Later, in 1964 a similar problem arose when Indian witnessed a war with Pakistan. At both these times, work was hampered, which delayed construction of the dam. Finally, in 1968 the administration undertook construction of the dam and it was completed.Yeldari Dam started its operations in 1968 and covers a surface area of 101,540 square km. The major purpose behind construction of the dam was irrigation and hydroelectricity generation, and it was constructed under the supervision of Yeshwantrao Chavan. The dam was initially constructed as a small hydel power station, but was later modernized and expanded as a very huge reservoir. This also resulted in making it as a major tourist spot.
