Sindhu Sadan building of this sacred site was built by Shree Purushotam Vikram Mavajee in 1906. He was known as the jewel of Okha Mandal and constructed this building for his residential purpose. Sindhu Sadan features a nearby Sunset Point, from where tourists can get a beautiful view of sunset. Rukmini Hrid temple, is an architectural masterpiece. Rukmini is the most important of Krishna’s 16,108 wives. The temple walls are decorated with beautiful paintings depicting her pastimes with Krishna. This temple is said to date back to the 12th century. The story behind this temple is that one day, Durvasa Muni, who is easily angered, was invited by Lord Krishna and his wife, Rukmini, to dinner. When a person is invited to dinner, etiquette dictates that the host should not eat until the guest has been satisfied. On the way to dinner, Rukmini became thirsty and asked Krishna for help. Krishna then put his foot in the ground and the Ganges waters flowed forth from the earth while Durvasa was not looking. As Rukmini was drinking the water, however, Durvasa turned and saw her drinking without his permission. He became angry and cursed her to live apart from Lord Krishna. That is why Krishna’s temple is in the town and hers is located outside the town.

Rukmini Hrid Dwarka

Rukmini Hrid is the collection of seven ponds and is a major tourist attraction at Dwarka. This place is also known as “Bhrigu Teertha” as sage Bhrigu had long association with this place. Bathing at this place would destroy all sins and bestow salvation to the devotees. There is also a Rukmini Temple near the Rukmini Hrid which was built in 12th century. The story behind this temple goes that one day Lord Krishna and Rukmini had invited Durvasa Muni for dinner. As per the Indian etiquettes, it is believed that host should refrain from eating until the guest has been satisfied. However, while Durvasa Muni was eating, Rukmini felt thirsty and requested Lord Krishna to give her some water. Lord Krishna put his left foot down and water of River Ganga emerged from the grounds. While Rukmini was stealthily quenching her thirst, Durvasa Muni saw her and he cursed Rukmini that she would stay apart from her husband, Lord Krishna. If one carefully notices then the temple of Lord Krishna is built inside the city of Dwarka while that of Rukmini is lying outside.

Gopi Talav got its name as after the Gopi princesses, who fell in love with Lord Krishna and wanted to marry him. The stories of Lord Krishna’s childhood abound with youthful pranks and romance have a connection with this lake. As a young boy he used to dance the raas with the Gopis (young female inhabitants) in Vrindavana (or Vruj). When he moved to Dwarka, the Gopis could not bear the separation and came to visit him. They united with their Krishna at the Gopi talav, 20 km north of Dwarka on the night of Sharad Purnima (full moon) and once again danced the raas with him. Legend says that, unable to part from Krishna, the Gopis offered their lives to the soil of this land and merged with their beloved. It is said that they turned into yellow clay, known as Gopi Chandan. Even today the soil of the Gopi talav is extremely smooth and yellow in colour.

Dwarka Lighthouse was constructed at Rupen Creek during the early 19th century. In order to lift a lamp, a flag mast was posted at the port, which thereafter served as a lighthouse. In 1866, eighteen metres tall square tower was constructed at this site, along with an installation of an oil wick lamp.The present day tower measures around 43 metres in height and was constructed between 1960 and 1962. On 15th July 1962, this lighthouse was inaugurated by the then transport minister Mr. Raj Bahadur. In addition to the tower, a RCC Baffle wall was constructed at the site for installing the sound horn equipment and vibrators that can work as fog signals. In 1988, this fog signal service was terminated.

Dwarka Lighthouse was constructed at Rupen Creek during the early 19th century. A port was developed in the early 19th century at nearby Rupen creek. A flag mast was provided at the port to hoist a lamp which served the purpose of lighthouse. In the year 1866 a square masonry tower 18m high was constructed at the present site. An oil wick lamp inside a 6th order optic was installed on the tower. On 29th November 1877 then Governor of Bombay Sir Richard Temple came to Dwarka by sea route. He visited Dwarka lighthouse also and observed the light to be grossly inadequate. Subsequently a PV equipment with 4th order revolving optic supplied by M/s. Chance Bros., England replaced wick lamp in 1881.Minor modifications were also carried out in 1900. It was reconstructed between 1960 and 1962. On 15th July 1962, this lighthouse was inaugurated by the then transport minister Mr. Raj Bahadur.

Somnath Temple (Gujarati: સોમનાથ મંદિર Sanskrit: सोमनाथ मन्दिर) located in the Prabhas Kshetra near Veraval in Saurashtra, on the western coast of Gujarat, India, is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of the God Shiva. Somnath means “The Protector of (the) Moon God”. The Somnath Temple is known as “the Shrine Eternal”, having been destroyed many times by various kings and rulers. Most recently it was rebuilt in November 1947, when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel visited the area for the integration of Junagadh and mooted a plan for restoration. After Patel’s death, the rebuilding continued under K. M. Munshi, another minister of the Government of India.

Somnath in Gujarat, is one of the twelve Jyothirlinga, other are Mallikarjuna at Srisailam in Andra Pradesh, Mahakaleswar at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Kedarnath in Himalayas, Bhimashankar in Maharastra, Viswanath at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Triambakeshwar in Maharastra, Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga, Deogarh in Deoghar, Jharkhand, Nageswar at Dwarka in Gujarat, Rameshwar at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and Grishneshwar at Aurangabad in Maharastra. As per Shiv Mahapuran, once Brahma (the Hindu God of creation) and Vishnu (the Hindu God of protection) had an argument in terms of supremacy of creation. To test them, Shiva pierced the three worlds as a huge endless pillar of light, the Jyotirlinga. Vishnu and Brahma split their ways to downwards and upwards respectively to find the end of the light in either directions. Brahma lied that he found out the end, while Vishnu conceded his defeat. Shiva appeared as a second pillar of light and cursed Brahma that he would have no place in ceremonies while Vishnu would be worshipped till the end of eternity. The Jyotirlinga is the supreme partless reality, out of which Shiva partly appears. The Jyothirlinga shrines, thus are places where Shiva appeared as a fiery column of light. Originally there were believed to be 64 Jyothirlingas while 12 of them are considered to be very auspicious and holy. Each of the twelve Jyothirlinga sites take the name of the presiding deity – each considered different manifestation of Shiva. At all these sites, the primary image is Lingam representing the beginning-less and endless Stambha pillar, symbolizing the infinite nature of Shiva.

Rukshamanee Mandir is dedicated to the beloved wife of Lord Krishna, Devi Rukmani. Among all His 16,108 wives, Devi Rukmani was Lord Krishna’s favourite. The Rukshamanee Mandir, which is also known as Rukmani Temple, features varied paintings of the 12th century on its walls. These paintings capture the time spent by Lord Krishna and Devi Rukmani. The temple is situated about 1.5 km from the main town, on the Okha highway. It is located on the banks of Bhagirathi River, which can be seen while travelling to Beyt Dwarka. The Mandir comprises a beautiful marble deity of Devi Rukmani, with four hands or Chaturbhuja. These four hands hold Shanka, Chakra, Gada and Padma, which symbolise her being reincarnation of Goddess Maha Lakshmi. Rukshamanee Mandir is an important shrine and it is dedicated to the most beloved consort of Krishna, Devi Rukmini. A masterpiece in artistic terms, this temple makes the beholder spell bound.
