Shankaracharya Temple

India /Jammu & Kashmir /Srinagar /Srinagar

Sight Address : Shankaracharya Temple is situated in the Srinagar district on the hill known as Takht-e-Suleiman. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Shankaracharya temple is situated in the Srinagar district on the hill known as Takht-e-Suleiman. It is housed at a height of 1100 ft. above surface level of the main city on the hill. It is believed that Raja Gopadatya got the temple constructed in 371 BC, giving it the name of Gopadri. The great philosopher Shankaracharya is supposed to have stayed here when he visited Kashmir to revive Sanatan Dharma. This incident, which took place ten centuries ago, led to the renaming of the temple as the Shankracharya temple. The Shankracharya Mandir of Kashmir, India is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is thought to be the oldest shrine in the Kashmir valley. The temple, as it stands today, has undergone many repairs throughout its life. The first repair is supposed to have been done under the rule of Lalitaditya. The second repairs were undertaken by Zain-ul-Abideen after the temple got damaged in an earthquake. These repairs were carried out during the Governorship of Sheikh Mohi-ud-Din. Maharaja Gulab Singh, a Dogra ruler, is credited for the stone steps that form a part of the passage to the shrine. The electrification of the Shankracharya temple was done in 1925. The temple is of great importance, not only from the point of view of religion, but also from architectural viewpoint. A high octagonal platform supports the temple, approached by a flight of approximately hundred steps. The sidewalls of the steps once bore some valuable inscriptions. There is also a Persian inscription inside the temple, dating back to Emperor Shahjahan’s rule. The main surviving shrine, consisting of a circular cell, provides a magnificent view of the valley below. The inner chamber of the Shankaracharya temple, after being repaired, is now covered with a modern ceiling.

Shankaracharya Temple in Srinagar

HistoryEdit

Shankaracharya temple was visited by Adi Shankara and has ever since been associated with him, after whom the hill/temple got the name shankaraharya. It is also regarded as being sacred by Buddhists, who call the mandir “Pas-Pahar. The temple was originally a buddhist temple nearly 2500 years ago and the shiv ling was placed inside the temple by Adi Shankaracharya on his visit to Kashmir and the temple became a Hindu temple. “The hill is also referred to as Takht i Suleiman (Throne of Solomon) and the temple also called “Throne of Solomon. “It is believed that king Solomon came to worship on the hill which makes the place sacred from ancient times. According to Pandit Anand Koul (1924) as repaired by King Gopaditya (426 – 365 BC) and by King Lalitaditya (697–734).Its roof was also repaired by Zain-ul-Abidin after an earthquake; later, its dome was repaired by Sheikh Ghulam Mohiuddin, a Sikh Governor (1841–1846).This hill was called Jetha Larak and afterwards it was named Gopadari Hill. Some are of opinion that the temple at the top was originally built by King Sandiman (2629-2564 B.c.). There were 300 golden and silver images in it. About 1368 B.C. King Gopadittya founder of Gopkar repaired it and bestowed to the Brahmans of Arya Varta, agrahars which he built on its top. King Sandimati (34 B.C.-A.D. 13) improved and added to the temple. Zain-Ul-Abdin (1421-1472 A.D.) repaired its roof which had tumbled down by an earthquake. Sheikh Ghulam Mohi-Din, a Governor (1841-46) also repaired its dome. Recently, the dome was repaired by Swami Shivratnanand saraswati at the request of a Nepali Sadhu who gave him financial aid. The temple is under the control of the Dharmartha Department. They have built two small buildings for the sadhus who live there. There is at the place an old stone shed which is called ‘Parvatihund bana koth’ (the store-house of goddess Parvati). The temple was built by Jalauka, the son of the great Emperor Ashoka, about 200 B.C.King Gopadatta of Kashmir who ruled from 79 to 109AD, rebuilt it and dedicated the temple to Jyesteswara. The hill was called Gopadri and the village at its foot on the south is still called Gopkar.

Shalimar Bagh

India /Jammu & Kashmir /Srinagar /Srinagar

Sight Address : Shalimar Bagh,Located at heart of the Srinagar. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Shalimar Bagh was constructed by the great Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1619 for his beloved wife Nurjahan, the sprawling garden with four terraces, imposing fountains, well laid out manicured gardens, tall trees & fresh mountain air is one of the must visit places while in Srinagar. Located 15 km from the city the easiest way to reach the gardens is by taking a Shikara ride from Dal Lake. The Mughal Gardens layout taken from the Persian gardens has three terraces with fountains & lined with Chinar trees. Each of the 3 terraces carried distinct importance, the first one being the public terrace; called the Diwan-e-Aam. The second terrace called the Diwan-e-Khas was accessible only to nobles or guests of the court. And the third & the highest terrace called as “Abode of Love” was reserved for the king and the royal ladies. Nishat Bagh and Dal Lake are some adjoining attractions to Shalimar Bagh.
shalimar-bagh-srinagar

