Snow Leopard Breeding Centre

India /West Bengal /Darjeeling /Darjeeling

Sight Address : Snow Leopard Breeding Centre, Jawahar Parbat, Darjeeling, West Bengal.Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Snow Leopard Breeding Centre is a place where Snow Leopards are breed in the natural surroundings. This is an initiative taken by wildlife conservation movement under the governance of Kiran Matkan. The number of Snow Leopard was decreasing tremendously, because in their normal habitats the cubs were either eaten by the other wild animals or they die because of some disease, the snow leopard breeding centre is built which is similar to the normal habitat but the breeding is done under captivity so as to give full protection and increase the number of Leopards. The visitors can see them here; snow Leopard is caged in big cages. The rules of centre are very strict; the visitors are not allowed to make noise. Snow Leopard is one of the rare species and it was close to extinct, one thing more Snow Leopards is not known to breed under captive environment, being a wild and dangerous, dangerous and shy animal but the efforts of Kiran Matkan made this thing possible with the help of wildlife conservation program. The Snow Leopard Breeding Centre is devoted to the snow leopard breeding program. Snow leopards are one of the endangered species. Efforts are on worldwide to make endangered species breed under captivity, and Snow Leopard Breeding Centre is one such effort. Snow leopards are not known to breed under captivity; Kiran Maktan, however, made it possible. These snow leopards are kept in large enclosures, and visitors are allowed to watch them. Complete silence is a must while inside the Centre. Darjeeling plays host to two of the world’s rarest animals, the Himalayan Red Panda and the elusive Snow Leopard. Due to their decreasing numbers efforts are being made world over in breeding of Snow Leopard in captivity, but none of effort has been successful. It is in India only that with great efforts of Sh. Kiran Maktan, who has devoted his life in breeding program of snow leopards, it has been made possible in this Snow Leopard Breeding Centre.

HistoryEdit

The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling is dedicated to conservation of Wildlife. It started work on captive breeding project of this rare species in the year 1983. It was selected as an ideal site for this captive breeding project. Experts Dr. Ingo Rieger and D. Walzthoeny inspected the site in July 1983 and gave their approval. The site selected for off display conservation breeding centrer of Snow leopard is the North – Western corner of the Jawahar Parbat (Birch Hill) at a latitude of 27º and longitude 88ºE. Altitude is 6900 ft. a little above the Lebong Cart Road within the compound wall of the Zoological Park, opposite St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling.
This was the first instance of an Asian Zoo participating in the Snow leopard Master plan which was conceptualized by Mrs. Helen Freeman, President of the International Snow leopard Trust and was also species coordinator of the “Species Survival Plan” for Snow leopards. A pair of unrelated Snow leopard was flown to Darjeeling Zoo from Zurich Zoo via London and New Delhi on 21st March 1986. These beautiful specimens were “Kashi”, the female and “Vishna” the male. The female was born on 26th August 1983 in the Zurich Zoo. The male was born on 23rd June 1978 in Helsinki Zoo.
Another pair (Hank and Persia) came to Darjeeling Zoo from U. S. Zoo on 16th January 1989. The male “Hank” was born at Littlerock on June 6th, 1985 and female “Persia” at San Antonio on April 23rd 1980. The pair gave birth to two female cubs on May 20th, 1989. This was the first successful breeding of Snow Leopards in Darjeeling Zoo. “Quizil” (male, d.o.b. – May 23, 1990, Zurich), “Quila” (female, d.o.b. – May 23 1990, Zurich) and “Quetta” (female, d.o.b. – May 23, 1990, Zurich) were later added to the collection of the Zoological Park on January 28, 1992 to induce new blood and continue planned breeding programme at Darjeeling Zoo.
Another male ” Tyson” – d.o.b. – August 8, 1995 from Hunbstand arrived at Darjeeling on January 27, 2000 for the same purpose. Two wild / rescued females “Neeta and Meeta” from Leh – Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir were also air lifted to Darjeeling by Charted Plane of Ministry of Defence on May 17, 2000, again to continue with the breeding project. “Meeta” unfortunately died within few days of its arrival.
In the last twenty years there are in total 46 births of Snow leopards in captivity in the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling. The Snow leopard Breeding Project at Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling is one of the most successful and only breeding programme of the species in South East Asia.
All the record keeping of programme and animals is not only done in Darjeeling Zoo, but is also recorded with the International Stud Book Keeper of the species at Helsinki. Steady research and studies are also being undertaken so that this very special and sensitive project can become a model for other such Conservation Breeding Project in suitable locales. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in 2003 had 18 Snow leopards (9 males and 9 females), one of the largest captive population, in a single zoo, in the World and a record of the the zoos. As on May, 2006, there were 12 Snow leopards (6 males and 6 females.)
Next step taken was to have at least 4 -5 stable captive populations of Snow leopards at different high altitude zoos in the country, before any release / stocking in the wild can be contemplated. In 2004, a pair each of Snow leopards was sent from Darjeeling Zoo to Gangtok, Nainital and Shimla Zoos to start subsidiary Snow leopard breeding centrers in these Himalayan Zoos. The Project received inspiration from a host of officials, non officials, and Institutions and Staff of the P.N.H. Z. Park, Darjeeling.

