The Vancouver Police repository (formerly Vancouver Police Centennial Museum) opened to commemorate the centennial of the Vancouver department of local government and therefore the town of Vancouver, Canadian province in 1986. Settled at 240 E. Cordova Street in Vancouver’s Gastown, the repository is housed in a very building that was once each the Coroner’s Court and autopsy facilities (until 1980) and therefore the town Analyst’s laboratory (until 1996). In 1935, the Coroner’s Court was used as a makeshift hospital by police throughout the Battle of Ballantyne Pier. It absolutely was designed by creator Arthur J. The repository is go by the Vancouver Police Historical Society, a non-profit organization established in 1983 with the mandate to foster interest within the history of the Vancouver department of local government and to open a repository for this purpose. The catalyst for the project was the museum’s 1st keeper, Joe Swan, a former law officer and amateur scholarly person. Swan wrote the department’s official history book, that was printed by the Vancouver Historical Society in 1986, entitled, A Century of Service: The Vancouver Police, 1886-1986.
The repository is self-funded through admission and program fees, membership fees, donations, novelty shop sales, and project grants; the repository receives no direct funding from the Vancouver department of local government or town of Vancouver however will receive in-kind support.