HistoryEdit

Shalimar Bagh is located on the northeast side of Lake Dal, approximately fifteen kilometers away from the center of Srinagar. It was laid out by Jahangir as Farah Baksh (“the delightful”) in 1619, while he was founding the city of Srinagar. In 1630, under the orders of Shah Jahan, the local Kashmiri governor, Zafar Khan, extended the garden under the name of Faiz Baksh (“the bountiful”). Under late Pathan and Sikh governors, Shalimar was treated as a pleasure resort, and during the reign of Ranjit Singh, European visitors were housed in its marble pavilion before the Maharaja Hari Singh installed electric lights. The site of Shalimar seems to have been ideally suited to a garden; it contained a natural canal, and a small nearby spring-fed stream was diverted to the garden site to provide continuous running water.Covering an area of approximately 12.4 hectares, the garden is rectangular in shape and measures 587 meters long by 251 meters wide. It is oriented northeast to southwest, with the highest point located along the northeast side. Although it is not located directly on the lake shore, it is connected to Lake Dal by a long canal, and the formal approach to the garden is through this canal. It can now also be reached from the road that runs around Lake Dal. Shalimar Bagh is an adaptation of the formal Persian chahar bagh, traditionally uniform in shape, with a water source in its center and four radiating streams that divide the garden into four sections. Like other Mughal gardens around Lake Dal, Shalimar adapts the chahar bagh to the mountainous topography by emphasizing the central water channel; the secondary channels are minimized or removed from the design, and the source of water shifts from the center of the garden to its highest point. Thus the central water canal of the garden (shah nahar) forms its main axis, uniting the three terraces with their regularly placed fountains and chinar (sycamore) tree-lined vistas. Beginning at the top of the garden, the canal runs through each of the baradaris (pavilions) in the garden. At each terrace, the canal flows into a larger pool, highlighting its baradari.

Nishat Bagh

India /Jammu & Kashmir /Srinagar /Srinagar

Sight Address : Nishat Bagh is a terraced Mughal Garden situated on the eastern side of the Dal Lake in Srinagar. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Nishat Bagh is a terraced Mughal Garden situated on the eastern side of the Dal Lake in Srinagar. It is the second largest Mughal Garden in Kashmir; the largest one is Shalimar Bagh. Though it is smaller in size than Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh is movingly more beautiful and stunning. This garden is also known as ‘The Garden of Bliss’ and has the Zabarwan Mountains forming its backdrop. The garden was designed and built in 1633 by Asif Khan, Brother of Noor Jahan. Nishat Bagh has 12 terraces representing the zodiac signs and offers splendid views of the Dal Lake and far distant snow capped mountain ranges of Pir Panjal. A mountain spring has been made to slide down from 15 feet high into a rectangular pool right in the middle of the garden. There are pools in every segment of the gardens with gushing fountains. The long water channels interspersed with fountains and tanks, rows of Chinar Trees along with vivid colored flower beds enhanced the beauty of the garden to a great extent.

Nishat Bagh in Srinagar

Nishat Bagh in Srinagar

HistoryEdit

Nishat Bagh, also known as the garden of joy, is a terraced Mughal garden sprawled along the eastern side of the Dal Lake, with the towering Zabarwan hills as its backdrop, in the city of Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. The second largest Mughal garden in the Kashmir Valley, it is eclipsed only by the Shalimar Bagh, which also lies on the banks of the Dal Lake. The aptly named ‘garden of joy’ is truly a sight to behold, designed by Asaf Khan, on the orders of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, as a token of love for his wife Nur Jahan, the sister of Asaf Khan; also to serve as a place of leisure and reminiscence. Widely considered to be a master class of Mughal horticulture, the garden teems with rarely seen species of flowering plants, complete with lengthy alleyways lined with Chinar and cypress trees. Fondly named as the Garden Farah Baksh or the ‘Bestower of Pleasure’ by Emperor Jahangir, the garden also came to be known as Faiz Baksh, afterwards. Nishat Bagh has surprisingly remained intact since its construction in 1619. A garden that has stayed true to its Persian heritage, with its panorama on lines of the Islamic garden layout, the place is spread over 32 acres of flat land, its rectangular shape sculpted into 3 terraces containing pools of flowing water. Wondrous to watch is the flow of water from the higher terrace pool to the lower one, sashaying down as a resplendent waterfall. Every pool has multiple water-fountains lined-up in the centre, outlined by rows of Chinar trees and walk-ways running in tandem with the pool. The source of water is the central water-canal ‘Shah Nahar’, fed as it is by a mile long canal drawing water from the Dal Lake. Located on the bank of the Dal Lake, with the Zabarwan Mountains as its backdrop, Nishat Bagh is a garden of bliss that commands a magnificent view of the lake beneath the snow capped Pir Panjal mountain range that stands far away to the west of the valley. The Bagh was designed and built in 1633 by Asif Khan, elder brother of Nur Jehan.

