Damri Mahal was built after the completion of the “Barra Darri” at present is the Revenue Office building. The building was constructed by insisting on a donation of a damri, which is equivalent to a quarter of a dub. All the labourers employed there were required to provide a contribution. The front of the building has an arcaded verandah that resembles the front of a portico, and consists of five scalloped arches. To the rear of the verandah there are ten rooms of varying sizes and arranged in a linear fashion.The Damri Mahal which is close by was built after the completion of the Barra Darri. It is so named because it was constructed by levying a contribution of a ‘damri’ or the quarter of a dub, on an labourers employed on Barr Darri. An arcaded verandah projects in front like a portico, and contains five scalloped arches. Behind are ten rooms of varying sizes, arranged in a line. To the right are seven atom chambers with antechambers. The entrance is in the right corner. Close by, on a slightly higher level than the rest is another small but detached building. The roof is arched. There are also two cisterns, one in front of the verandah and another outside the building.

Sunheri Mahal is an ancient historic monument, now transformed into a museum. Its collection includes age-old Indian pottery, ruins of regional palaces, antiques, coins, paintings and old dresses of regular use found in the excavation of Bhokardan, a close by historic site. The museum also displays some major reliefs and sculptures found in the local excavations. This museum is placed in the campus of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. The Sunheri Mahal is a great historical attraction in Aurangabad. It was built by a tribal chief who came with Emperor Aurangzeb to South India. Sunheri Mahal is situated in the Paharsingpura area, which is a suburban part of Aurangabad. It is made of good quality stone and lime. One unique feature of the palace is that it has a high pedestal which is now sadly in ruins. Sunheri Mahal is named after the paintings in the Palace that were once painted in gold. The monument was constructed by a Bandalkand chief who accompanied Aurangzeb into the Dakhan.

The Sunheri Mahal is a great historical attraction in Aurangabad. The monument was constructed by a Bandalkand tribal chief who came with Emperor Aurangzeb into the Dakhan, South India. The Mahal is located in Paharsingpura, a suburb of Aurangabad. The structure is made of stone and lime. The Mahal once had a high pedestal, but is presently dilapidated. The paintings in the Mahal were once painted of gold and so the name Sunheri Mahal.

Naukonda Palace was built by Malik Ambar, This monument is now in a very dilapidated condition except for the human and the central part of the diqan behana. The wood work and stucco plaster has all gone. There were evidently five zenanas in the interior with a diwani A’m a Diwanikhas’ a masjid and a kacheri each provided with a garden and a cistern. When Nizam Ali Khan was at Aurangabad, he occupied the Naukonda Palace. The whole building is in ruins now. The palace consists of 5 zananas. It also consists a Dewan-i-Am, a Dewan-i-Khas, a masjid and a Kachari. Each section of the palace is provided with a garden and a water tank. The central part of the palace is in a good state. Also a hamam meaning hot bath which is attached to the palace is also in a fine shape. The wood work and the ornament plaster are missing. The kachari consists a gadi of the Nizams. The walls of the central part of the Devankhana, and a hamam or hot bath attached to the building, are in a fair state of preservation. However, the wood-work and the stucco plaster are all gone. The Divan i Aam is a large quadrangular structure much in ruins. The Kacheri close by contains a gadi of the Nizam. In the throne room are placed the original paraphernalia.The Diwan e Aam was demolished when the present Medical collage of Aurangabad was constructed. The palace now houses The Aurangabad College for women. In the olden days Nawab Salar Jang’s palace and Govind Baksh’s mahal were between the Paitan and Jafar gates.

The Naukonda Palace was built by Malik Ambar in 1616 upon the summit of a rising ground at Aurangabad, India. There were evidently five zenanas in the interior with a diwani A’m a Diwanikhas’ a masjid and a kacheri each provided with a garden and a cistern. When Nizam Ali Khan was at Aurangabad, he occupied the Naukonda Palace. . The massive portal gateway leading to this, over which the Naubatkhana sounded, was called Barkal. According to one account a noble of Aurangzeb’s court named Alam Khan, made additions to this Palace; and further additions were subsequently made by Asaf Jah I. An adjoining block of buildings was screened off by a partition wall for Nasir Jang. The Naukonda Palace was also occupied by Nizam Ali Khan, when he was at Aurangabad. The palace had nine apartments, the interior buildings consisted of five zananas, a Divan i Aam, a Divan i Khas, a masjid and a kacheri, each provided with a garden and a cistern. Killa Arak

Killa Arak, a palace ordered to be built In 1692, by Aurangzeb. The palace has not survived in its original form leaving only ruins, and these can be found from Delhi to Mecca gate. The Killa Arak had four entrances and a Nakarkhana for musicians. The Dabar hall and the Jumma Masjid are the only parts of the palace to remain and are still of some interest. For the use for sport, a piece of ground, which is close to the Masjid, was walled. The pavilion while plain and simple is still elegant and can be entered by a gallery from behind. Killa Arak is a major attraction in Aurangabad. The Killa Arak has 4 entrances. The throne-room of Aurangzeb is in a garden while the gate to the ground holds an inscription that goes right back to 1659 AD.The Killa Arak has 4 entrances and a Nakarkhana for musicians. The Dabar hall and the Jumma Masjid are the only remains which are of some interest.

