Detail InformationEdit
The Neo-Renaissance Zbiroh Chateau can be found above the town of the same name on the border of the Křivoklát and Brdy forests. Before it underwent reconstruction, an early Gothic castle was built here, founded by Zbyňek Zajíc of Valdek. Legend says that the future lord of the castle slept here when he got lost with his companions. When they woke up in the morning, they saw lots of antlers lying all around them. The nobleman collected all the antlers and was thus inspired to name his settlement. Zbiroh can be translated as a place where antlers are collected (‘sbírat rohy’ – collect antlers in Czech).
Later on, the picturesque castle was owned by three emperors: Charles IV, Sigismund of Luxembourg and Rudolph II, who no doubt all enjoyed it here. The castle well is interesting, hollowed into the rock and at 163 metres deep, the deepest well in Europe. From more recent history, it was here that Alfons Mucha painted his World-famous Slav Epic.
Nowadays, the castle has undergone renovation and is open to the public. It is also a location for holding various events from weddings, business evenings in the castle tavern to team-building events in the local rope centre. The peaceful surrounding countryside also lends itself to relaxation and hiking.