HistoryEdit

Mughal Gardens:-While the recent history and development of the Mughal types of gardens is credited to Emperor Jahangir, the ancient history of the garden can be traced to the 2nd century when it was built during the reign of Pravarsena II. Praversena II founded the city of Srinagar and ruled in Kashmir from 79 AD to 139 AD. He had built a cottage for his stay at the northeastern corner of the Dal Lake and had named it Shalimar (the meaning of the name remains unknown, Russian scholar Anna Suvorova in her book “”Lahore: Topophilia of Space and Place”” has asserted that it is certainly an Arabic or Persian name since a Muslim King would never use a Sanskrit name for a royal garden). The king, on his visits to a local saint by the name Sukarma Swami at Harwan, used to stop at this cottage. Over the years, the cottage fell into ruins and later could not be located. However, the name of the village remained as Shalimar. It is here that Emperor Jahangir built his celebrated Shalimar Bagh, his dream project to please his queen. He enlarged the ancient garden in 1619 into a royal garden and called it ‘Farah Baksh’ (‘the delightful’). He built it for his wife Nur Jahan (‘light of the world’). In 1630, under Emperor Shah Jahan’s orders, Zafar Khan the governor of Kashmir got it extended. He named it ‘Faiz Baksh’ (‘the bountiful’). It then became a pleasure place for the Pathan and Sikh governors who followed Zafar Khan. Built in the era of the Mughal rulers of India, the Mughal Gardens is one of the splendid places in this city. Moving around in the garden, you will experience the magic of the Mughal style of architecture & design which is based on Koranic concepts of paradise such as the Charbaug. Due its magnificent charm, the garden lures the attention of a number of travelers from different corners of the world and makes a visit to Srinagar. One will find that the garden is a combination of three prominent gardens namely the Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Gardens and Chashm-e-shahi.

HistoryEdit

Houseboats are located in the heart of Kashmir Valley. Srinagar sits comely on the Dal Lake and Jehlum River. The Kashmiri houseboats are associated closely with the valley’s culture and traditions. Dating back to the British rule, houseboats became home to these people after they were denied land grants in the state. A brilliant idea that started from constructing small boats was later revolutionized with transforming these boats into spacious modern styled floating hotels. Houseboats are all made of the finest cedar wood that follows with intricate walnut wood carvings, paneled walls and tiled baths. Our boats are categorized in the super deluxe category and each boat has an assorted number of three to four bedrooms with a private bath and wash room. The houseboats also have a fine dining area and a lounge cum sitting room. The houseboats come complete with a large front seated balcony, a sun deck and a small kitchenette. We generally have a 24 hour power back up and clean water supply. Each of our houseboats has a cook and a care taker who work for you during your entire stay. All of our houseboats have an attached boat that is placed under your command. These small paddle boats can take you out into the open lake or take you across on your way for any sightseeing. We definitely know that once you visit and experience us, you would always feel yourself back in your second home.

Dal Lake

India /Jammu & Kashmir /Srinagar /Srinagar

Sight Address : Dal Lake located at south side of Srinagar. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Dal Lake is famous not only for its beauty, but for its vibrance, because it sustains within its periphery, a life that is unique anywhere in the world. The houseboat and shikara communities have lived for centuries on the Dal, and so complete is their infrastructure on the lake, that they never have to step on land! Doctors, tailors, and bakers – you’ll see them all in tiny wooden shops on the lake, near picturesque vegetable gardens and acres of lotus gardens.

HistoryEdit

Dal lake is mentioned as Mahasarit (Sanskrti-महासरित्) in ancient Sanskrit texts. Ancient history records mention that a village named Isabar to the east of Dal Lake was the residence of goddess Durga. This place was known as Sureshwari on the bank of the lake, which was sourced by a spring called the Satadhara. During the Mughal period, the Mughal rulers of India designated Kashmir, Srinagar in particular, as their summer resort. They developed the precincts of the Dal lake in Srinagar with sprawling Mughal-type gardens and pavilions as pleasure resorts to enjoy the salubrious cool climate. After the death of Aurangzeb in 1707, which led to the disintegration of the Mughal Empire, Pashtun tribes in the area around the lake and city increased, and the Durrani Empire ruled the city for several decades. In 1814 a significant part of the Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, was annexed by Raja Ranjit Singh to his kingdom, and the Sikhs grew in influence in the region for 27 years. Nishat Bagh Mughal Gardens:-During the British Raj, the British also made Srinagar their capital during the summer months, attracted by the cool climate of the Kashmir valley, amidst the back drop of the majestic snow covered Himalayan ranges. The lake precincts experience temperatures in the range of 1–11 °C (34–52 °F) during winter and 12–30 °C (54–86 °F) during the summer season. The lake freezes when temperatures drop to about −11 °C (12 °F) during severe winter.Although the Dogra Maharaja of Kashmir restricted the building of houses in the valley, the British circumvented this rule by commissioning lavish houseboats to be built on the Dal Lake. The houseboats have been referred to as, “each one a little piece of England afloat on Dal Lake.”After the independence of India, the Kashmiri Hanji people have built, owned and maintained these houseboats, cultivating floating gardens and producing commodities for the market, making them the centre of their livelihoods. The houseboats, closely associated with Dal Lake also provide accommodation in Srinagar. Following the Mughal and British rule, the place has became a haven for tourists and earned the epithet, “Jewel in the tourist crown”.
