Sight Address : Near Masjid Baba Dawood Khaki, Anantnag Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Kherbawani Asthapan Devibal temple is located close to the masjid of Hazrat Dawood Khaki in the Mohala Khaki Shaibaban area of Anantnag. This temple is devoted to the Kherbawani spring, which originates from here. This spring is now preserved in a single-storey stone temple. To the Kashmiri Pandits, this temple has equal significance like the Tula Mula’s Kherbawani temple in the district of Srinagar. Kashmir’s Maharaja Pratap Singh had stopped at this temple, many a time, in his way to and from Jammu, offering a lot of milk to the Goddess. He had also offered some arable lands to the deity. Tourists can visit this place not only for blessings, but also see the changing colour of the water that flows through this spring.

Amarnath Temple

Amarnath Temple

HistoryEdit

Legend says that Amarnath Temple is the place where Lord Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his wife, Goddess Parvati. He chose this spot after making sure there were no living beings around. He created a fire that destroyed any and all living things within the temple. Except an egg was left unharmed. A pair of pigeons born out of this egg became immortal after listening to the secret. Even today, a pigeon pair is always seen roosting near the cave.

Amarnath Cave, perched at an altitude of 3,888 m, is a holy cave dedicated to lord Shiva. Considered as an integral part of ancient Hindu mythology, this cave is believed to be 5,000 years old. The dimensions of this cave are 60 ft in length, 15 ft in height and 30 ft in width. As per the legends, this cave has an important religious significance as it was here that Lord Shiva revealed the secrets of immortality to his wife, Goddess Parvati. Inside the cave, devotees can see an ice stalagmite resembling the Shiva Linga. This linga waxes from the month of May to August, which buffs and fades with the Moon’s cycle. During the months of May to August, the cave is all ready to celebrate the summer festival. Along with the lingam of Lord Shiva, devotees can also see the ice lingams of Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. Flocked by tourists from all across the world, this cave is under close surveillance of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Indian Paramilitary Forces. In order to have a holy voyage to the Amarnath temple, tourists need to get prior permission from the authorities.
