Suchindram

India /Tamil Nadu /Kanyakumari /Kanyakumari

Sight Address : Suchindram Temple,7 Km from Nagercoil Station, Kanyakumari, India Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Suchindram is one of the few places where the trinity Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are worshipped together. It is the beautiful white gopuram (tower) of the temple that catches your eye first-up. About 13 kilometers (8.12 miles) northwest of Kanyakumari, Suchindram is an elegant structure with musical pillars and 22 feet, single-stone statue of Lord Hanuman in addition to a diverse collection of art from different periods. A bit more about the structure and its music-creating pillars; it is 134 foot (40 meters) high with a façade covered with sculptures of deities from the Hindu mythology. And, on tapping the pillars produce the music of veena, mridangam and other traditional instruments. Inside you will find the ‘lingam’ representing the three gods.According to folklore, Lord Shiva stayed at this place when Devi Kanyakumari came for penance. Explore the long-pillared halls and you will see depiction of scenes from the great epics Ramayana and Mahabharata on the walls. Appreciate the exquisite workmanship especially the sculptures caved out of a single granite block. There is an 18 feet (5.4 meters) idol of Anjancya other than a massive figure of Nandi, the holy cow. Made of chalk powder, the idol of Nandi is considered to be the biggest in India. Look up the sculptures of 1108 women holding oil lamps on the side of the long hall after the entrance. In a massive boulder halfway down the hall is inscribed the history of the temple in Tamil and Sanskrit. The shrine dedicated to Lord Ram and Sita is at the end of the adjoining hall. The architectural grandeur of the structure comes to life during the two annual festivals in which the temple precincts are beautifully lit and adorned with garlands. One is the Markhazi festival in which the deities are taken out on a procession around the city, and the other being the 10-day-long Chithirai festival celebrated in April-May.Though the time of construction of the temple is not officially known, it is believed to have been built in the 17th-18th centuries.

Suchindram Temple in Kanyakumari

Suchindram Temple in Kanyakumari

HistoryEdit

The place got the name of Suchindrum from the Sthala Purana. Hindu Mythological legend has it that king of devas, Indra got relieved of a curse at the place of the main linga in the temple. The term “”Suchi”” in Suchindrum is believed to have derived from the Sanskrit meaning that stands for “”purify””. Accordingly Lord Indra is supposed to visit the temple for performing “”Ardhajama Pooja””, or Worship, at midnight every day.The Thanumalayan temple is an important Hindu temple located in Suchindram in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India.

St Xavier Church

India /Tamil Nadu /Kanyakumari /Kanyakumari

Sight Address : St Xavier Church near Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu Edit

Detail InformationEdit

St Xavier Churchis about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from Kanyakumari in Kottar, the stark white spires of St. Xavier Church stand sentinel over this little coastal town. It was built around 1600 by St. Francis Xavier during one of his trips to Kanyakumari district from Goa. During his stay in Kottar, Saint Xavier used to worship Mother Mary in a small temple. He even averted the invasion of the Padagas on the people of Venad which was appreciated greatly by the ruling king. And as a token of appreciation, the king allotted him a piece of land in Kottar to get a Catholic church constructed. The site already had a church in 1544 where the St. Xavier Church now stands. According to historical records, in 1865 the church was expanded and the shrine of Our Lady was also refurbished and vaulted over. Finally in 1930 the church was raised to the status of a cathedral. To commemorate the fourth centenary of the arrival of St. Francis Xavier in India, in 1942 an ornate spire to the saint, a grotto to Our Blessed Mother and a small shrine to St. Ignatius who sent him to India, were added to the cathedral precincts. The structure was further enlarged in 1955 and the chapel of Our Lady was also incorporated to it.Legend has it that the church was a place of miracles in the early times. Even today it enjoys great fame as evident from the huge gathering at the time of the 10-day-long annual feast celebrated in November-December.

HistoryEdit

St Xavier Church was later renovated in 1865 and the Church of St. Mary was taken over. In the year 1930, St Xavier Church rose to the status of a Cathedral. In 1942, a tower to honour St Francis Xavier was constructed. A grotto for St. Mary and a minor shrine for St. Ignatius were also constructed within the premises of this cathedral. In 1955, the church was again renovated and the Chapel of St. Mary was added to this church.St.Francis Xavier, a Spanish Jesuit missionary, landed in Goa in May 1542 and he sailed from Goa to Cape Comorin in October 1542 on missionary tour to Travancore Once a great band of dacoits attacked Travancore.Afterwards the Bishops of Cochin constructed a new and more spacious church that was richly endowed with precious ornaments and utensils gifted by the Kings of Portugal The mortal remains of Christian martyr Devasahayam Pillai were given a Christian burial in front of the high altar of St.Xavier`s church at Kottar in January AD 1752.While being one of the oldest churches in the whole of erstwhile Southern Travancore, it is definitely the oldest Cathedral church of Roman Catholic Diocese of Kottar in the present-day`s Kanyakumari district (of Tamil Nadu) since there are three more dioceses got established here later on.

Sanguthurai Beach

India /Tamil Nadu /Kanyakumari /Kanyakumari

Sight Address : Sanguthurai Beach, Kanyakumari, TN Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Sanguthurai Beach, is a very pretty beach about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Kanyakumari. From this beach you can see as far as the Vivekananda Rock Memorial sharing space with the stone sculpture of Tamil poet, Thiruvalluvar. Away from the clamor of main Kanyakumari town, Sanguthurai is a quieter place to spend an evening strolling on the yellow sand and simply gazing at the sea. The beach looks particularly serene at sundown cast in a warm orange glow. Largely untouched until a few years ago, today the beach looks fully urbanized with snack stalls, a children’s park, gazebo-style sitting area with terracotta roofs and better lighting arrangement. The present infrastructure step up could be to make Sanguthurai more touristy, but this has manifestly taken away from its secluded beauty. Despite the ramp up, fortunately, the beach doesn’t receive a surge of visitors which makes it ideal to enjoy time in solitude, collect seashells, examine the crabs that swim ashore, watch the sunset or simply lounge on the sand and contemplate.
