Gandhi Mandapam is a Memorial to Mahatma Gandhi who had visited Kanyakumari in 1925 and 1937. It is constructedat a place on the seashore, near to Kumari Amman Temple, where his ashes were kept for public darshan before immersion in the sea on February 12, 1948. The Mandapam is built in Orrisa style of architecture and designed in such a way that on his birthday, 2 October, the rays of the sun, through a hole on the roof, falls exactly on the place where the urn was kept.

A statue of Mahatma Gandhi has since been erected at the very spot where his ashes were stored. The plaque on the urn mentions the date when the ashes were kept there as ’12th Feb 1948. ‘The Gandhi Memorial itself resembles Hindu Temples of Central India in design (of signficance only given the location in South India). Given the importance of Mahatma Gandhi to Indian history and our Independence, a visit to Kanyakumari includes a stop at this spot for most Indians. This temple or monument the Gandhi Mandapam was erected to honor the world famous Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi.

Train : Kanyakumari (CAPE), Kanyakumari Railway Station and the nearest 2 nd railway station is at Nagercoil (15km) and local station is Iraniel (6km) from the palace.Railways are considered as the most prominent means of transport to get here. Travelers can get any number of trains to reach Kanyakumari including trains to Delhi and Bangalore. The Kanyakumari express, Himsagar express, Kanyakumari Howrah express, Tirrukural express, Bangalore express and Island express and many others are some trains which operate from major cities connecting Kanyakumari.

Air : Nearest Airport is Trivandrum International Airport which is at a distance of 87 km from Kanyakumari. Trivandrum airport is well connected with many major cities in India and abroad. Direct flights from many gulf countries are available from Trivandrum. Tourist taxi charges about Rs 1,500 from Trivandrum to Kanyakumari.

Tibet House in New Delhi opens a gate to Tibetan culture. The activities of this centre reach beyond the circle of Tibetologists and Buddhist Masters, it integrates laypersons as well as scholars of many disciplines, artists and social activists.The Tibet House was founded in 1965 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to preserve and disseminate the unique cultural heritage of Tibet and to provide a centre for Tibetan and Buddhist studies. It has since widened its horizons.
From 1959 onwards, Tibetans have been fleeing from the political upheavals in their homeland, travelling the difficult paths across the Himalayas into India. Many brought with them precious objects and books of religious and cultural significance. This formed the seed of the Museum and the Library. Located in the heart of New Delhi, the five-story facility houses a Museum of valuable Tibetan art and artefacts as well as a Library with nearly 5000 volumes of manuscripts and books, a Resource Centre, a Conference hall, a Gallery and a Bookshop. Tibet House offers incentives and resources for research and translation projects and publishes important texts and research results. It hosts lectures, organizes conferences, exhibitions, filmshows, and festivals. These programmes focus on Indian and Tibetan Buddhist history, religion, philosophy, art, literature and culture, and bear witness to the vital and evolving heritage of the Tibetan people.

In 1992, a one-day symposium was held at Tibet House to explore academic approaches to Tibetan history. Four leading scholars spoke on the theme: Ven. Ribur Rinpoche, Dr. D. Dashpurev, Prof. Lokesh Chandra, and Dr. Dawa Norbu.This private museum, established in 1965 within the premises of Tibet House, depicts the richness of Tibetan culture and art. On view are colourful wooden sculpture, paintings, especially thanfeas, carpets and ritual objects. Some objects have been collected from monasteries in Tibet while others have been created at the various Tibetan settlements scattered across India. There are rare ‘Thangkhas’ or painted scrolls from 15th century Tibetian monasteries, an exquisite collection of Buddha figurines, old currency notes, objects of prayer, musical instruments and antique jewellery. There is a library with books on Tibet, Tibetian history and culture. A shop is also located over here that sells clothes, jewellery, medicines, incense, curios and Tibetian handicrafts. The House also conducts lecture sessions and discussions on a regular basis that are very informative and those wanting to enjoy an intellectual evening can attend these sessions.

