Gangasagar Lake is a wonder, it is an artificial lake constructed adjacent to the Raigad fort. The popular belief is that this pond was built in the time of Sivaji’s coronation and water from the holy river Ganges had been brought to this lake for Sivaji’s crowning ceremony. The villages and the resort on the top is getting drinking water all round the year from this magnificent lake. The all-embracing Palace and Queen’s Chamber are located adjacent this lake. The remains of the watchtowers of the fort can be seen from this Lake.

It’s a belief that this lake was built before King Shivaji’s Rajyabhishek (crowning ceremony) and water had been brought to this lake from the holy river “Ganga”. And that’s why it is known as “Ganga Sagar Lake”. The lake is situated in the front of “Bale Killa”. Balekilla means the central part of the fort and because of that it is the most protected area of the fort.

BUS : State transport offer bus regular and frequent services from Mumbai and Pune to Raigad. Raigad is well connected to all neighboring cities by the public transport buses, including Kolhapur (250 km), Pune (102 km), Mumbai (187 km) and Mahabaleshwar (75 km). Public bus charge is less than Rs 4 per km.

Train : Vir Dasgaon railway station is the nearest railhead to Raigad. This station is connected to Mumbai and Pune with regular trains. Taxi services are available from Vir Dasgaon to Raigad.

Karnala fort also called Funnel Hill is a hill fort in Raigad district about 10 km from Panvel city. Currently it is a protected place lying within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. It was a fort of strategic importance as it overlooked the Bor pass which connected the Konkan coast to the interior of Maharashtra (Vidharba) and was the main trade route between these areas. Karnala fort actually consists of two forts one at a higher level and other lower. At the centre of the higher level is a 125 feet high basalt pillar. It is also called Pandu’s tower. This structure was used as watchtower when the fort was occupied however now it is in a ruined condition. The presence of bee hives also makes it difficult to climb and have resulted in at least one casualty in recent times. There is a water cistern which provides fresh water all year long. From the top the forts of Prabalgad and Rajmachi are clearly visible. The fort has two inscriptions one in Marathi and the other in Persian. The Marathi inscription which has no date is seen on the lower gate on the inner side. Its words are indecipherable. The Persian writing is on upper gate reads “Syed Nuruddin Muhammad Khan, Hijri, 1147 AH (1735 CE) and probably dates from the Mughal occupation of the fort. Currently the entire Karnala Fort lies in a dilapidated and ruined condition. It is under the ownership of the Government of India. The site is open to visitors and attracts several tourists from across the across the country.

Karnala Fort was initially occupied by the Seuna Yadavas of Devagiri and Tughlaq dynasty. The region of Karnala served as the capital of the north Konkan districts of these respective empires. Later it was taken over by the Gujarat Sultanate. Eventually the fortress was occupied by the Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar in 1540. However, the structure was again conquered by the Gujarat sultans with the support of the Portuguese army under the command of Dom Francisco de Menenzes. It was then controlled by the Gujarat Sultanate but with Portuguese garrisons. The Nizam Shah became angered after losing the fortress and thus attacked it with 5,000 soldiers. The Gujarat Sultans gave the control of the fort to the Portuguese and escaped to Vasai. The army of Nizam Shah was defeated by the Portuguese forces and the Karnala Fort remained under the control of the Portuguese. But later Karnala Fort and Sangli Fort were handed over to the Nizam Shah for an annual payment. Karnala Fort, Monument of MaharashtraIn the year 1670, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj of the Maratha Empire captured the fortress by defeating the Portuguese army. However, after the death of Shivaji in 1680, it was occupied by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Later in 1740, the structure was conquered by the Peshwas of Pune. In the year 1818, Karnala Fort was attacked and seized by the army of the British East India Company under the command of Colonel Prother.