Khuldabad is located at a distance of around 27 km north-northwest Aurangabad and 3 km from the world famous Ellora Caves. It is at present a tehsil headquarters,located at an altitude of 2732 feet above MSL. The visitors can either opt staying at Ellora or at the State Guest House at Khultabad. Regular bus services from Aurangabad connect Khultabad. A huge tank lies to the west of the city wall which could have been a major water source for the city. Khuldabad is abode to two of the most worshipped Muhammaden saints – Burhan-ud-din and Zain-ud-din. It is a religious centre of prime significance located in Aurangabad. Their tombs still lie here. Langda, Pangra and Nagarkhana are the three gates of Khuldabad. To the west of the city, there rests a large tank that is believed to have been a major source of water to the city in those days.

Khultabad is an important religious centre due to its abode to two of the most revered Muhammaden saints namely, Burhan-ud-din and Zain-ud-din and also location of tombs of these Muhammaden saints and others. Its historical significance is attested by the ruins of the city wall constructed by Aurangazeb (1658-1707 A.D.). It has seven gates namely, Nagarkhana, Pangra, Langda, Mangalpeth, Kunbi Ali, Hamdadi and a wicket gate called Azam Shahi. The ruins of many ancient buildings could be even seen today. Himroo Factory is home to the conventional Himroo fabric. A major tourist attraction in Aurangabad, it is located near Zaffar Gate in old town. The Himroo material is famous for its quality and is a mix of cotton and silk. The designs and the patterns on these fabrics are the inspired from the Ajanta paintings. Paithani saris and conventional handloom Shawls are amongst the many other things available here. The Himroo material is typically a mix of silk and raw cotton and is renowned for its great quality. Apart from Himroo fabric, the famous Pathani saris and handloom shawls are also available here. The inspiration for designs on these fabrics and clothes comes from the paintings of Ajantha caves and most of the designs are similar to these paintings. The Himroo Factory is very conveniently located in the old town and is very easy to reach. It is a great place to visit for the shoppers as well as general tourists.

Ghrishneshwar Temple is a very revered temple, situated in the state of Maharashtra. It lies very near to the Buddhist caves of Ellora, only half a kilometer away, and serves as the abode of one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple, with exquisitely sculpted walls, was built under the patronage of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, one of the rulers of the erstwhile state of Indore. Grishneshwar Temple. The religiously important Grishneshwar village is located in the close vicinities of Ellora and Daulatabad near Aurangabad in Maharashtra. Grishneshwar is also known as Kusumeswar, Ghushmeswara, or Grushmeswara and all the names are related legendary stories of the origin of Grishneshwar. It is said that there was once a very religious woman, known as Kusuma, who used to worship Lord Shiva on a daily basis. She used to immerse His Shivalingam in a tank, as a part of her everyday prayer. Her husband had a second wife, who got jealous of the devotion of Kusuma and her resultant respect in the society. In a fit of rage and resentment, she murdered Kusuma’s son. Kusuma became extremely depressed when she came to know that her son had been killed. However, she continued worshipping the Lord. Grishneshwar is one of the ancient pilgrim destinations with all the purities and calmness of an Indian village. Grishneshwar is the abode of one of the holy 12 Jyotirlingas, the holiest and ancient Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple. Daulatabad is situated around 13 kms away from Aurangabad. This place is known for its majestic fortress which was build in 12th century on top of a hill. The Daulatabad fort emerges dramatically over 600 ft above the Deccan plain. It is one of the world’s best preserved forts of medieval times and also one of the few impregnable forts in Maharashtra with excellent architecture. The city was named Daulatabad ‘The city of fortune’, by Mohammed bin Tughluq, the sultan of Delhi. Daulatabad is included on the MTDC tour of Ellora from Aurangabad. The hourly shuttle buses between Aurangabad can also reach the place and the Ellora caves. Hotels are available in Aurangabad.

HistoryEdit

Daulatabad, then called ‘Devigiri’, almost 800 years ago, was a thriving city. It was founded by Bhillamraja of the Yadava dynasty in 1187 AD. Later, the fort of Daulatabad passed through the hands of several dynasties in the Deccan. Less than 150 years after the Yadava dynasty, Daulatabad also became the capital of India for a short period during the reign of Sultan Muhammad-bin-Tughluq, who gave the city its present name. But very soon the charm of this ancient city faded. This fort, which was once known as Devagiri, is a magnificent 12th century fortress standing atop a hill. Daulatabad, which is constructed with excellent architecture, is one of the few invincible forts in Maharashtra. Mohammed Bin Tughluq, the sultan of Delhi gave the name Daulatabad ‘The city of fortune’. Series of trick defense and secret escapes routes are the famous features of this fort. Jami Masjid, Bharatmata Mandir, the Chand Minar, Elephant Tank and ‘Chini Mahal’ or Chinese Palace are the important monuments inside the fort. Daulatabad Fort, which initially had stronghold of Yadav, passed through the hands of several dynasties in Deccan.
