Patiala state history starts off with the ancestor of the Sikh Patiala Royal House, Mohan Singh being harassed by neighbouring Bhullars and Dhaliwals (tappedars of the terrirtory). They would not allow Mohan to settle there. He was a follower of Guru Hargobind and the Guru appealed on behalf of Mohan, but to no avail. The result was an armed struggle and the Bhullars and Dhaliwals were defeated by the Guru’s men, which allowed Mohan to establish the Village of Meharaj in 1627. Patiala district is one of the famous princely cities of erstwhile Punjab. It presents a beautiful banquet of the life style even to a casual visitor to the city. It is the ‘City of palaces and museums’ is a brilliant spectrum of Rajpoot, Mughal and Punjabi cultures.

By Air : Patiala is not having any domestic airport .The nearest Airport is Chandigarh, about 60 km from Patiala. This airport is well connected to all Indian cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore. There is frequent taxi service from Chandigarh to Patiala at almost 15 min intervals.

By Train : The town has its own Railway Station named as Patiala Railway Station. It is well connected to major cities like Ambala, Amritsar, Barmer, Bathinda, Delhi, Haridwar.

By BUS : Patiala lies just off the excellent National Highway no.1 (Delhi-Amritsar) and is about 250 Km from Delhi. There are many direct buses from New Delhi to Patiala at almost 20 min intervals.The PRTC Bus Stand Patiala enquiry no is 0175-2311718.
