The Gunnison Tunnel may be a five.8 mile (9.3 km) irrigation tunnel created between 1905 and 1909 by the Bureau of Reclamation. At the time of its completion, it had been the longest irrigation tunnel within the World. The tunnel diverts water from the Gunnison stream within the Black canon of the Gunnison to the arid Uncompahgre vale around Montrose, Colorado.The tunnel opened in 1909 to a lot of fanfare and dedication ceremony attended by President William Howard Taft.In 1972, the tunnel was selected a National engineering Landmark by the yank Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
