Shaniwar Wada

India /Maharashtra /Pune /Pune

Sight Address : Shaniwar Wada is situated in Shaniwar Peth, Pune. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Shaniwar Wada was once the palace of the Peshwa rulers. This historic seven-storied palace was built by Bajirao Peshwa I. During his days, it became the seat of political power and achieved tremendous importance. To this date, Shaniwar Wada has been the city’s main landmark.
Within easy reach from all parts of the city, Shaniwar Wada was mysteriously destroyed in a fire in 1827. Mysterious fires continued to raze down portions of Shaniwar Wada in the early 19th century, and the entire palace –barring its Mirror Hall was burnt in the fire that broke out for about a fortnight. What now remains of this once palatial Wada are only the plinths, the fortification walls with five gateways, and nine bastions that enclosed the whole complex, elaborate foundations of the original palace and the nagarkhana with its fine wooden pillars and lattice work. One enters the palace through sturdy doors designed to dissuade enemy attacks.

Shaniwar Wada

Shaniwar Wada

HistoryEdit

Shaniwar Wada was constructed by Bajiroa 1st in the 1730. It was a 13 storey building. There is a story told about why this place was chosen for the construction. The story says-The Thorale (Elder) Bajirao once saw a rabbit chasing a dog in this place. Taking inspiration from this Shaniwar Wada was built, a place which would never see defeat. It used to be the head quarter of the Peshwas and it symbolizes Pune’s culture. Looking at the construction one understands how the structure was built giving highest priority to the security. The main entrance is known as ‘Delhi Darwaja’, others have named like Ganesh, Mastani, Jambhal, Khidki. There is a statue of Bajijrao (1 st) on a horse in the ground in front of Shaniwar Wada. Inside one can see Ganesh Mahal, Rang Mahal, Aarsa (Mirror) Mahal, Hasti Dant (Elephant Tusk) Mahal, Diwan Khana, Fountains. Currently renovated & also have a light & music show. The main part left is nagarkhana which gives good inside view. This is an expansive palace with its impressive fountains and gardens. The palace was the seat of Peshwa power and later was destroyed by a fire in 1828. All that remains are the walls that fortified this palace, with their sturdy doors, studded with spikes for added protection. Nearby is a street where the Peshwas unleashed elephants to trample dissidents to death.

Vishram Bagh Waada

India /Maharashtra /Pune /Pune

Sight Address : Vishrambaag Wada, is situated at Thorale Bajirao Road, Pune. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Vishrambaag Wada, a fine mansion situated at central Pune’s Thorale Bajirao Road, was the luxurious residence of Peshwa Bajirao II, the last Peshwa of Maratha confederacy, in the early 17th century. This is a three-storied mansion, known for its beautiful entrance and balcony with carved woodwork typical of the Peshwa period. The Wada’s eye-catching wooden facade is memorizing in its beauty, and has beautiful columns carved in the Suru form. On October 31,1880 a surprise fire engulfed the Wada ravaging the entire structure. Vishrambaug Wada was restored to its somewhat original appearance by public subscriptions and municipal contributions. For many years till 1958 it was to serve as the offices of the Poona Corporation. Today it houses assorted offices: a strange fate for what was once a king’s abode.

Vishram Bagh Waada

Vishram Bagh Waada

HistoryEdit

Vishrambaag Wada was built in 1807 AD at the price of Rs 2 lakh. It took six years to complete the construction. Bajirao II preferred this residence to the ill-fated Shaniwar Wada, the citadel of the Peshwas. Bajirao II stayed here for eleven years after which he was arrested by the British and detained in Bithur near Kanpur. His wife, Varanasibai, continued to stay here for a while before joining him in Bithur. Soon the British took over Pune. In 1821, a sanskrit school was started in Vishrambaag Wada, in a move to bringing education to the masses. Government Engineering College, Deccan College, Pune University and Agricultural University started out in the wada premises. In 1871, the eastern wing of the wada was entirely destroyed in a fire. In 1930, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) bought the property from the British government for a sum of Rs 1 lakh. Till 1959, the PMC operated out of Vishrambaag Wada, and several PMC department offices were based in the wada till 2003.

HistoryEdit

In the 18th century, soon after completion of Shree Devdeveshwar Temple on Parvati hill, Shrimant Nanasaheb Peshwa turned his attention towards the development and beautification of environs of Parvati hills. He decided to construct a lake at the foothills of Parvati. An island of about 25,000 sq.ft. (2,370 m2) area was retained in the middle of this lake. Later on, a beautiful garden was created on this island. Shrimant Nanasaheb Peshwa gave it a poetic name, “Sarasbaug”. In 1784, Shrimant Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa built a small temple in Sarasbaug and installed the idol of Shree Siddhivinayak Gajanan, the God he worshiped. Sarasbaug has now become a place of worship for people from all over the world and also a popular hang-out for Punekars.

