Nehru Science Centre (NSC), Mumbai, is India’s largest interactive science center, located in Worli. The centre is named after India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1977, the centre started with the ‘Light and Sight’ exhibition, and then in 1979 a Science Park was built. On November 11, 1985 it was opened to the public by the late Rajiv Gandhi, at that time Prime Minister of India.

In 1977, Nehru Science Centre, first conceived as a Science & Technology Museum in late sixties, took final shape as India’s largest interactive science centre, to match the world trends in such public institutions. The centre opened its first semi-permanent exhibition `Light & Sight’ in 1977 followed by the world’s first ever Science Park in 1979, during the International Year of the child. On November 11, 1985 the full-fledged science centre was finally opened to public by the late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India. It is the largest science centre in the country, and has a sprawling 8 acres (32,000 m2) of science park with varieties of plants, trees and shrubs. More than 50 hands-on and interactive science exhibits on energy, sound, kinematics, mechanics, transport, etc. are installed in the park. The NSC building, with its unique architecture, houses several permanent science expositions on various theme.

Flora Fountain, at the Hutatma Chowk (Martyr’s Square), is an ornamentally and exquisitely sculpted architectural heritage monument located at the southern end of the historic Dadabhai Naoroji Road, called the Mile Long Road, at the Fort business district in the heart of South Mumbai, Mumbai, India. Flora Fountain, built in 1864, is a fusion of water, architecture and sculpture, and depicts the Roman goddess Flora. It was built at a total cost of Rs. 47,000, or 9000 pounds sterling, a princely sum in those days.

The fountain originally intended for the Victoria Gardens, is now surmounted by the figure of Plenty (“Courtesy of Special Collections, University of Houston Libraries”). History of the Flora Fountain is traced to the time when the Old Mumbai Fort was demolished in 1860 as part of the then Governor, Sir Bartle Frère’s efforts to improve civic sanitation (municipal improvements) and the urban space requirements of the growing city. Prior to this demolition, the Fort had been built between 1686 and 1743 by the British East India Company with three gates (the Apollo Gate, the Church Gate and the Bazaar Gate), a moat, esplanade, level open spaces on its western fringe (to control fires) and residences. A small road called the Hornby Road, named after the then Governor of Bombay (Mumbai) between 1771 AD and 1784 AD, also existed at the old Fort area. Consequent to the demolitions, the Hornby road was widened into a broad avenue and on its western side commercial plots were developed to build new commercial buildings in Neo Classical and Gothic Revival designs. The Hornby road, now named as Dadabhai Naoroji Road (D.N.Road), developed into a veritable sight of colonial splendour with Crawford Market linked to the Victoria Terminus anchoring the northern end and the Flora Fountain, forming the southern end of the Mile Long Road.The Flora Fountain was erected at the exact place where the Church gate (named after St. Thomas Cathedral, Mumbai ) stood before its demolition along with the Mumbai Fort. It was constructed by the Agri–Horticultural Society of Western India, out of a donation of Rs 20,000 by Cursetjee Fardoonjee Parekh. Designed by Richard Norman Shaw, it was sculpted in imported Portland stone by James Forsythe. A white coat of oil paint has to some extent marred the antiquity of the structure.The fountain was originally to be named after Sir Bartle Frère, the Governor of Bombay at the time, whose progressive policy had resulted in many of the great public buildings of Mumbai.However, the name was changed before the fountain was unveiled as Flora Fountain, named after Flora (mythology), a Roman Goddess of flowers and the season of spring; her majestic and pretty Portland stone statue adorns the top of the fountain. The four corners of the fountain are decorated with mythological figures. The fountain was originally intended to be built at the Victoria Gardens at Byculla but, in 1908, the grass plot and the palm trees that had camouflaged the fountain were cleared for creating space for pedestrians and horse–traffic between the tram lines and the kerb of the fountain.

Shivaji Park (Marathi: शिवाजी पार्क) is the largest park in Mumbai. It is situated in the Dadar area of Mumbai. Like the Azad Maidan and August Kranti Maidan (formerly Gowalia Tank Grounds), it is of historical and cultural value because of the political and social gatherings it has witnessed, both in pre- and post-independence Mumbai.

