Taxi : Taxis, cars and jeeps are also available at Srinagar for the journey to cover Leh to Ladakh by road . Groups can charter deluxe and A-class buses for Leh, Kargil or Padum (Zanskar) from the J and K SRTC at Srinagar. This place is well connected by road. Jeep hire to Kargil from Padum costs Rs.8000 (while Kargil to Padum is Rs.10,000 – taxiunion rules don’t allow return trips) per vehicle, whether done in one gruelling 14-hour drive or with an overnight stop en route. Other one-way/return rates from Padum: Karsha Rs.600/750; Zangla Rs.2000/3000, Rangdum Rs.4000/6000
BUS : There is a regular bus service run by J&K SRTC from Leh and Kargil for Padum with stops at various point in Suru and Zanskar Valley. Leh-Kargil-Padum buses run approximately thrice weekly, supposedly departing Kargil bus station around 1am but timetables are infamously idiosyncratic. Consider gathering a group and hiring a jeep to
Padum (Rs10,000, 14 hours): start before dawn or consider overnighting at Rangdum. Doublecheck that your driver has Zanskar-endorsed permits from the drivers’ cooperative. For your way to Leh Ladakh the J&K State Road Transport Corporation (J&KSRTC) operates regular Deluxe and Ordinary bus services between Srinagar and Leh on this route with an overnight halt at Kargil.

Air : Ladakh Airport is the nearest air base to the destination which is connected to important cities of the state. However, Jammu Airport is the major air base in Jammu & Kashmir which is well connected to major cities of the country like New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai to name a few. The Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, connect Ladakh internationally as well.During the tourist season (May to October) regular flight service are available from Ladakh to Jammu, Srinagar, Leh and Delhi. Jet Airways and Alliance Air provide weekly service to Ladakh. Weather conditions can be erratic in Leh-ladakh and flights get cancelled at short notice. Check before travelling and book well in advance, since flights are usually full in the summer months.
Others : Truck : Trucks often stop for hitchhikers, who are usually expected to pay half the bus fare, bargaining may be necessary. They are slower than the buses and sometimes stop for long periods to unload cargo.
Things to CarryEdit
- Carry woolan cloths, camera, sleeping bag is necessary, at least a plastic sheet shelter or a tent is recommended for emergencies, and dry food for snacks and lunches. Etc.
Safety / WarningEdit
- If your are trekking into the areas around Tso Moriri, or the Nubra Valley you will need an interline permit available for a 100 to 200 INR from any travel agent in Leh, although you are unlikely to have it checked unless you are driving out or in to the area. To climb Stok Kangri you need a permit from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) which you can get for 2000 INR, the office is near the beginning of Chanspa Road in Leh. Technically you need approval for other peaks as well but Stok Kangri is the only one you are likely to get checked. Other than that Ladakh remains blissfully free of the infamous Indian red tape.