Shri Sai Baba Samadhi Mandir is located at the 17,Institutional Area, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. Sai Baba, a man of principle, as he was lovingly called by his Hindu and Muslim followers, devoted his entire life in teaching the common path of Hinduism and Islam. He always believed and professed “Sabka malik ek” (meaning one God governs all). All his life he opposed religious orthodoxy and worked in spreading communal harmony. He spent the last years of his life in Shirdi (Dist Ahemadnagar, Maharashtra) until he attained the ‘Mahasamadhi’ (left his physical body) on 15 October 1918. Even years after his death, When Sai Baba, the great ascetic first arrived from Panthri village in Maharashtra in 1858 to Shirdi, it was only a tiny hamlet of 80 thatched houses with mud walls. devotees throng this religious site round the year to pay their tributes.

Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid, was constructed in the early half of the 12th century by Qutub-ud-Din Aibak. The mosque is situated in Mehrauli.The mosque has been exquisitely built with a rectangular court in the centre, surrounded by covered passages. These passages were erected with engraved columns and other architectural works .

Quwwat-ul-Islam was sponsored by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, founder of the Mamluk dynasty. Born a slave in Turkey, Qutb rose to prominence as a general during Muhammed Ghari’s invasion of India in the 1180s. After Muhammed’s assassination in 1206, Qutb seized the throne and crowned himself Sultan of the Mamluk dynasty, often disparagingly called the “Slave Dynasty” after Qutb’s origins. Although the dynasty lasted for only a few centuries, Muslim rule in India endured up to the British occupation in 1858. Qutb was a fanatical Muslim. When his garrison occupied Delhi under the command of Muhammed Ghari in 1192, he ordered the destruction of twenty-seven Hindu and Jain temples to furnish building materials for the construction of Delhi’s first mosque. Quwwat-ul-Islam, the “Glory of Islam,” was hastily erected by the young Amir, who conscripted an army of local craftsmen, presumably Hindus, to assemble the structure. The Hindu stonemasons re-used columns from the destroyed temples, but adapting them to use in a mosque proved problematic given Islam’s injunction against the use of images in temples. The masons were forced to plaster over the highly sculpted Hindu columns and presumably cover them with geometric designs. However, after centuries of neglect the plaster has fallen away, revealing the original Hindu carvings.The Quwwat-ul-Islam is best known for its tower of victory, celebrating the Muslim conquest of India. It is built of red sandstone, gray quartz, and white marble, but is probably inspired by the iron “Pillar of the Law” that stands on the site. Built in the Mauryan dynasty in the 6th century, it is the only piece of the temple that stands in its original location. Qutb built around it when he constructed the mosque. Although made of iron, it has resisted rust for over 1,500 years, evidence of the Mauryan’s superb knowledge of metallurgy.

Qila Rai Pithora was created by Prithviraj Chauhan, also known as Rai Pithora, the popular hero of the stories of Hindu resistance against Muslim invaders. Prithviraj’s ancestors captured Delhi from the Tomar Rajputs who have been credited with founding Delhi. Anangpal, a Tomer ruler possibly created the first known regular defence- work in Delhi called Lal Kot- which Prithviraj took over and extended for his city Qila Rai Pithora. The ruins of the fort ramparts are still partly visible in the area around Qutab Minar. During the ear of Tomar and Chauhans magnificent temples were built in Delhi. It is believed that twenty seven Hindu temples complex existed at the site of Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque and Qutub Minar. The Iron Pillar standing at Mehrauli in utter defiance of rust and ravages of time tells the glory and prosperity of the Rajput dynasty. The Iron Pillar however was not originally in the Qutub Complex and it would appear that it was transported to its current location, perhaps by the Tomer ruler, Anangpal-II from Udayagiri in Central India. The remains of Rai Pithora can still be seen in the present Saket, Mehrauli, Kishangarh and Vasant Kunj area.

Qutb Minar (in Mehrauli) (from the direction of Saket) a massive wall, which seems as old as time, runs parallel to the road. That wall was a major part of the fortifications of the first city of Delhi (based upon archaeological evidence) built by one of the famous rulers of India Prithviraj Chauhan (Prithviraj III) in the year 1180 A.D.. This was his capital city.. This was Qila Rai Pithora. In the year 736 A.D. King Anangapal Tomar (his name is inscribed on the Iron Pillar of Delhi) founded Lal Kot. The words ‘Lal Kot’ basically mean ‘Red Fort’ but it should not be confused with the Lal Qila (Red Fort) built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the year 1648 A.D. Lal Kot was basically a walled citadel or Military Garrison which also served as the capital of the kingdom of Tomars.King Prithviraj Chauhan (Prithviraj III) captured Lal Kot in the year 1180 A.D. and made extensive renovations to the structure and extended the citadel by building massive ramparts around it. It was made into a thirteen gated fort. That city became to be known as Qila Rai Pithora. The Chauhans and the Mamluks (Slave Dynasty) ruled from Qila Rai Pithora and it remained the capital city of the empire of Northern India for over a hundred years.

