The public agency for Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd (HUDCO) wanted an office building for its workers and made the unprecedented decision to invite chosen non-profit organisations that shared their concern with habitat to share that work space.In 2009, the India Habitat Centre co-hosted the first Habitat Summit with the Urban Habitats Forum, a professional civil society initiative whose primary purpose is to serve as a multi-disciplinary public awareness and educational platform, and to facilitate positive change in India’s cities by engaging all stakeholders of society in shaping India’s built environment. Hayat Bakhsh Bagh is made in the typical Persian Garden Style divided into well defined squares with two water canals, a water pool and Pavilions built in the centre of both the northern and southern side named ‘Saawan’ and ‘Bhaadon’ respectively after the names of the two main monsoon months. The northern Pavilion was flanked with a gold and silver flower vase on either side. The garden actually sits at the centre of a water pool at the confluence of these two water channels with a red sandstone pavilion built at the centre by Bahadur Shah-II during the 19th Century AD and named after him as the ‘Zafar Mahal’.

Hayat Baksh Bagh (Life-Bestowing Gardens) in Delhi

Hayat-Bakhsh-bagh (‘life-bestowing garden’) is called to the area occupied by a garden north of the Moti Masjid, divided into squares on the pattern of Mughal gardens with causeways and channels between them. It finds mention in the contemporary accounts, although its present layout is new. At the north-eastern corner of the garden is a tower, called Shah-Burj, now dome less, which suffered much during the Mutiny. A similar tower known as Asad-Burj stands on the south-eastern corner of the fort. The water for feeding the Nahr-i-Bihisht was apparently lifted up to the Shah-Burj from the river and then carried by channels to the various palaces. The present pavilion adjoining the tower on the south was perhaps built during Aurangzeb’s reign. In the centre of the north wall is a marble cascade sloping into a ‘scalloped’ basin. Two other marble pavilions in the centre of the northern and southern sides of the garden are known as Sawan and Bhadon, two principal months of the rainy season, either because they represent those months or wereused during those months, but which is Sawan and which is Bhadon is not exactly certain. The northern one is provided with a tank with niches for candles in its sides, so that the water cascading over them would create a picturesque effect. On the elevated strip of land along the eastern wall stood two small marble pavilions, built by Bahadur Shah II, the northern one known as Moti-Mahal and the southern one as Hira-mahal. The former was removed after the Mutiny; the latter still stands. In the center of the garden is a large tank with a red stone pavilion in its middle, originally connected by a causeway with the garden. It is known as Zafar-Mahal, after Bahadur Shah II, by whom it was built, in about 1842.

Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib is built at the site in the Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi, where the revered ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded, on Wednesday, November 24, 1675, on the orders of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam.Before his body could be quartered, further disrespected and exposed to public view, it was recovered under the cover of darkness caused by a severe dust storm by one of the Guru’s disciples, Lakhi Shah Vanjara, who then set his home alight to cremate the Guru’s body.Similarly, the ‘Sis’ (head) of Guru Tegh Bahadur was recovered and taken to Anandpur Sahib by Bhai Jaita, another devotee of the Guru where it was cremated by the Guru’s young son, Guru Gobind Rai. Bhai Jaita who had been of the Majhabi (scavenger) caste, was renamed Bhai Jivan Singh on the day that Guru Gobind Rai created the Khalsa in 1699 and added the names Singh or Kaur to the names of all initiated Sikhs. Bhai Jivan Singh was one of the Martyrs at Chamkaur. Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth and last living Guru of the Sikhs. Across the road and facing the Gurdwara Sis Ganj is the site of the Kotwali (police station), where the faithful disciples of the Great Guru Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Dyala and Bhai Sati Das were tortured to death at about the same time.

Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahibis located at the site in the Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi, is where the ninth sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded on the orders of the Mughal emperor in 1675 AD, Aurangzeb, for refusing to convert to Islam. Chhatarpur Templeis popularly known as Shri Adhya Katyani Shakti Peeth Mandir since it is located in a down town area in south of Delhi, Chattarpur. This is the second largest temple complex in India, and is dedicated to Goddess, Katyayani. It is located at Chhatarpur,on the southwestern outskirts of the city of Delhi and is just 4 km (2.5 mi)from Qutub Minar, off Mehrauli-Gurgaon road.The temple was established in 1974, by Baba Sant Nagpalji, who died in 1998. His samadhi shrine lies in the premises of the Shiv-Gauri Nageshwar Mandir within the temple complex. This temple was considered as the biggest temple in India and second largest in the world, before the Akshardham Temple was created in 2005 in Delhi. This temple is totally constructed from marble and on all the facets there is jaali (perforated stone or latticed screen) work.

