Burzahom

India /Jammu & Kashmir /Srinagar /Srinagar

Sight Address : Burzahom is situated to the north-west of Shalimar Gardens. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Burzahom is a major historical site of Kashmir carrying great archaeological importance and is located on the north-west side of the famous Shalimar Gardens. It was discovered that the area was occupied by a Neolithic settlement between 3000 and 1500 BC. The ancient houses found here were semi-subterranean pit houses, partially excavated into the ground. After 2000 BC, houses here were made of mud-bricks and above ground level. The word Burzahom in the local language stands for ‘place of birch’. The place was named so because burnt birch trees were discovered here in huge numbers during the excavation of this site. This proved that birch trees grew here in abundance during the Neolithic Age.

This proved that birch trees grew here in abundance during the Neolithic Age. The excavation works on this site went on for almost six years, from 1961 to 1968, and ten human skeletons were found. Scientific experiments confirmed that the human skeletons belonged to different eras including Neolithic-Megalithic, Neolithic, and few other historic periods. Some of the major archaeological artefacts collected from this site included pots, arrowheads, animal skeletons, and tools.

wular-lake-srinagar

History Edit

Wular Lake is one of six Indian wetlands designated as a Ramsar site. However it faces environmental threats including the conversion of large parts of the lake’s catchment areas into agriculture land, pollution from fertilizers and animal wastes, hunting of waterfowl and migratory birds and weed infestation in the lake itself. In ancient times, Wular Lake was also called Mahapadamsar (Sanskrit: महापद्मसरः). Nilamata Purana also mentions it as ‘Mahapadmasaras’. Mahapadamsar is referred as Bolor by Al-Biruni {960-1031 AD}. The lake, with its big dimensions and the extent of water, gives rise to high leaping waves in the afternoons, called Ullola in Sanskrit; meaning stormy leaping, high rising waves.

The Khanqah Shah Hamadan Mosque, also called the shrine of Shah-e-Hamdan. Situated on the banks of the river Jhelum, between the third and fourth bridge, it is the first mosque ever built in Srinagar. The original one was built in 1395. Shah Hamadan’s full name was Mir Sayed Ali Hamadni, the surname being derived from the city of Hamadan in Persia. Shah-i-Hamdan, who came from Persia in the 13th century, was responsible for the spread of Islam in Kashmir. Khanqah-i-Mualla, on the banks of the Jhelum, was the very spot where Shah-i-Hamdan used to offer prayers. After staying in Kashmir for many years, he left for Central Asia via Ladakh. A mosque established by him at Shey (near Leh) attracts devotees from far and wide. The Khanqah is a wooden structure whose chief aesthetic feature is its beautifully carved eaves and hanging bells. The interiors are richly carved and painted, and the antique chandeliers give it an air of opulence.

HistoryEdit

The Khanqah Shah Hamadan Mosque:-The Khanqah mosque, known as the Shah Hamdan Masjid, sits on the right bank of the river Jhelum between the third and fourth bridges. It was built in 1395 by Shah Sikandar to commemorate the visit of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamdani, better known as Shah Hamdan. Fire claimed the mosque several times in the following centuries and the current structure, as seen today (except for the more recent cloisters), was sponsored by Abul Barkat Khan in 1732. It now stands 38 meters tall. Khanqah of Shah Hamdan, popularly known as Shah-i-Hamdan Mosque, is also called as Khanqah-e-Molla. This shrine has been built along the Jhelum River by Sultan Sikander in 1400. He constructed this shrine in honour of Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, who popularised Islam in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

HistoryEdit

Hazratbal Mosque, is an important place of worship for Muslims. The history of the shrine goes back to the early seventeenth century when the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan’s Subedar, Sadiq Khan, laid out a garden here & constructed a palatial building, Ishrat Mahal or Pleasure House in 1623. However, the Emperor, during his visit in 1634, ordered the building to be converted into a prayer House with some additions & alterations. During the time of Aurangzeb, when Moi-e-Muqqadus (The Holy Relic) arrived in Kashmir in 1699, it was first kept in the shrine of Naqashbad Sahib in the heart of the city. Since the place was found to be insufficient in view of the unprecedented rush of people who thronged the place to have a glimpse of the Moi-e-Muqqades, it was decided to shift the it to Hazratbal, then known as Sadiqabad. The construction of the present marble structure was started by the Muslim Auqaf Trust headed by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in 1968 and completed in 1979. The “Moi-e-Muqqadas” (Holy Relic of Prophet Mohammad S.A.W) is displayed on Various occasions related with the life of Prophet & his four holy companions.

Sight Address : Chashme Shahi Garden is situated a mere 8 kms from Srinagar towards Harvan.Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Chashme Shahi Garden or ‘The Royal Spring’ is one of the three Mughal Gardens in Kashmir. Chashme Shahi Garden in Srinagar

HistoryEdit

Chashme Shahi originally derives its name from the spring which was discovered by the great female saint of Kashmir, Rupa Bhawani, who was from the Sahib clan of Kashmiri Pandits. The family name of Rupa Bhawani was ‘Sahib’ and the spring was originally called ‘Chashme Sahibi’. Over the years the name got corrupted and today the place is known as Chashme Shahi (the Royal Spring). The garden was constructed around the spring by the Mughal Governor Ali Mardan Khan in 1632.It was commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his eldest son, Dara Sikoh. In the east of Chashma Shahi the Pari Mahal (Fairy Palace) lies where Dara Sikoh used to learn astrology and where he was later killed by his brother Aurengzeb. The garden is 108 m long and 38 m wide and is spread over one acre of land.
