A geographical centre as well, Windhoek generally is the first point of entry into the country for tourists. A social, economic and cultural center of Namibia, Windhoek is also the starting point of several tours and safaris. Situated at an elevation of 5,600 feet above mean sea level, Windhoek, with a population over 300,000 is the capital and the largest city in Namibia. Served by the Hosea Kutako International Airport located at a distance of 40 kilometers from downtown, Windhoek is also home to the Eros Municipal Airport serving domestic flights.
Founded in 1840 on the northern sloping plain of the Khomas Islands, Windhoek is now well spread over a sprawling 250 square kilometer area. Surrounded by rocky, mountainous regions which make development and expansion an expensive affair, the vast breakwater areas to the north is the last choice. Home to the Polytechnic and the University of Namibia, other tourist attractions in Windhoek are the Parliament of Namibia, the National Gallery of Namibia, the Old Lutheran Church and the Christuskirche.