Chhatarpur Temple was built in 1974. Construction was started by Swami Nagpal Maharaj. Maharaj was a devotee of Durga and built the Chhatarpur Temple as a temple dedicated to the goddess Katyayani, a goddess that is a form of Durga.The temple is currently the second largest temple in all of India. The temple has been in continuous construction since 1974 and it is not certain as to exactly when the construction is going to be finished. The Chhatarpur Temple is already sixty acres in size. In fact, it is not too far from the Qutub Complex in Delhi near Mehrauli.The entire temple complex spread over 60 acres (24.3 ha), has over 20 small and large temples divided in three different complexes. The main deity in the temple is Goddess Katyayani, a part of Navadurga, the nine forms of Hindu goddess Durga or Shakti, worshipped during the Navratri celebrations.

Appu Ghar was India’s first and most popular amusement park located in New Delhi, the capital city of India. It was opened by Shri Gian Vijeshwar and Mr Suresh Chawla in 1984 to commemorate the 1982 Asian Games, which were held in New Delhi. Appu Ghar is India’s first amusement park.International Amusement Limited (IAL) was incorporated on 15th September 1984 by Mr. Gian Vijeshwar, a Sweden based businessman of Indian origin, with the primary objective to conceptualize and set up India’s first amusement park “Appu Ghar”. Inaugurated on 19th November 1984 it was spread over 18 acres of land, it housed 20 rides and a water park in its premises. Appu Ghar successfully operated this park for 25 years and because of an excellent recall value, the park received an average of 1.4 million visitors annually. The park ran its operations for the last time on the 17th of February 2008 before shutting its doors but vowing to return greater than ever before. Not only did IAL pioneer the amusement industry in India, they continue to be the largest player in the country. Its first venture Appu Ghar was a phenomenal success because of its incredible insight into the Indian local sentiments and its high international ambition. The company’s local understanding and success story motivated to bring forth more exciting projects to the Indian palate. Appu Ghar was named after its mascot, an elephant. “Appu” is the name of the elephant and “Ghar” means house in Hindi. Appu was a live elephant mascot that became the star of the 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi. The elephant is for the enjoyment of the kids and it symbolizes a childish nature in everyone.

Ala-i- Minar started by Alauddin Khalji but the sultan lived to see it only the height of 24.5m. It was built to match the enlarged Quwwat-ul-Islam masjid (which was also Khalji’s work). Today it is used more like an illustration, by parents, of what-happens-when-you-get-over-ambitious; viz the plans remain unfinished. Ambition has never really been encouraged as a virtue in India. Ala ud din Khilji started building the Alai Minar, which was conceived to be two times higher than Qutub Minar. The construction was abandoned, however, after the completion of the 24.5 meter high first storey; soon after death of Ala-ud-din. The first story of the Alai Minar still stands today.

Teen Murti Bhavan is a beautiful monument that is special since it was the home of Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the first Prime Minister of India. It was formerly known as the Flagstaff House, since in those days, it used to be the dwelling place of the British Commander-in-Chief.

Teen Murti Bhavan was originally known as ‘Flagstaff House’ and was the residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces in India. Situated in a large estate, the building is constructed of stone and stucco, and faces the south side of the Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidents House). It has arched entrance, recessed window, and the first floor has a pillared veranda on the back on the building which overlooks the lawns. After Independence (1947) the house was taken over as the residence of the Prime Minister. On Nehru’s death in 1964, the house was converted into a national memorial comprising a library and a museum. Today, in a ground floor room of the Nehru Museum, his South Block office in the Ministry of External Affairs has been ‘recreated’ with the same furniture and other articles he used, along with several mementos, objects and manuscripts. The complex has headquarters of Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, established in 1964, Nehru Memorial Library, and also the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship. The Nehru Memorial Library is one of the finest ones for information on modern Indian history. Started in 1966, it functioned from the main building itself, till its present building was inaugurated within the complex grounds, in 1974.