Passenger Ropeway

India /West Bengal /Darjeeling /Darjeeling

Sight Address : Darjeeling Rope-way is 3 Km From Darjeeling Railway Station, Darjeeling, India Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Darjeeling Rope way is a rope way in the town of Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. The rope-way used to be a popular tourist destination in the town. It consisted of sixteen cars and plied between the “North Point” in the town of Darjeeling and Singla on the banks of the Ramman river. The journey on the rope-way offered beautiful views of the hills and the valleys around Darjeeling. The rope-way, which was started in 1968 and revamped in 1988, was stopped in October 2003 after four tourists died when the cable snapped causing two cars to plummet down the hill. In 2005, the state forest and public works department (PWD) ministers formed a three-member committee to oversee safety issues. The committee, which included a PWD engineer and two Kalyani Government Engineering College teachers, found the services unfit after a trial run.The rope-way was reopened on 2 February 2012.The rope-way was started in 1968 by the forest development department and comprised only a single car which ran one way. Later, it was upgraded to 16 cars and went to and fro. From an elevation of 2,134 m (7,001 ft) in Darjeeling’s North Point (Singamari), this bicable rope-way descended to 244 m (801 ft) at Singla on the banks of the Ramman river, which with Little Rangeet, meets the Great Rangeet. Stopping at Tukver, Burnesbeg and Singla tea estates, it took 45 minutes to reach Singla Bazar, 8 km away. The rope-way passed over dense forests, mountain ridges, water falls, flowing rivers, green valleys and tea gardens. The Great Rangeet flows from the glacial elevation of Kabru, in the lower regions of the Kanchenjunga, meeting first the Ramman and then the Little Rangeet further down. Singla offers is a fascinating view of the lovely valleys of these two streams. The Little Rangeet flows across the lush green Bijanbari valley. While the Little Rangeet is overflowing with trout, the valley has wildlife, flowers and butterflies. The passenger rope-way was operated as a joint venture of the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation and the Conveyor and Rope-way Services Private Ltd. It had been revamped in 1988.

Observatory Hill

India /West Bengal /Darjeeling /Darjeeling

Sight Address : Makal-Babu-Ko-Thaan, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India.Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Observatory Hill is the oldest site in Darjeeling, locally called as Makal-Babu-Ko-Thaan. The Hill has a fascinating story to it. According to legend, Lord Indra’s scepter (Dorje), emblematic of his thunderbolt, is believed to have fallen at the place (ling) where the Observatory Hill now stands. Darjeeling thus derives its name from the Tibetan words ‘Dorje’ and ‘ling’. If you are in the vicinity of the Chowrasta square, just called The Mall locally, you should visit the Observatory Hill. A Red Hat Buddhist Monastery called Dorje Ling, or ‘place of the Thunderbolt’ once stood at this very spot. A temple of Mahakala now stands here and the hill is thus popular with both Buddhist as well as Hindu worshippers. What’s more, the Hill affords the most spectacular view of snowcapped peaks, including the majestic Mount Kanchenjunga in the far distance. The Mall road originates and culminates at the Chowrashtra. The hill atop the Mall is the Observatory Hill. This hill is attached to strong religious faith and great importance both for the Hindus and the Buddhists. The sacred Mahakal temple rests on this hill; Mahakal is considered to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva. The Bhutia Busty Gomba was originally situated in this hill and later relocated to the current place. Thus the hill serves as a witness to the harmony between the Hindus and the Budhists.

