Marve, also known as Borivali is a village very close to Mumbai. Now this place has become quite industrialized, but its beauty remains the same. One can witness the remains of colonial time in Marve. Watching sunsets and sunrises is really appealing here. Manori is famous for all night beach parties. Visitors prefer to visit the beach on moonlight nights. So, on these days, this beach is very crowded. Village folks serve food and let their houses on rents to tourists. Gorai is so near to Manori, and this beach offers the countryside feeling to visitors. Although, the waters of Gorai beach are safe for swimming throughout the year, it is advised to avoid during monsoon because of its treacherous currents. Tourists can reach Marve within an hour, as it is just 40 km from Mumbai. One goes up to Malad railway station (a suburban station on the Western Railway line) and proceed by road. A 15-minute ferry ride from Marve or Borivali will take one to Manori or Gorai. It is approachable by boat as well.

Gorai has a large East Indian population. East Indians are Roman Catholics who were baptized by the Portuguese when they arrived here in the 16th century. Gorai has three churches. The oldest one, Reis Magos or the Three Magi, on the banks of the Vairalla Tank in the village of Culvem located on the north border of Gorai, was built by the Franciscan missionaries between 1595 & 1602. The newer parish church, also named after the Three Magi, was built in 1810, and is located about three-quarters of a mile to the south of the ruined, original parish church. The third is the Infant Jesus Chapel built near the ruins of the old church.

A Dakhma also known as Cheel Ghar in Hindi and Tower of Silence (not a translation) in English, is a circular, raised structure used by Zoroastrians for exposure of the dead, particularly to scavenging birds. The common Dakhma or Dokhma (from Middle Persian Dakhmag) originally denoted any place for the dead. Similarly, in the medieval texts of Zoroastrian tradition, the word Astodan appears, but today denotes an ossuary. In the Iranian provinces of Yazd and Kerman, the technical term is deme or dema. In India, the term doongerwadi came into use after a tower was constructed on a hill of that name. The word Dagdah appears in the texts of both India and Iran but, in 20th-century India, signified the lowest grade of temple fire (cf. Fire temple). The term “Tower of Silence” is a neologism attributed to Robert Murphy, who, in 1832, was a translator of the British colonial Government in India. It is not the literal meaning of “Avestan (sic) Dakhma” as suggested by the Encyclopædia Britannica. While the stem Dakhma- does exist in the Avestan language, its meaning there is not conclusively established. The contexts indicate a negative connotation and that it does not signify a construction of any kind.

The Bhaktivedanta hospital is another project emerging from the Radha Gopinath community. It has become a flagship center for holistic health and spiritual care in Mumbai.Sri Sri Radha Gopinath were installed on July 18, 1988 at a grand function with more than 400 people attending. It was a fulfilment of the prophecy made by Srila Prabhupada in 1971. Dharavi is a slum and administrative ward, over parts of Sion, Bandra, Kurla and Kalina suburbs of Mumbai, India. It is sandwiched between Mahim in the west and Sion in the east and spread over an area of 175 hectares, or 0.67 square miles (1.7 km2). In 1986, the population was estimated at 530,225, but modern Dharavi has a population of between 600,000 and over 1 million people. Dharavi is one of the largest slums in the world. It used to be the largest slum in Mumbai at one time, but as of 2011, there are four slums in Mumbai larger than Dharavi. Dharavi is situated between Mumbai’s two main suburban railway lines, the Western and Central Railways. To its west are Mahim and Bandra, and to the north lies the Mithi River, which empties into the Arabian Sea through the Mahim Creek. To its south and east are Sion and Matunga. Both its location and poor drainage systems make Dharavi particularly vulnerable to floods during the wet season.