South Extension is a neighbourhood of South Delhi, India. Situated on Ring Road, Delhi, just east of All India Institute of Medical Sciences. It is divided into two parts – South Extension I and South Extension II. This is one of the posh market places in Delhi, promising international shopping experience. It is a good place for tourists to see locals going about their daily activities. While the market remains closed on Mondays, it is busiest on Sundays. The market is quite famous for high priced designer stuff and branded clothes. For Delhi’s trendy teenagers, this is a great market to visit. Located on Ring Road, South Extension (known to locals as “South Ex”) is a huge neighbourhood in South Delhi and is divided into two parts: South Extension I and South Extension II. Rashtrapati Bhavan is multi-dimensional. It is a vast mansion and its architecture is breathtaking. More than these, it has a hallowed existence in the annals of democracy for being the residence of the President of the largest democracy in the world. Few official residential premises of the Head of the State in the world will match the Rashtrapati Bhavan in terms of its size, vastness and its magnificence.The present day Rashtrapati Bhavan was the erstwhile residence of the British Viceroy. Its architect was Edwin Landseer Lutyens. The decision to build a residence in New Delhi for the British Viceroy was taken after it was decided in the Delhi Durbar of 1911 that the capital of India would be shifted from Calcutta to Delhi in the same year. It was constructed to affirm the permanence of British rule in India. This building gave the impression, in the words of a critique, the setting of a perpetual Durbar. The building and its surroundings were supposed to be ‘an empire in stone’, ‘exercising imperial sway’ and containing in it, “the abode of a disinterested elite whose rule was imposed from above”. That ’empire in stone’ and the perpetual Durbar was transformed to be the permanent institution of democracy on 26th January 1950 when Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President of India and occupied this building to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of India. It was from that day that this building was renamed as Rashtrapati Bhavan – the President’s House.Apart from Edwin Lutyens, the Chief architect and Chief Engineer Hugh Keeling there were many Indian contractors who were involved in the construction of this building. While a Muslim contractor Haroun-al-Rashid did most of the work of the main building the forecourt was built by Sujan Singh and his son Sobha Singh. Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi

Rashtrapati Bhavan was officially inaugurated in the year 1931 and was constructed at a cost of 877,136 pounds (Rs. 12.8 million). The Rashtrapati Bhavan was built with a floor space of 200 000 square feet and has four floors and 340 rooms. There are over 54 bedrooms together with additional accommodation for guests in the President House. The entire building was constructed using 700 million bricks and three million cubic feet of stones. Interestingly, there were hardly any steel used to construct the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Another interesting fact about the Rashtrapati Bhavan is that the building, which was supposed to have completed in four years took a rather long time of over seventeen years to get completed and just after one year of its completion, India got its independence. The Rashtrapati Bhavan of India is perhaps one of the best known monuments of the country and one of the most significant achievements of Sir Lutyens. It is a magnum opus of symmetry, discipline, outline, colour and harmony. Lord Irwin was the first occupant of the Palace. The architecture of the House combines Mughal and Western architectural styles.Towards the west of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, lies the huge Mughal garden designed again by Sir Lutyens. This beautiful garden has flowers and shrubs, along with series of decorative fountains that make it all the more attractive. The Mughal Garden is home to countless lovely flowers including some species of exotic roses, which simply cheer up the ambience. The garden opens for public every spring during the months of February and March amidst tight security. Enter to the Rashtrapati Bhavan is banned without permission and the permits to visit the Bhawan can be obtained from the reception office on Raisina Road. The most appropriate time to visit the Rashtrapati Bhavan is during February, so that you can also get a chance to see the colourful medley of flowers at the Mughal Gardens.

Trains operate every 10 minutes from 5am to 1am. Cycle-rickshaws are still in use in parts of Old Delhi, though they have been banned in Chandni Chowk to reduce congestion. Let’s hope they’re not banned in other areas, as they’re the best way to get around Old Delhi – the drivers are wizards at weaving through the crowds. Tips are appreciated for this gruelling work.

Rang Mahal is commonly known as the Begum Mahal or the Colour Palace, which is situated near Diwan-i-Khas inside the Red Fort. This palace was the residence of the chief wife of the emperor and was a beautiful palace with fountains at its base. It was later on transformed to a lotus-shaped marble palace which used to supply perfumed water through the pipe lines.

Rand Mahal is also known as the Begum Mahal and is located near Diwan-i-Khas in the Red Fort. It was the residence of the Sultan’s main wife. Originally, this charming palace was adorned with fountains at its base, but later it was transformed to a lotus-shaped marble palace. It is believed that perfumed water was supplied through the pipe lines and the ceilings of this palace were covered with gold and silver in the olden times. Inside the Rang Mahal, is the Mumtaz Mahal which is equally beautiful in its design. In 1857, during the rebellion it was converted into a guard room of the British.In 1912, it was converted to an Archaeological museum.
