Sarjekot Fort is one amongst the many fortresses constructed by the Maratha ruler, Shivaji. Lying north of the Sindhudurg Fort, this fort comes under the group of forts that were raised in and around Malvan, between the 16th and 18th centuries. It is believed that the fort was built in 1668 to provide shelter to Shivaji’s ships during storms and the rainy season. It is located near the mouth of the Talashil River, from where people can enjoy very good views of the sunrise and sunset.

One of the enduring symbols of Maharashtra’s rich historical past is the Sindhudurg Fort. The fort derives its name from the combination of two words, Sindhu meaning sea and Durg meaning fort. Sindhudurg is just 510 km from Mumbai on the Goa Highway.
The entrance to the fort is by the Dilli Darwaja to the north-east. The main gate is so well camouflaged within the folds of the rampart walls that it is visible only at really close quarters. A shrine to Goddess Jarimari guards the entrance to the fort. On the right, perched atop the main gate, is the fort’s most prized relic – the footprint and palm impression of the revered Shivaji Maharaj, set on a slab of dry lime.
Apart from the customary shrines of Bhawani, Mahadeo, Jarimari and Mahapurush, Sindhudurg enjoys the distinction of having the only temple dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji, which was built by his son Rajaram. One does also come across some ruins of ancient temples, wells and cisterns throughout the fort. The Shivaji Jayanti, Ram Navami, Janmashtami, Mahashivratri and Ganesh Chaturthi are some of the prominent festivals celebrated here on a grand scale.
Some of the temples are still in use and are maintained by the 20 odd families that live on this island fort. The Sakpal Naik family, the original killedars, still reside in one of the 16 houses within the fort.

Sindhudurg, Shivaji built this ocean fort in 1664 AD on a low rocky 48-acre island off the Malvan coast. Vijaydurg and Sindhudurg are twin forts from the days of Shivaji’s time that is a historic place with its serene coastal beauty. It is believed that Shivaji personally selected the site for the construction of the fort. For casting and the foundation stones, over 2,000 khandis (4,000 mounds) of iron and lead were used to it lay down firmly. There is a temple dedicated to Shivaji inside the fort. This is the only shrine of its kind in the country, which was built by his son Rajaram. Other temples dedicated to Hindu deities renowned in the Maratha pantheon (as Maruti, Bhavani, Mahadeo, Jarimai, Mahapurush, etc) lie within the limits of the fort. The Vijaydurg or ‘Victory Fort’ and the Padamgarh Fort are other attractions in the vicinity. Rajapur and Kudal are the nearest railway stations. Sindhudurg is just 510 km from Mumbai via the Goa Highway. The fort can be reached through a narrow a channel, between two small islands of Dhontara and Padmagad. Ferries ply at regular intervals from the Malvan port to the Sindhudurg fort.

A unique tradition observed here is that once in a five years village seek divine verdict of Lord Rameshwar and the occasion called “Gavpalne” takes place. Achara beach is an enchantress of other beaches in Sindhudurg. In magnificent geographic combination the beautiful stretch of pristine shiny sand has given rise to equally alluring shallow blue water estuary that follows meandering course amidst ‘Jamdool Island’ . Estuary is paradise for swimmers, sunbathers and dolphin watchers. Dolphin season is between October and February. Cruising along it, reveals deeper charms of Achare such as viewing diverse, migrating bird species during season, indigenous birds like peacock . It is a few km ahead of Tondavali beach. There are some fishing activities around here but mostly it is a good space to chill with the sea waves.

Godess Bharadidevi of Aangnewadi (Shree Bharadi Devi) is renowned all over. She has occured in a self existent rock from. It is believed that when a person asks for a favor, the Godess fulfills it. Once in a year devotees from Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka come together in a village for pilgrimage.
Here Goddess is offered ‘Otti’ ( Coconut and Blouse Piece) . The local people who are entitled to honor and respect come and sit together in a temple on a Dali ( Mat Made up of Bomboo) and decide a day of holding a fair. According to the rituals Mask, Saree and Ornaments are worm to the Devi; then begins offering of `Otti’ which is continued through out the fair day. Women from every house on the same day quitely cook food after their bath. The food is offered to the Devi as a prasad for which devotees call Tat Lagne. The prasad is then distributed among the pilgrims who show their presence in thousands during the fair day.

Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary spread over an area of approximately 154 square kilometers, the Chaprala wildlife sanctuary is a majestic place to visit for the nature lovers. Hidden in the majestic Western Ghats, the Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the greatest of all wildlife sanctuaries. It is one of the greatest places where the flora and fauna reach their best of form. Its rich collection of vegetation and wild life is a real asset for any wildlife sanctuary. The major flora found in the sanctuary includes Bamboo, Khair, Casia, Auriculata, Bel, Hiwar, Palas, Salaia, Teak, Tendu, Zizphus Helicteres, Dhawda, Sal, Babul, Terminenalia species, Bija, etc. The commonly found shrubs include varieties of Isora, Solanium Giganteum, Lantna etc. The Sanctuary is also home to nearly 131 species of wild animals like tiger, leopard, jungle cat, sloth bear and wild dog. Many of the species are included under the endangered species list like two species of bird, two species of reptiles, Indian python, Wild boar, spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, blue bull, jungle cat, jackal, peacock, jungle fowl and flying squirrel are also found in this sanctuary. Painganga  wildlife sanctuary is situated at a distance of about 424 sq. km. It is Situated in Yavatmal district and the Painganga river borders it on three sides. Animals like tigers, sloth beers, wild dogs, sambar, nilgai, chinkara, cheetal etc. and birds like bulbuls, rollers, cuckoos, vultures, kites, eagles and so on are found here.
