulting in loss of patronage. Still in use, the linga is anointed with ghee and yogurt. A brass temple bell hangs outside the basalt entryway.

This is an artificial lake that has acquired the utmost tourist importance over the years for many a reason. The place has been blessed with consummate natural beauty. The picturesque locations all around make the place ideal for photography and landscape painting. Most importantly, Pashan Lake is famous as a kind of a sanctuary for hundreds of species of local and migratory birds. All in all, you thoroughly enjoy the trip to Pashan Lake and wish to come here over and over again. As mentioned above, the Pashan Lake is a paragon for bird watchers. Especially the students of Ornithology frequent the place quite often. You as a visitor to Pashan Lake will be delighted to see rare and beautiful birds like gray heron, white and red lapwing, purple moorhen and little egret. Watching the birds like house crow, Coot, jungle babbler, white breasted Kingfisher, cattle egret, red-rumped swallow, pied kingfisher, open billed stork, pied male bushchat and many more is a treat. Taking into consideration the importance of Pashan Lake as a favorite place for many migratory birds, the district administration has decided to develop the entire area as a bird sanctuary. Cool breezes blowing here and the fresh air are yet another temptation for the tired city souls and weary minds.
Boating is fun here:
In addition to bird watching, boating here in the Pashan Lake and fun are synonymous. Those who are interested in fishing have to seek prior permission from the lake authorities. Some lifeguards too have been appointed by the lake authorities in order to avoid any untoward incident while boating or fishing.
Bonelli’s Eagle:
One more interesting fact should be noted here. Birdwatchers and the students of Ornithology will certainly find it important! Not very far from the Pashan Lake, a Bonelli’s Eagle has built its nest in the thick forest. The authorities of WWF have been looking after the eagle for the last 13 years. The nest has become an added attraction for the tourists.

Pashan Lake, Pune

Pashan Lake, Pune

HistoryEdit

Pashan lake is a man-made lake, built to accommodate the water requirements of the Pashan and Sutarwadi suburbs. The lake was once a source of drinking water, but the recent boom in urbanization and silting of the lake has degraded the watre and made it unfit for drinking. The lake served as a source of water to old Pashan village, for growing crops and to the nearby Governor’s house. The lake and its surrounding area attracts migratory birds and so is popular spot for bird watchers. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has constructed a 300 metre footpath called the Nature Trail alongside the lake. It is constructed along the western shore of Pashan lake. Also, PMC has built a bamboo plantation and wall alongside the lake to protect it and attract birds.

Parvati Hill Temples

India /Maharashtra /Pune /Pune

Sight Address : Parvati Hill Temples is situated on Parvati Hill, Pune, India. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Parvati Hill Temples is believed to be built during 17th century. Located on top of Parvati Hill, the temple enshrines the idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishu, Devateshwar and Lord Karthikeya. In olden times, this temple solely served as the place of worship of Peshwa rulers. The hill temple can be reached by scaling 108 steps marked by specialised stone architectural works of Maratha style. At the Parvati Museum, located nearby, old manuscripts, rare coins and weapons, Sati Monument and Vetal Chabutra are housed. Situated at a height of 2,100 ft from sea level, the temple offers an aerial view of the entire city. Considered to be one of the oldest heritage structures in Pune, these temples serve as a reminder of the Peshwa rule in the region. Legend states that from the hill, Peshwa ruler Balaji Bajirao watched the British getting defeated at the Battle of Kirkee. Temple of Parvati and Sedeveshwar, which belongs to the 17th century, is located at the hill. Temples dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu and Lord Vitthal are also located on the hill. Built as a commemoration of the Peshwa rule, Parvati Museum has a collection of portraits of the heroes of the Peshwa dynasty, old manuscripts, weapons, coins and others. In the museum complex is also housed the Samadhi Sthan of Shrimant Nanasaheb Peshwa.

Parvati Hill Temples, Pune

Parvati Hill Temples, Pune

HistoryEdit

Parvati hill was known in the Maratha days with some small temples on it. The temples stand as a reminder of Nana Saheb Peshwa’s love for Chhatrapati Shri Shahu Maharaj. The main temple, as it stands today, was built by the third Peshwa, Shrimant Nana Saheb in the year 1749 A.D. The history of the temple is linked with a miracle. It is believed that Kashibai, the mother of the third Peshwa was suffering from a severe ailment in her right foot. One of her advisors informed her about a temple of Goddess to the South of Pune which was famous for its miraculous healing power. Kashibai went to the temple which was located on top of this hill and prayed for her recovery. She vowed that if she was cured of her ailment, she would build a temple there. She soon recovered and her son built a temple on the hill. This was the famous Parvati temple. It is true that the magnificant temples which stand today on the hill were built by the Peshwas. However, the hill of Parvati was known much earlier even in the days of Chhatrapati Shri Shivaji Maharaj. In a letter of grant (Inam-patra), granted under the seal of King Shivaji Maharaj, to one Brahmin Mahadbhat, son of Mudgalbhat Purandare, there is a clear reference to Parvati village.

Paragliding in Pune

India /Maharashtra /Pune /Pune

Sight Address : Temple Pilots offer their Paragliding sessions at Kamshet.(Kamshet (Oct – May) – 125 kms from Mumbai and 65 kms from Pune).Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Paragliding is the closest humans can get to the feeling of flying like a bird. It is a fun, safe way to experience flight in its simplest form. You simply lay out a wing on a hillside or mountain, inflate it over your head like a kite, run a few steps and before you know it you’ve stepped off into the sky! Once in the air, a pilot is able to maintain and even gain altitude using lifting air currents and thermals. Landing a paraglider is extremely easy. A pilot simply steers it into the landing area, and glides down for a very gentle touch down back on to earth. Temple Pilots Paragliding is a 13-year old flight training school, based in Pune, among the top schools in South East Asia. Registered and recognised by the Aeroclub of India, it boasts a 100% safety record. Temple Pilots conduct their Paragliding sessions at Kamshet.

Omkareshwar Temple

India /Maharashtra /Pune /Pune

Sight Address : Omkareshwar Temple, Pune is situated at Shaniwar Peth on the banks of the Mutha River . Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Omkareshwar temple is one of the biggest temples in Pune. This hallowed shrine of Lord Shiva stands as a symbol of endurance as it had survived the havoc created by the 1962 Panshet floods. Known for its extravagant style of construction and huge domes, the temple becomes one of the main attractions in Pune. The structure of the temple takes us back to the Peshwa regime as it was constructed during the reign of Sadashiv Bhau, the Peshwa. A 250 year old construction on the banks of the river Mutha still proclaims the glory of the fallen Peshwa Empire. It can be seen as a perfect piece of art and architecture prevailing in the 17th century. Beautiful carvings on the upper parts of the white dome are a sheer beauty. The stone roof of the temple too is embellished with carvings from Hindu mythology. Spacious verandas with columns enhance the grandeur of the shrine.