Old Fort or Purana Qila is somewhat rectangular in shape having a circuit of nearly two kilometers (1.25 miles). Humayun, the second Mughal Emperor who set his new capital Dinpanah in 1534, built the gigantic gateway and walls of Purana Qila. The ramparts have three gateways with bastions on either sides. Like most Mughal monuments, this one too is surrounded by a now dried, wide moat which once connected to the river Yamuna. You will see a quintessential Islamic pointed arch with Hindu chhatris (umbrella-like structures) and brackets, at the northern gateway ‘Talaqui Darwaza’ (meaning the forbidden gateway). Old Fort is also the venue for a spectacular sound and light show held every evening. The show takes you 5000 years back in time bringing alive the grandeur of the Mughal era. Old Fort or Purana Qila (Hindi: पुराना क़िला, Urdu: پُرانا قلعہ‎, translation: Old Fort), is the oldest fort among all forts in Delhi and, the oldest known structure of any type in Delhi. It was re built by the Afghan king Sher Shah Suri, on the same site, which was perhaps the site of Indraprastha, believed to be the capital of the Pandavas, Sher Shah raised the citadel of Purana-Qal’a with an extensive city-area sprawling around it. It seems that the Purana-Qal’a was still incomplete at Sher Shah’s death in 1545, and was perhaps completed by his son Islam Shah or Humayun, although it is not certain which parts were built by whom. It’s located at the site of the legendary city of Indraprastha, that was founded by Pandavas on the banks of perineal river Yamuna, which is revered by Hindus since ages, points to the possibility of this site’s history dating back to nearly more than 5000 years old. Consequently the fort is considered by some, to be ‘the first city of Delhi’. Researchers now confirm that up till 1913, a village called Indrapat existed with in the fort walls. Excavations carried out by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) at Purana Quila in 1954-55 (trial trenches) and again 1969 to 1973 by its Director, B B Lal have unearthed Painted Grey Ware dating 1000 B.C., and with a continuous cultural sequence from Mauryan to Mughal through Sunga, Kushana, Gupta, Rajput and Sultanate periods, confirming the antiquity of the fort.Sher Shah has been credited with building this fort in the 15th century. The Indraprashta location is closer to Feroze Shah Kotla grounds and the Qila near there.
As you will move from the bustling quarters of Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi towards the serene zoological park, you will find a colossal stone fort standing in mute testimony to your left. Legend has it that, the fort nestles on the ruins of the princely state of Indraprastha, the original city of Delhi. Today, every stone wholeheartedly sings the drama of blood and blade, enacted between two great dynasties of Indian history. Although the construction was started by Humayun, the Afgan ruler, Sher Shah – who briefly punctured the Mughal reign by defeating Humayun – completed it during his raj during 1538-45, before Humayun regained control of India.

Majnu ka Tilla is situated on the right bank of the River Yamuna on the G. T. Road (National Highway-1), opposite Timarpur, Delhi. On Baisakhi Day, the birthday of Khalsa is celebrated here immensely. It is said that a muslim hermit had camped here on a small hill at the edge of the Yamuna during the rule of Sultan Sikander Shah Lodhi. He become very thin by fasting, because he was always lost in meditation. He even forgets about the world around, so people started relating him to Majnu (crazy). Whenever he was not lost in meditation, he ferry people across the Yamuna in his small boat for free.