Ambarnath temple is one of the oldest temple and tourist attraction in Thane. The mandap and the sanctum of this temple exhibit unique architectural features. The floor of the sanctum sanctorum of Ambarnath temple is an uneven circle as it is designed in the form of a spread-out Shiva’s mat (tiger skin). The mandap, which is placed diagonally across the central axis of the sanctum, is away from it by three entrances that face north, south and west. The mandap has a concave ceiling which is richly decorated with intricate carvings. The main entrance to the temple, which also has an idol of Nandi under the porch, is in the West. The exterior walls of the temple are decorated with intricate carvings of stories related to Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh and Lord Nandi.

Although Andheri is the nearest railway station from the airport a better option would be to take an auto-rikshaw to Kurla or Ghatkopar station (both these stations fall on the central suburban line) and then board any suburban Northbound Local Suburban train (all local suburban trains halt at Thane) to Thane. You’ve the option to board a fast or a slow train. But better option is to board Thane Local Train which ends at Thane station. Trains can be located by Abbrevations for example T – Thane so any train with T abbrevation on Digital Train time display will end at Thane. The auto-rikshaw ride to Kurla or Ghatkopar stations would cost a little more, about Rs 60 to Rs 70, compared with Andheri which will be about Rs.40 to Rs.50 but you would end up saving about 1 hour to 1&1/2 hour. An added benefit is that you get to board a direct train to Thane thus avoiding the change over at Dadar. Thane is also well served by long distance trains, many of which stop at Thane station en route Mumbai.

Thus fixing 140-150 before sitting saves you a lot of headache. Recently the government as made it compulsory for the auto-rickshaws to install an electronic meter which shows the amount and the distance traveled. According to flow of Vaitarna River – Upper Vaitarna Dam, Lower Vaitarna Dam and Middle Vaitarna Dam are the three parts of Vaitarna Dam. Upper Vaitarna Dam is a scenic dam site, located about 20 km from Khodala, in Thane District. The Vaitarna Dam is considered as the main source of water in Mumbai. Train : The best way to get to Thane from Mumbai using public transport is to take the local train service. Although Andheri is the nearest railway station from the airport a better option would be to take an auto-rikshaw to Kurla or Ghatkopar station (both these stations fall on the central suburban line) and then board any suburban Northbound Local Suburban train (all local suburban trains halt at Thane) to Thane. You’ve the option to board a fast or a slow train. But better option is to board Thane Local Train which ends at Thane station. Trains can be located by Abbrevations for example T – Thane so any train with T abbrevation on Digital Train time display will end at Thane. The auto-rikshaw ride to Kurla or Ghatkopar stations would cost a little more, about Rs 60 to Rs 70, compared with Andheri which will be about Rs.40 to Rs.50 but you would end up saving about 1 hour to 1&1/2 hour. An added benefit is that you get to board a direct train to Thane thus avoiding the change over at Dadar. Thane is also well served by long distance trains, many of which stop at Thane station en route Mumbai.

Air : The nearest airport is the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport , Mumbai. Once you get off, you will need to take a taxi or hire a car. The distance to Thane is about 36 kilometers (22 miles), the drive can take between 45 to 75 minutes depending on the traffic.

Others : Auto-Rickshaw : The most common way to get around in Thane is to hire an auto rickshaw. Payment is by meter. The amount to pay, however, is not the amount shown by the meter, but scaled up by a factor which changes whenever there is a rate adjustment. Check the tariff card for the right fare. Ensure Tariff card is stamped & signed by RTO. It is better still to know the approximate km to destination and negotiate the charge lumpsum before hand since the meters are invariably tampered with. e.g Thane to Sion is 15-18 km and fair charge would be Rs. 130-140 (latest rate) but the meter will show Rs.180-190. Thus fixing 140-150 before sitting saves you a lot of headache. Recently the government as made it compulsory for the auto-rickshaws to install an electronic meter which shows the amount and the distance traveled. However, it will take few months for all the auto-rickshaws to upgrade their meters