The park is named after the legendary 17th century warrior king of the region, Chhatrapati Shivaji. The park was created in 1925 by the Bombay Municipal Corporation, in the days of the British Raj. Through the name, the British authorities acknowledged Shivaji and the reverence his name commanded amongst the local Marathi population. Besides being a venue for gatherings of freedom fighters in British India, after independence in 1947 Shivaji Park was the focal point of the Samyukta Maharashtra Chalval (the struggle for a consolidated Maharashtra) that led to the present Maharashtra state being formed in 1960. During this period, the legendary writer, journalist, playwright, poet and social leader Acharya Prahlad Keshav Atre led this movement, addressing crowds of lakhs at this ground, earning him the title of “Lord of Shivaji Park”. On India’s victory over Pakistan in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, then prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and defence minister Yashwantrao Chavan addressed a Vijaysabha (victory gathering) here. Shivaji Park has been integral to the political gatherings of the local party Shiv Sena, and has witnessed numerous other political rallies.

Bombay High Court (Marathi: मुंबई उच्च न्यायालय) at Mumbai (Bombay), Maharashtra, is one of the oldest High Courts of India with jurisdiction over the states of Maharashtra & Goa, and, the Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The High Court has regional benches at Nagpur and Aurangabad in Maharashtra and Panaji, Goa. The court is one of the most distinguished high courts in the country. The first Chief Justice, the Attorney General and Solicitor General of Independent India were from this court. Since India’s Independence, 22 judges from this court have been elevated to the Supreme Court and 8 of them have been Chief Justice of India.The court has Original Jurisdiction in addition to its Appellate. The decisions of this court can be appealed only to the Supreme Court of India. The Bombay High Court has the sanctioned strength of 75 judges.

HistoryEdit

The Bombay High Court was inaugurated on 14 August 1862. Although the name of the city was changed from Bombay to Mumbai in 1995, the Court as an institution did not follow suit and remained as the Bombay High Court. The work on the present building of the High Court was commenced in April 1871 and completed in November 1878. It was designed by British engineer Col. J.A. Fuller. The first sitting in this building was on 10 January 1879. Architecture: Gothic revival in the Early English style. It is 562 feet (171 m) long and 187 feet (57 m) wide. To the west of the central tower are two octagonal towers. The statues of Justice and Mercy are atop this building. The 125th anniversary of the building is slated to be marked by the release of a book, commissioned by the Bar Association, called “The Bombay High Court: The Story of the Building – 1878–2003” by local historians Rahul Mehrotra and Sharada Dwivedi.

The track is oval shaped with 2,400 metres (7,900 ft) straight chute, spread over approximately 225 acres (0.91 km2; 0.352 sq mi) of open land in the heart of Mumbai city. It was created out of a marshy land known as Mahalakshmi Flats. Built in 1883 and modelled on the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, it is spread over land facing the sea. It was originally donated by Sir Cusrow N Wadia and today it is on lease from the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to Royal Western India Turf Club which runs the racecourse. The Grandstand, off the course, is a designated heritage structure. The racecourse is the only helipad open for civilian use in South Mumbai.

The Mahalakshmi Racecourse was built in 1883. The racing ground is oval in shape and the length of the race track spreads to about 2400 meters. The Mahalakshmi Racecourse is built on 225 acres of land, facing the sea. A huge open land sited in the middle of the bustling city of Mumbai, this racetrack is a mirror image of the Melbourne Caulfield Racecourse. Special lawns within the Mahalakshmi Racecourse are used for parties, weddings and other special occasions, with a capacity to house over 1500 to 2000 people. The racecourse has royal style structures that date back to the 1880’s. The structures possess immense architectural beauty with a lot of historical significance. The government is taking all possible measures to retain the racecourse’s ancient architecture.The horse racing season starts in mid-November and ends in the last week of April. On the first Sunday in February, the Derby is conducted annually and is attended by many of the city’s glitterati. Since the year 1986 till date McDowell’s Indian Derby has been sponsored by liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s UB Group under the name of flagship company McDowells Co. Ltd. as The McDowell’s Indian Derby.