Majnu ka Tilla is the historic name of area, literally means the hillock of Majnu, after the tilla or mound where during the reign of Sikandar Lodhi on Delhi Sultanate, a local Iranian Sufi mystic, Abdulla nicknamed Majnu (crazy), met Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak on July 20, 1505. Majnu ferried people across the Yamuna river for free as a service to God, his devotion resulted in the Nanak staying here till end July. In later history Sikh military leader Baghel Singh built the Majnu ka Tila Gurudwara to commemorate the stay in 1783, and the sixth Sikh guru, Guru Har Gobind also stayed here. Today it is one of oldest extant Sikh shrines in Delhi and the surrounding estate of donated by early 19th-century Sikh emperor, Ranjit Singh.Majnu Ka Tilla area has three main residential settlements with total 3000-3500 homes, Aruna Nagar, New Aruna Nagar and Old Chandrawal village, which was came up in early 1900s, when British government settled labourers involved in the construction of the Central Secretariat buildings, during the construction of the New Delhi. The next round of settlement came post-independence in 1958-59, when Aruna Nagar was developed by the Land and Development wing of the Urban Development ministry as it disburses 925 plots of 40 sq. yard each, to people resettled here from various part of North Delhi. The Tibetan refugee camp later named New Aruna Nagar developed after 1960, and more recently two large jhuggi jhopari (hutment) clusters have developed on the periphery.Gurdwara Majnu-ka-Tilla is situated on the right bank of river Yamuna, opposite Timarpur Colony beyond Khyber Pass. Every year on Baisakhi Day, the birthday of the Khalsa is celebrated by the Sikhs of Delhi with great enthusiasm. A langar (free kitchen) is arranged on the occasion when thousands of people join irrespective of caste, creed and status.

International Doll’s Museum Was founded in 1965, by the renowned political cartoonist, K. Shankar Pillai (1902–1989) . K. Shankar Pillai , noted cartoonist, set up Children’s Book Trust, a pioneering work in the field of children’s literature in India, in 1957. Later, a gift of a doll from a Hungarian diplomat gave Shankar the idea of collecting dolls from countries he visited. He often held exhibitions for poor children, and at one exhibition in Delhi, among the hundreds of visitors were the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru accompanied by his daughter Indira Gandhi. Indira was inspired and together with Shankar set up an international museum for dolls, eventually materializing one November 30, in 1965.The principal collection consists of gifts from Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and many subsequent Prime Ministers, including Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. Also several embassies and diplomatic missions in Delhi gifted dolls to the museum. Visiting dignitaries like Madame Tito, Queen Frederika of Greece, the Queen of Thailand, the sister of Shah of Iran, the wives of Presidents of Mexico and Indonesia and many others gifted dolls representing their respective nations. Dolls Museum is one the most renowned museums in New Delhi which has a huge collections of dolls from across the globe. The renowned political cartoonist, K. Shankar Pillai (1902–1989) founded this museum in 1965 with thousand dolls. The museum covers an area of 5,184.5 square feet (481.66 m2). The former President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan inaugurated the Dolls Museum and at the inauguration time the number of dolls was only 500. In between 1965 and in 1987, the number of dolls has risen to 5,000, a vast majority coming as gifts. Shankar Pillai was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award by Government of India in 1976. Today the volume has increased to 6,500 exhibits from almost 85 countries, adding to its international character.

Trains operate every 10 minutes from 5am to 1am. Cycle-rickshaws are still in use in parts of Old Delhi, though they have been banned in Chandni Chowk to reduce congestion. Let’s hope they’re not banned in other areas, as they’re the best way to get around Old Delhi – the drivers are wizards at weaving through the crowds. Tips are appreciated for this gruelling work.

Indira Gandhi Memorial museum is located at the former residence of Indira Gandhi is now a fascinating museum, displaying artefacts, photos and newspaper clippings, as well as personal belongings, including the blood-stained sari she was wearing when she was assassinated in 1984. Some of the rooms are preserved as they were, an interesting window into the understated elegance of her life. Another section is devoted to her son Rajiv, also assassinated in 1991 by a suicide bomber. Fragments of the clothes he was wearing and, even more poignantly, his trainers, are on display. On the way out, you’ll pass an enclosed crystal pathway that marks Gandhi’s final footsteps before her murder.

But rarely do museums hold such emotional as well as a national significance as the Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum in New Delhi does. The museum was established at 1, Safdarjung Road in Delhi by converting the bungalow that served as the former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi’s residence, into a memorial after her historical assassination. Indira Gandhi Museum, is located inside the white bungalow which served as residence of Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. The bungalow was turned into a memorial museum after her assassination on October 31st 1984. Attractions: Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum was the residence of the former Prime Minister of India. It was later converted into a museum. One can see the collection of rare photographs of the Nationalist movement, the personal moments of the Nehru-Gandhi family and her childhood. Walking in this museum is like strolling on the paths of history as the walls of the museum display rare photographs and drawings by Indira Gandhi and his son Rajiv Gandhi. The collection gives a visual narration of her life from childhood to her last days.