HistoryEdit

Observatory Tower was built, In order to exploit the view of the world’s third highest mountain – the Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling. This Tower stands along with the Mahakal Temple on the Hill which technically is the temple of Lord Shiva but both Hindu and Buddhist Priests share the Temple Alter as this site was once where the Bhutia Basti Red Hat Order Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism stood.

Ghoom Monastery

India /West Bengal /Darjeeling /Darjeeling

Sight Address : Ghoom Monastery is eight kilometers far from Darjeeling, West Bengal. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Ghoom Monastery or Ghum Monastery is the popular name of Yiga Choeling Monastery located at Ghum at an elevation of 8,000 feet, 8 km from Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal, India. The monastery follows the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. There is a 15-feet high statue of “Maitreya Buddha” (Coming Buddha) in the monastery. It contains images of Buddha’s disciples, Chenrezi and ChongapaIt was built in 1875 by Lama Sherab Gyatso and is the largest of the three monasteries in Ghum. Amongst the Buddhist texts available are the Kangyur, the Tibetan Buddhist canon, running into 108 volumes. The monks fly prayer flags in the Tibetan tradition. The Monastery belongs to the Yellow Hat sect also known as the Gelupka. One of the key Arrractions inside the monastery is the 15-foot model of the Lord Buddha which is known as The Maitreya Buddha or the Gyalwa Shampa which means the Buddha of the future or the Coming Buddha. This is one of the biggest and oldest statues of Buddha in Darjeeling area. This statue was created with clay that was all brought from Tibet. In front of the Buddha’s statue there are two huge oil lamps that keep burning all the time and all through the year. There is a charge for taking photograph inside. When I took my last picture, amount for a still picture was Rs. 10/- per photo and Rs. 50/- for a video shot. The cash needs be to be dropped into the donation box. There is a board outside that clearly talks about the charges, and a monk inside reminds you of the same. I wondered why such forced donation when some of the other monasteries in the area simply don’t allow you to take pictures inside and the rest do not even ask for money. I learned that for the last several years the monastery is going through severe financial crisis. Some of the grants that it earlier received for its operational expenses have been pending for decades. One of the only ways that the monastery today runs is by way of donations. And hence the charges.

Ghoom Monastery has more names such as Monastery of Sampten Choling or monastery of Yiga Choeling. This lies in the place called Ghum. It is situated at a height of 8,000 feet. They run a school where small children begin their journey of becoming monks. The school is named ‘gelug school of tibetan buddhism’. This temple houses a fifteen feet sculpture of “Maitreya Buddha” which means (arriving Buddha) in this temple. There are various portraits of the Lord Buddha’s disciples, namely Chenrezi and Chaungapaa. This temple had its foundations laid in 1875. A lama named Sheraab Gyaatso started the construction work. It is the biggest monastery in Ghum. He was a Mongolian astrologer as well as a monk. The book banks of this monastery have multiple Buddhist texts. The Kangyur can be found here which has 108 volumes. There are several occasions when the monks fly flags that have a prayer in them. It is a Tibetan ritual.
As this Monastery lay in the boundaries of Ghum town, people started addressing it as Ghoom Gompa. Ghum is a very majestic place of Darjeeling. The tall statue of Gautam Buddha rests on the entrance of the monastery. Lot of tourists take pictures of it. People can offer prayers and ring the holy bells. They can walk around the complex thanka scrolls. There are ancient drums kept within the temple. Some Buddhist manuscripts dating back to very old times can be found here.