Dhobi Ghat (Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat) is a well known open air laundromat in Mumbai, India. The washers, locally known as Dhobis, work in the open to wash the clothes from Mumbai’s hotels and hospitals. The “Dhobi Ghat” (open-air manually-operated laundry) is a surviving relic of Mumbai’s past. For the Dhobis, it’s generally a hereditary profession, with most of the washer-men’s families working here for last 2 or maybe 3 generations, their technique having remained virtually the same. The soiled clothes are first soaked in boiling water with Caustic Soda and then “flogged” on a slab to get physically rid them of dirt and stains etc. After drying them in the open, clothes are ironed with age old charcoal presses with heavy wooden handles. It’s a great photo opportunity if nothing else, you can get a view from the bridge next to the Mahalaxmi station. Most of the local people find it rather amusing that an activity as mundane as washing arouses such curiosity in the tourists.

Dhobi Ghat

The BMC has, however, decided to retain the British era flooring of the Dhobi Ghat because of its historical significance. “The plan to renovate Dhobi Ghat is primarily to provide better conditions for the washer-men”, said BMC City Engineer D M Phase. The Rs 2.4-crore project, mooted in 2006, is expected to be completed in about two years. “As the Dhobi Ghat is dilapidated and in a shambles, tourists prefer to view the place from a distance. The viewing gallery will help them get a better look”, said an official involved with its restoration. The viewing gallery is proposed to be constructed alongside the footpath near the Mahalaxmi Bridge, built in a way that vehicular traffic is not obstructed. There are also plans for a parking space nearby. “But the plans for the car park and the viewing gallery will only be implemented if the railways, bridges department and other authorities give us an NOC”, said Ghotge.

Rajabai Clock Tower

The Rajabai tower was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, an English architect. He modelled it on Big Ben, the clock tower of the UK houses of Parliament in London. The foundation stone was laid on March 1, 1869 and construction was completed in November 1878. The total cost of construction came to Rs. 2 lakhs (Rs. 200,000), a princely sum in those days. This entire cost was defrayed by Premchand Roychand, a prosperous broker who founded the Bombay Stock Exchange on the condition that the tower be named after his mother Rajabai. Premchand Roychand’s mother was blind and as a staunch follower of Jain religion she was supposed to consume her dinner before evening. The evening bell of the tower helped her to know the time without anyone’s help. The tower was closed to the public after it became a frequent spot for those attempting to commit suicide.

Mumba Devi Temple is a renowned ancient temple dedicated to ‘Goddess Mumbadevi’. This beautiful temple situated in Mumbai was built in the 18th century. The ‘Koli’ fishermen or the early inhabitants of Mumbai greatly respect and honor Goddess Mumbadevi and consider her as their guardian. Goddess Mumbadevi is recognized as ‘Goddess Shakti’ or the Goddess of Power. Today, this elegant temple is sited amidst the crowded steel and cloth markets of Mumbai. Within the jam-packed Zaveri Bazaar, one can see the Mumba Devi Temple surrounded by several flower shops. People attend the ‘Aartis’ in this temple that are conducted in the mornings and evenings. The Mumba Devi Temple is open on all days except Mondays. Apart from the regular devotees who flock the temple, tourists from all over the world too, come to admire this gorgeous temple in Mumbai. Mumbai city derives its name from the Goddess Mumbadevi and therefore, this temple is truly an important structure for the dwellers of this beautiful city.

Mumbadevi Temple

HistoryEdit

This temple was built in honour of the Goddess Mumba. The Mumbadevi temple is six centuries old. The first Mumbadevi temple was situated at Bori Bunder, and is believed to have been destroyed between 1739 and 1770. After the destruction a new temple was erected at the same place at Bhuleshwar. The Goddess personifies Mother Earth and is still worshipped by the descendants of the Dravidian population of western and southern India. The original temple built at the site where the Victoria Terminus station earlier was by Koli fishermen was demolished around 1737 and a new temple was erected in its place at Phansi Talao. The modern shrine contains an image of the Goddess Mumbadevi dressed in a robe with a silver crown, a nose stud and a golden necklace. To the left is a stone figure of Annapurna seated on a peacock. In front of the shrine is a tiger, the carrier of the Goddess.