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park

India /Maharashtra /Pune /Pune

Sight Address : Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is located along the Pune Satara Highway near the Bharati Vidyapeeth University. The park is 8 kilometers from Pune, close to the Katraj Bus Depot. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

The zoo was re-named as the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Centre (RGZP) and is still in the process of completion. It was inaugurated on the 14th March 1999. The zoo area is now 130 acres which also encompasses a water body popularly called as the Katraj Lake. The zoo is currently recognizedand categorized as a large zoo by the Central Zoo Authority and houses 362 animals, of which 147 animals are classified as endangered and critically endangered as per the schedules of the Wildlife Protection Act of India. The animal collection and the zoo premises are cared for by a dedicated work-force of around 100 personnel. At the time of inauguration, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park displayed the snake park, sambars, spotted deer and monkeys. Over the years all the animals from Peshwe Park have been shifted to Katraj; the last of the lot being shifted on 16th March 2005. All the animals are now housed in spacious, naturalistic, moated enclosures. The zoo is being designed and developed with the aim of contributing to the ex-situ conservation of the critically endangered fauna of the Western Ghats. One of our goals is to promote awareness of our precious bio-diversity to the zoo visitors and inculcate in them a sense of responsibility to conserve them. We aim to achieve this through interpretation, education programmes and interesting signage. The wildlife research centre has been established to promote and carry out research in wild animals as even today, there is not a lot of data available on wild animal physiology, behaviour, diseases and treatment.
In the recent years, the zoo has been successful in the captive breeding of many endangered animals like the Bengal tiger, sloth bear, four horned antelope, blackbuck, monitor lizard, jackal, peacock, Russell’s viper,Indian cobra, etc.

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park

HistoryEdit

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park initially was a Snake Park at Katraj. In 1953 the Pune Municipal Corporation created a Peshwe Park on about 7 acres (2.8 ha) where Madhavrao Peshwe had established a private menagerie in 1870. Located in the heart of the city at the base of the Parvati hills, this zoo exhibited animals in traditional cages. In 1986, Mr. Neelam Kumar Khaire (the first director of the park), with assistance from the Pune Municipal Corporation, created the Katraj Snake Park on land that was to become the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park. In 1997, in order to create a more modern zoo in accordance with the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority of India, the municipality selected a site in Katraj and started developing a new zoo. The zoo opened in 1999 as the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, and initially included only the snake park, sambars, spotted deer, and monkeys. Although it took until 2005, all of the animals from Peshwe Park were eventually moved to the new site, and Peshwe Park was closed. The park also incorporates a rescue center for injured and orphaned animals. It has run an Animal Adoption Scheme since October 2010.

Dinkar Kelkar spent almost 60 years traveling and purchasing objects from the remote areas and towns of India. Dividing into 36 sections, the collections are confined mostly to everyday life like pots, lamps, containers, nutcrackers, pen stands. ‘Mastani Mahal’ is regarded to be the masterpiece to this museum, which was erected here in its original form. Articles belonging to Mughal and Maratha periods that dates back to 17th century are displayed at Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum. Musical instruments, metalwork, exquisite chitrakathi paintings and a unique lock collection are the other attractions of the museum.

HistoryEdit

Raja Dinkar Kelkar started collecting exhibits around 1920 and one by one, section by section he raised the collections to around 15,000 objects of great attraction till the year 1960. He was very much fond of showing these exhibits to his friends and visitors in the same way as he wanted them to grasp his poems. Gradually the collection became a point of great attraction even to the visitors abroad. Dr. Kelkar could then easily win the minds of the authorities of the local bodies and of the State Govt. as well as of private institutions all over India, who came forward to help him to further collect the exhibits and convert the collection into a Regional Museum for Western India. It was to the credit of Shri. Y.B. Chavan , the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Shri. P.J. Chinmulgund, the then Education Secretary of the State Govt. that the one man collection could take the shape of a real Museum. In fact the names of such institutions, state – authorities and luminaries who contributed towards the building of this Museum are too many to be enumerated here. As a result of this public appreciation Dr. Kelkar decided in the year 1962 to hand -over his collection to the Dept. of Archaeology, Govt. of Maharashtra for developing it as a Regional Museum with better display and maintenance of its exhibits.