On its inner walls are paintings of Lord Buddha in his several postures painted in vibrant shades of red, yellow, blue, green and white. It has a gorgeous and bright painting in the centre of the ceiling in all five Buddhist colours where the chandelier is hung. The red pillars have intricate and bright coloured floral paintings on them. Just outside the Aloobari Gompa, Buddhist monks of Tibet and Sikkim sell their respective handicrafts and Buddhist spiritual artefacts. Tiger Hill

Tiger Hill

India /West Bengal /Darjeeling /Darjeeling

Sight Address : Tiger Hill is about 12km to the south-east of Darjeeling Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Tiger Hill is a must for tourists visiting the mountains. You have to get up at 3am to make it there in time for sunrise, over the Mount Kangchenjunga range. As the sun appears, the mountain changes colour in what is a pretty amazing sight. It is the third highest mountain in the world. The Tiger Hill is located about 11 km from Darjeeling, at an altitude of 2555 meters above the sea level. The dawn view of Kanchenjunga, the highest mount after Mount Everest and K2, and other eastern peaks of the Himalayas is excellent. On a clear day, Mount Everest, which is around 225 km from Tiger Hills, can also be seen; however, this is a rare sight. One must get up at 4 am to be able to be there to watch the sunrise. As the sun rises, the colour of the mountain changes, which is an amazing sight. Tiger Hill is the summit of Ghoom, the highest railway station on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for the panoramic views it offers of Mount Everest along with Kangchenjunga. It is 11 km from the town of Darjeeling and can be reached either by jeep or by foot through Chowrasta, Alubari (incidentally the oldest tea plantation in Darjeeling) or Jorebangla and then climbing up the incline to the summit, which takes about 2 hours at an easy pace.
Panorama of the Kangchenjunga massif from Darjeeling’s Tiger Hill. The first rays of the sun shoot ahead and shed light upon the twin peaks of Kangchenjunga painting it and then bathing it in a beautiful orange colour. From Tiger Hill, Mount Everest (29,002′) is just visible, peeping out through two other peaks standing by its side. Makalu (27,799′) looks higher than Mt. Everest, owing to the curve in the horizon, as it is several miles closer than Everest. The distance in straight line from Tiger Hill to Everest is 107 miles. On a clear day, Kurseong is visible to the south and in the distance, along with Teesta River, Mahanadi River, Balason River and Mechi River meandering down to the south. Chumal Rhi mountain of Tibet, 84 miles away as the crow flies, looks like a great rounded mass over the snowy Chola Range. One comes face to face with this peak of superb beauty from Phari Jong which is 129 miles away from Darjeeling. While at Tiger Hill, you can also visit Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, which offers great picnic spots, and its two artificial lakes serve as a reservoir for supply of water to Darjeeling town.

Tiger Hill

HistoryEdit

Tiger Hill is at an altitude of 2590 meters, 8482 feet. Tiger hill is popular spot for most spectacular views, four of world’s highest mountains all 8000 meters high towering over us at an incredibly close distance present a sight one can never forget. The contrast between Everest and Kanchenjunga is very much marked. Kanchenjunga is remarkable for it’s imposing bulk and massive proportions while Everest soaring above the series of valleys and ridges, is more graceful and majestic. Snowy ranges occupy the space between the two. The entire ranges of Bhutan , Sikkim and Nepal are visible but the panorama is completely dominated by the Kanchenjunga and its neighbouring peaks. The change in the colour of mountains as the sun rises is never to forget experience. The highest spot in the area at 2590m, Tiger Hill is near Ghoom, about 11km from Darjeeling. The hill is famous for its magnificent dawn views over Kanchenjunga and other eastern Himalayan peaks. On a clear day even Mount Everest is visible. Every day a large convoy of battered Land Rovers leaves Darjeeling at 4.30am, which means that in the smaller lodges you get woken up at this time every day, whether you like it or not. It can be very cold and very crowded at the top but coffee is available. There is a view tower.