HistoryEdit

In the 18th century, Dharavi was an island. In February 1739, Chimnaji Appa attacked Bassein. Before that, he took possession of Dharavi. The area of present-day Dharavi was predominantly mangrove swamp before the late 19th century, inhabited by Koli fishermen. However, the fishing industry disappeared when the swamp areas filled in. A dam at Sion, adjacent to Dharavi, hastened the process of joining separate islands into one long, tapered mass. Thus began the transformation of the island city of Bombay. In the process, Dharavi’s fishing town was deprived of its traditional sustenance, but the newly drained marshes provided space for new communities to move in. Migrants from Gujarat established a potters’ colony, tanners from Tamil Nadu and Maharashtrian tanners belonging to the Charmarkar caste migrated to Dharavi and set up the leather tanning industry. Other artisans, like the embroidery workers from Uttar Pradesh, started the ready-made garments trade. Tamil migrants, including Tamil Muslims, Adidravidars and Nadars started coming into the area in the late 19th century, many of whom worked in nearby tanneries; a large influx came in the 1920s. Bombay’s first Tamil school and Dharavi’s first school was constructed in 1924. It remained the only initiative of Shri. M.V. Duraiswamy, a well-known social worker and congress leader of that region. The Dharavi co-operative housing society promoted 338 flats and 97 shops and was named “Dr. Baliga Nagar.”

Jyotiba Phule Market is the official name of this must-see market – but of course, no one calls it that! Crawford Market it was, and Crawford it remains. The market is housed in a building that looks like something out of Victorian London, but over-run with a crazy riot of local colour. There’s a 50-foot awning, which lets in light, and in the natural light, you will see little shops and stalls everywhere. Go during the day-time. You’ll stumble across lots of fruits and vegetables – there are mounds and mounds of them on display, not just an orderly stacking of a few dozens! There are tiny knick-knack shops that sell masalas, pickles, chocolates, toothpaste and lots of other stuff that people want to buy. Lots of things to photograph if you are a camera-addict. There’s also a meat section and a pets market – but if you’re squeamish, you should avoid this area. Pets are housed with a casual disregard for their well-being, in cramped conditions. But then, this is a city where even humans live in very tiny cramped huts. From Crawford Market, you should walk into the nearby lanes, to see the traditional bazaar areas. It’s highly recommended. After all, Mumbai is a city that lives not in its monuments or buildings, but in its streets and markets and people. The Jama Masjid is nearby as well as the Mumbadevi Temple.

One end of the market is a pet store. Different varieties of dogs, cats, and birds can be found in this area.Also, endangered species are illegally sold there.[2] Most of the sellers inside the market sell imported items such as foods, cosmetics, household and gift items. It was the main wholesale market for fruits in Mumbai until March 1996, when the wholesale traders were relocated to Navi Mumbai (New Bombay). The building, completed in 1869, was donated to the city by Cowasji Jehangir. After India’s independence, the market was renamed after Maharashtrian social reformer, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. In 1882, the building was the first in India to be lit up by electricity.The market was designed by British architect William Emerson. The edifice is a blend of Norman and Flemish architectural styles. The friezes on the outside entrance depicting Indian farmers, and the stone fountains inside, were designed by Lockwood Kipling, father of novelist Rudyard Kipling. The market covers an area of 22,471 sq m (24,000 sq ft), of which 5,515 sq m (6,000 sq ft) is occupied by the building itself. The structure was built using coarse buff coloured Kurla stone, with red-stone from Bassein. It has a 15 m high skylight awning designed to allow the sunlight brighten up the marketplace.

Built in 1945 and bought by the Indian Navy in 1957, the massive aircraft carrier INS Vikrant now serves as a fascinating museum. Admission includes the ferry ride out to the ship, then a walk through the various quarters, the hold (displaying diving bells, submarines and various aircraft) and finally the enormous deck with take-off and landing strip. The Vikrant served in the India-Pakistan War of 1971, and in the liberation of Goa from the Portuguese, providing a sea base for Harrier jump jets, Sea-hawks and helicopters, some of which are still on board. Tickets are available from the booking offices near the Gateway.

INS Vikrant was ordered as the HMS Hercules (R49) by the Royal Navy. She was laid down on 12 November 1943 by ckers-Armstrong on the River Tyne.She was launched on 22 September 1945. However, with the end of World War II, her construction was suspended in May 1946 and she was laid up for possible future use.In January 1957 she was sold to India. She was towed to Belfast to complete her construction and for modifications by Harland and Wolff. A number of improvements to the original design were ordered by the Indian Navy, including an angled deck, steam catapults and a modified island.The Indian Navy considered buying her sister HMS Leviathan (R97) as well and commissioning her as the INS Vikram (R13). However, this never materialized due to budgetary concerns.The Alize Anti-Submarine Aircraft.INS Vikrant (R11) was commissioned into the Indian Navy by then Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Vijayalakshmi Pandit on 4 March 1961 in Belfast. The name Vikrant was taken from Sanskrit vikrānta meaning “stepping beyond”, i.e. “courageous” or “bold”. Captain Pritam Singh was the first commanding officer of the carrier.

A hillock in Southern Mumbai, Malabar Hill is one of the prominent residential areas in the city. Known for housing Walkeshwar temple and Banganga tank, this hillock is situated at a height of 50 meters, highest point in Southern Mumbai. One of the most expensive residential areas in the world, Malabar Hills is home to mansions of many celebrities as well as the official residences of the Governor of Maharashtra and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Malabar Hill is also famous for some of Mumbai’s most prominent tourist destinations such as Banganga Tank, Walkeshwar temple, hanging gardens etc. and also lies in the vicinity of marine drive and Chowpatti Beach. There are plenty of legends related to Malabar Hills. One version says this area belonged to a trader Muslim family (Keyi Family) from Northern Malabar in Kerala, which they had to surrender to British East India Company as truce. Priyadarshani park was created in the late 60’s by an initiative launched by the Malabar Hill Citizens’ Forum to convert this previously Junkyard area into something worthwhile. Today that land has been transformed into the beautiful Priyadarshini Park & Sports Complex where thousands of people from all age groups and all walks of life come to enjoy and relax. If you want to feel the sea, sun and wind and experience a few hours of bliss, it is here, at Priyadarshini Park and Sports Complex, on Nepean Sea Road. Nepean Sea Road is an upmarket neighbourhood near Malabar Hill in South Mumbai. The area is named after Sir Evan Nepean, 1st Baronet, a British politician and administrator, and the Governor of Bombay (1812–1819). Priyadarshini is spread across 20 acres of a beautiful green belt on the sea front, with one-third of the park developed for the activities of the Priyadarshini Sports Complex.

Many Deluxe and Super Deluxe buses are available to travel in and out of the city. Bus fare is about Rs 3 to 4 per kilometer.

Train : Mumbai is the headquarters of Indian railway system. Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Station is the major one which connects all most parts of Indian cities to Mumbai. Other railway stations in Mumbai are Dadar and Kurla, and Churchgate. Suburban railway is the backbone of the transport system. Three main railway lines connect most of the city. Trains are always on time and economical, however they might be crowded in peak hours. The basic fare may range from 5 INR to 100 INR. The trains run from 4 am to 1pm, and there are trains arriving at the station every five minutes. It is also advisable to take care of valuables even in the first class section. Rush hour constitutes office timings from 8 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 7pm. The traveller should avoid the rush hour. Women travellers can make use of the separate women compartments and they might be less crowded than the general compartments.

Air : Mumbai has its own domestic and international airport, known as Chatrapati Shivaji international airport , Located 30 km from centre of the city, Nariman Point and 4 km from the domestic terminal of Santa Cruz, this airport operates 24X7. Almost all airlines provide services to Mumbai. Mumbai is well connected to all major cities in India and also connected to many cities abroad including Singapore, New York, Bangok, Hong Kong and to many gulf cities. Others : Auto richshaws: The auto rickshaws of Mumbai are the most common means of transport and are cheap also. they charge Rs 9 for the first 1.6 km and Rs 5 for km covered afterwards. The night charge is 25% more of the total charge. However, one needs to be careful as these auto rickshaws use longer routes in order to increase their fare amount.
